The Top Ten Teams Who Never Won A 5th Boro Softball Champions

Best Softball Teams in 5th Boro History

To not win the championship

Let’s be honest, everyone thinks their 5th boro team is the best ever. And I’m sure if player X didn’t drop that pop up, or if player Y didn’t ground into that double play then you would be wearing your exclusive championship hoodie as you read this article. I get it, I’ve been on great teams myself, and in the end, all we had to show for it was great memories. But hey, that’s what this leagues all about. Here’s my list of top 10 teams that made it oh so close to being called champions. (Note: This list reflects on my time in 5th boro, which started with the 2011 season)

10) The FAM, 2012 Thursday division.

Two words to describe this team: Defense and Pitching. This team scored 59 runs in their first 9 games, but gave up only 28. In addition to TJ Slyman’s no hitter, this team squared off with the Masterbatters twice in the regular season losing two close games.  A regular season record of 7-3 gave them the #3 seed in the weekday playoffs. They’d make it all the way to the weekday championship, before eventually losing 2 games to 1to their Thursday division rivals Masterbatters.

9) Walls of Jericho, 2013 Fall Ball

Walls of Jericho came into fall ball as a return team to 5th boro. They proved in the past that they had potential to be a dangerous team come playoff time, but it showed all throughout the fall ball season. Sporting a 9-1 regular season record, highlighted by handing the Goodfellas their only regular season loss, WOJ earned the number one seed in the early division playoffs. They would advance to the final four, only to be beaten in the rematch with the same Goodfellas.

8) Delta Con, 2012 Sunday Division

If you played 5th boro in 2012, you probably remember that the Sunday division was the equivalent of the SEC of college football. Between the Goonies, Rugged, Knuckleheads, and Chirpers, there was enough talent to win any division in the league. But the rookie team took the cake. Joining the league for the first time in 2012, Delta Con survived the gauntlet, knocking off all teams that stood in their way. After a memorable 9 inning playoff win over a then 12-1 Class Acts team, Delta Con, advanced all the way to the final four. They would fall to eventual 5th Boro champion Goodfellas in a best 2 of 3 series. This team embodied how a family plays ball together.

7) Kekembas, 2013 Wednesday Division

I have to admit, going into opening day 2013 as a member of Los Gatos Negros, I was confident that we would not only win every game but mercy a good number on our way to a second championship. And then came opening day. The Kekembas team came to play; defeating the former champs game 1. I remember someone saying that it was a huge upset, but the Kekembas didn’t think that way, and soon after no one else did either. Led by the Mcnichol brothers, this team would cruise to an 11-1 record before their highly anticipated rematch with LGN in the Wednesday division title game. LGN got their revenge, ending the Kekembas season, but the Kekembas gained the respect of the league as a new team to watch.

6) The Swingers, 2011 Wednesday Division

In my first season in the league, I remember there was this one team that we just couldn’t beat. And neither could most of the league. Wednesday Division champion Swingers were led by hefty lefty captain Virgil and star players Dave Berenbaum and Vin D’Amato. Their timely hitting and great defense make them one of the most memorable teams to play in 5th yet. They also had the nicest jerseys in the league, which some speculate intimidated other teams pre-game. The Swingers would finish the regular season with an 8-2 record, eventually losing late in the playoffs via upset. Although the season ended in disappointing style, Virgil and the Swingers always made the best of it like the family they are.

5) Chirpers, 2013 Sunday Division

Coming off a first round exit in the 2012 summer playoffs, and a fall ball worth not mentioning, the Chirpers came into a crowded 2013 Sunday division with something to prove. The Palumbo brothers added a few pieces to their team to go with their talented line up, and of course, had their radio blasting at every game with the same cd from 2002. Taking out the Goonies on opening day, they would go undefeated in the rain shortened regular season schedule, proving their dominance by beating teams such as Delta Con and Paramount Fencing. However the streak came to a halt when the Chirpers were upset by old foe Goonies in the Sunday Division championship game.

