Military Occupational Specialty (MOS): Infantry.  During my career I served in all three Marine Divisions.  Most of my assignments were in operations and training.

Because I am bilingual, between 1985 and 1995, I had assignments in 4 Latin American countries.

I served as a Brigade Advisor with the 3rd Brigade of the Salvadorean Army 1985 to 1986 in San Miguel, El Salvador.

I was a student at the Chilean Naval War College in Valparaiso, Chile 1990 to 1991.

Served as the Marine Liaison Officer to the Navy staff in Panama 1991 to 1993.

Served as the U.S. Marine Corps representative to the Colombian Marine Corps in Bogota, Colombia 1993 to 1995.  

Did not serve in Vietnam.

Graduated from the University of Houston in May 1968; was inducted into the U. S. Army on June 14, 1968. Reported to Oakland Army Terminal in California the last week of October 1968; arrived in RVN on November 1, 1968.  Served with Special Staff Company, United States Army Republic of Vietnam (USARV) out of Long Bien, RVN until January 1970 when ETSed and DEROSed upon return to CONUS.

Gary Burns – class of ‘66

First station: Ft. Walters TX. Germany from Feb 68 until Aug 69. Never served in Vietnam because my brother, Leslie Oliver Burns, was in country. When orders came to go to Vietnam, I wasn’t sent there because no two brothers can serve in the same combat zone. Therefore, I went to Germany.
George Mangum – class of ‘66

U.S. Air Force. Dec 1967 – Dec 1970.

Torrejon AF Base, 20 kms north of Madrid. Worked in the hospital as an administrative clerk.
Henry Mitchell – class of ‘64

U.S. Navy. Apr 1965 – Jan 1969. 

I was on a ship for 3 years and deployed 3 times to the South Pacific for duty; helping the fleet fight the war in Vietnam.  My ship, the USS Markab AR23, was a repair ship.  We would repair everything on other ships coming from the war. We’d tie up in the Philippines for weeks and do repairs on the fleet.

Mario R. Gonzales – class of ‘66

U.S. Army. Mar 1968 – Jan 1970.

Vietnam: Mar 69 – Jan 70. 1st Cavalry (Air Mobile), 15 Battalion AES (Air Equipment & Support). 

Stationed in An Khe, Bein Hoa, Phouc Vinh, Tay Ninh and Quan Loi. Flew daily CA (Combat & Assault) and Recon missions. I was the door gunner on the HH-1 (Heuy Helicopter).


Martin Gonzales – class of ‘67

U.S. Army. 1967 – 1970. Vietnam 68-69.

U.S. Army. 1985 – 2008. El Salvadore, Bosnia and Iraq.  Took a 15 yr. break after the first enlistment and retired with 30 yrs. total. God Bless the USA!
Mike Eggers – class of ‘66

Vietnam 1968. Tet Offensive. I Company, 3rd Battalion, 27th Marines.

Vietnam 1969-1970. 9th Infantry. Buck Sgt. 13 months in jungle.
Nat Corona, class of ‘67

U.S. Army. Feb 1970 - Nov 1971.

Served as U. S. Army Airborne Pathfinder with 14th combat aviation battalion (CAB) headquarters company, Americal Division out of Chu Lai, just south of Da Nang, Viet Nam. Largest combat aviation battalion and largest infantry division in U.S. history up to that time. Participated in one of the top five battles in the history of Viet Nam which was Khe Sanh in Feb. 1971 near the country of Laos and (DMZ) demilitarized zone which divides north and south Viet Nam.  Had ex special forces and ex rangers in our unit which made for very interesting times.
Patrick E. Jensen – class of ‘65

Served two tours in Vietnam. Oct 1967 to Nov 1968, and Jan 1969 to Aug 1969. Based in what was called I core area, a few clicks from Chu-LAI Vietnam. In Vietnam for the TET offensive and several major campaigns. Rank at end of enlistment: Sergeant

Never went to Vietnam. I was a teletype operator at Parris Island and everyday I received the number of casualties and names. It was tough to see all the names and the loss all of us were suffering. For the Vietnam vets there was no welcome home parade or sign, but as veterans of that era, we know what the nights were like after they returned (husband was in Nam 1967- 1968). God bless all who have given at anytime and anywhere.
Ruben Hernandez – class of ‘67

U.S. Navy. Sep 1968 – Aug 1972.

Served aboard the USS Austin LPD-4 during most of my tour of duty. I did not have the honor of service in Vietnam as my ship was out of Norfolk, VA and cruised the Atlantic, Caribbean and the Mediterranean.
Ruben Reyna – class of ‘66

U.S. Air Force. Sep 1966 – Jun 1970.

Vietnam Jan 68 – Jan 69. 377 Security Patrol Squadron. Tan Son Nhut Air Base, just outside Saigon. Was in heavy combat during the Tet Offensive in January 1968, in defense of our base, which was over run. Honorably discharged in 1970 after having served four years in the USAF.
Tom McCord – class of ‘66

U.S. Air Force.  Jun 1966 – Feb 2005.

Vietnam/Southeast Asia: 1967-1968, 1969-1970, 1974-1975. Johnson’s Build Up through to the Fall of Saigon. Ultimately, made the Air Force a career. Served in five distinct/diverse career fields while completing my education through MS degree; sixteen reassignment moves and multiple temporary relocations. Go Air Force!!!

Tom Taylor – class of ‘64

U.S.M.C. Jun 1964 – Jun 1969.

Vietnam: India Company 3rd Marines 3rd Marine Division. Da Nang May 1965. First Marine Units to land in Vietnam. Operation Monkey Mountain. Operation Star Light. Machine Gunner. “America’s Battalion”.

First Marines, Camp Pendleton; 3rd Marines, Japan and Vietnam; 2nd Marines, Camp Lejeune, Counter Guerrilla Warfare Instructor; Arlington War College, Quantico;  State Department Rabat, Morocco, Regional Security Office for North Africa and Southern Europe, Embassy Marine.


Tony Tamburrano – class of ‘64

U.S. Army. Tony passed away on April 3, 2007. He left behind a wife, two children and a number of grandchildren. Linda Hansen submitted this info. She’s doesn’t know if Tony went to Vietnam and is not sure what years Tony was in the Army, but thinks he went in right after graduation.