4) Knuckleheads 2011 Sunday Division

This team was mean. Best word to describe it. They literally bashed everyone they played against, and this was the season after they had won the league championship. Behind the bats of Durak, Hood, Kopeloff, Santaniello, Gramps, Pierson, Gervasi, and I’m probably forgetting a few key players, the Bullshead Knuckleheads picked up right where they left off and started the season 12-0, mercying almost every game in that span. In almost ironic fashion, the Knuckleheads would lose in a best 2 of 3 series to the up and coming Los Gatos Negros, who were in the same position that the Knuckleheads were in a year earlier on their way to the ship. Having played in that series I will attest to one thing, the Knuckleheads had some internal problems at the worst time causing them to lose their grasp on the league. Nevertheless, they still have the best line up to ever play 5th Boro.

3) Los Gatos Negros 2013 Wednesday Division

After winning it all in 2011, LGN was hurt by injuries in 2012, and was denied their chance to repeat as champions by eventual weekday champion Masterbatters. But captain Anthony Cimaglia went back to the drawing board and brought in 2 infield studs and the oldest pitcher in the league, and it worked perfectly. After losing opening day, LGN went over 3 months before losing again. 3 months. That equates to 12 consecutive victories. Based on talent, this was by far the best team to ever play 5th Boro. With 3 league MVPs on the field, a gold glove at every position, and the veteran experience of going all the way this was the team to beat. Playing Burning Chronic in the weekday championship, LGN finally met their match by the name of Anthony Gross. The vet lefty pitched 9 innings of excellence holding LGN to their lowest run total in 3 months and leaving them with another summer’s wait before championship number 2.

2) Masterbatters, 2012 Thursday Division

I’d never seen a team that won so many games so effortlessly as the Masterbatters did in 2012. When you look at this team, the one stat that pops off the page is their runs allowed. 11 in 10 games. I’ll make the bet now that no one will ever come close to that again, and when I say close I mean within 10 runs. With Mike Ostrow on the mound, Prettyboy and Jen up the middle, and Rich Collyer, CW, and Pat catching everything hit in the outfield this team went undefeated in the regular season. They advanced all the way to the championship series as heavy favorites against a veteran Goodfellas squad. After taking game 1, MB would blow a one run lead late in the decisive game 3 to lose the championship.

1) Goodfellas, 2011 Saturday Division

The Goodfellas in 2011 were very similar to 2008 Patriots of the NFL. They had great leadership all around the team. Their lineup was breaking records and they even had league MVP Lou Hollywood leading off for them. They started the season 14-0, the best start by any team in 5th history, and another stat that may never be broken. They dominated a very game Saturday division at the berry homes, only to return to their home field for the championship series. And unfortunately like the Pats, they were up against a Cinderella team that no one ever expected to be there. After losing their first game of the summer to LGN, the Goodfellas won via mercy in game 2. But superstar Pete Dinolfo blasted 2 home runs and Julianne Venturino was the unexpected hero that ended the Goodfellas excellent season, innings away from a championship victory. The pain wouldn’t last long, as they would go on to win the championship the next summer.

The Commissioner Chris Ostrow’s View & Response to Carmines Article: Carmine has only played since 2011 but from my experience in the league a few teams that my boy left off the list and by no stretch is this in any order who could have won a championship are dcs ( year 1 + 2 ) rugged ( year 3 or 4 esp ) the goonies, the guzzlers, the class acts, the rocks-- team scored 144 runs one season but the goodfellas always stood in the way. in the fall ball league i would say the alchoholigans ask mike morro about that the hurricane ruined those dreams heck even sportingwood all-stars had an undefeated record at that point... the tribe was a great team and had a shot to win it all.. The worst part of these LOST SUMMERS are how close they are to winning a championship and knowing that the summer is OVER… Great article thanks carmine!
When 5TH Boro Was Ruled By A Dynasty

A behind the scenes Interview with Mike Orlando:
Many people associate 5th boro sports with softball or basketball being that’s the sport that they play but the second league I ever started was the football... When we ran that league one team ruled with an iron fist… and that was Dynasty..

(CO) 5th Boro at one point had 12 football teams at one point and out of all the teams that played in the league it was no secret that dynasty was the team to beat for years of the leagues existence...
now that the dynasty team has been elected to the hall of fame what does that mean to you as the captain of the team?

  •

Mike Orlando1. It's a good thing to see your team go into the hall of fame I reamber first season when we started wearing yellow shirts to being undefeated for 3 yrs nd winning championships nd everyone hated us

(CO) What was your favorite moment in 5th boro football and
who was your biggest rival?

  • (MO) my favorite moment in 5th boro football was when we were loosing the championship game to cigs team nd everyone was there watching sayin it wasn't our time to win again nd we came back nd won the championship nd everyone kept quite. .i don't think I had a rival in football I think everyone just hated when they saw they had to play us we were everyone ealse rival lol

(CO) That was a great game it was fun to be a part of… many teams wanted the opportunity to stop the streak when your team finally lost what was the feeling amongst the team?

(MO) The feeling amongst the team was funny everyone said it had to happen one day nd I think like 37 or 40 game win streak was good enough lol

(CO) What are your thoughts on Joe Binder as a ref? ( just kidding )
Would you like to see the league comeback?

(MO) I would love for the league to comeback I loved waking up knowing I had a football game nd I can have fun on the field with my boys
(CO) I think I know the answer to this already but how did you choose your number?
I myself can't stand playing on the same team as my brother and we always end up fighting... Do you dislike or enjoy playing on the same team as Vinny.
You continue to play 5th boro sports to this day as a member of the Orlando Magic basketball team how do you feel the season has gone so far...
Where do you expect to finish this season?
As someone who has played 5th boro sports since its inception where do you see the league going? & what would you tell THEM?
(MO) To be honest I dnt kno how I got my number 24 just a kid playing I always played with that number i love playing with my brother whats better way to celebrate a touchdown catch nd ur brother running up to u nd saying good shit never a problem for me

season is good I think we could of won some of those games that we lost but what you gunna do. i expect to finish this season as champions .i see the league getting better nd better I rember when basketball started there was 8 teams now there like 50 sum thing nd I always tell people join the basketball league it's fun nd the cheapest league on Staten Island nd worth it.

(CO) Thanks mike for playing with us over the years and sharing with us your thoughts we have made some great memories and I am proud of all of your teams accomplishments. @king_orlando to follow on instagram!

5th Boro Sports Employee Of The Month

Congratulations to the January employee of the month Amanda Pullano. Amanda has worked very hard on this newsletter and has helped 5th boro take the next step doing a lot of behind the scenes organization for the company. Amanda has teamed up with myself to present the player of the days, the newsletter, photos for football, and many other tasks to make the website what it is today. We commend Amanda for her hard work and hope she continues to put as much effort in the up and coming months to make 5th Boro Sports the best league in New York City!!

Speaking of workers lets find out what it takes to run a league.. We sit down and get a behind the scenes conversation with James Horenburg who helps run the 5th Boro Flag Football league.

Halloween Party few years back Hey Arnold and Gerald…

Chris- Everyone as u see asks me and U for a job daily you tell me to take it as a compliment but I always get annoyed... I have handed the keys to the car to u and I commend u for doing a great job this far I no u care and u try and that's great I'm pleased with the success of the league so far and I have to say a great job so far but What's was one difference between being a player and running a league... What has been or is biggest surprise in other words... A Challenge and something that's gotten easier for u... What are some tips u can give to someone looking to become an official or if someone was to one day start their own sports league... What seperates 5 th BORO from the other leagues on the island?
James- As I've always said since day one 5th Boro is a family. The games we play aren't

about winning losing the points rebounds RBI touchdowns we score it's about the

people you meet the teammates you bond with memories you'll always have.
