9-7.2. Department of Mathematics

Functions

a. Prepares and provides for instruction in algebra, geometry, plane trigonometry, discrete mathematics, introduction to calculus, and any other related mathematical subjects deemed necessary or valuable as preparation for admission to and studies at USMA, to include use of the computer and handheld calculator. Conducts annual curriculum review.

b. Creates, develops and implements the standard program of instruction as well as special instructional programs for cadet candidates with specific needs such as the fundamental and advanced courses.

c. Assists the designated POI developers in creating and revising appropriate academic quizzes and examinations.

d. Reviews and revises textbooks, booklets, and supplementary worksheets and materials as needed.

e. Provides a full departmental counseling program for all cadet candidates, and maintains academic records on all cadet candidates in subject areas.

f. Maintains liaison with the Mathematics and Graphic and Computer Science Departments, USMA, and other mathematically-oriented departments regarding the USMAPS Mathematical Sciences Program of Instruction and its relevance to the academic program at USMA.

g. Reviews new academic texts on the market; recommends new texts to the Dean for approval.

h. Ensures the continuing progressive and professional development of departmental faculty members. Conducts year round in-service and professional development sessions with teaching staff.

i. Provides for attendance at regional and national conferences in regard to subject area, as appropriate.


9-7.3. Center for Enhanced Performance

Functions

a. Prepares and provides instruction on time and stress management, learning styles, note taking and test taking methods, goal setting, and other forms of self-development, and on reading improvement, such as SQ3R, efficient textbook reading, speed reading, and critical thinking skills. Conducts annual curriculum review.

b. Creates, develops, and implements the Standard Program of Instruction as well as special instructional programs for cadet candidates with specific needs such as fundamental and advanced reading and study strategies instruction.

c. Creates, administers and revises appropriate academic assignments and examinations.

d. Reviews and revises textbooks, booklets, and supplementary worksheets; creates new supplementary worksheets and booklets as needed.

e. Coordinates and oversees the Cadet Candidate Development Teams (CDT’s) and maintains records of correspondence and actions taken.

f. Collaborates with other USMAPS departments to enhance development and performance of cadet candidates in all areas of cadet candidate life.

g. Provides a full departmental counseling and advising program for all cadet candidates, and maintains academic records on all cadet candidates in subject area.

h. Provides individual appointments for cadet candidates needing assistance in academic and other developmental tasks.

i. Oversees remediation plans of students on academic probation.

j. Coordinates the peer-tutoring program.

k. Coordinates workshops for cadet candidates on various developmental and academic topics as needed.

l. Maintains liaison with the Center for Enhanced Performance and with Plebe Course Directors, USMA, regarding the USMAPS CEP program and relevance to the academic programs at USMA.

m. Reviews new academic and student development texts on the market; recommends new texts to the Dean for approval.

n. Ensures the continuing progressive and professional development of departmental faculty members. Conducts year round in-service and professional development sessions with teaching staff within the CEP and for other departments.

o. Provides for attendance at regional and national conferences in regard to subject areas, as appropriate.



Chapter 10-1

USMA Band

10-1.1. Mission

To provide musical support for official ceremonies and events for the United States Military Academy and its tenant units; United States Corps of Cadets training and educational activities; Army intercollegiate athletic programs and conducts coordination with US Army Garrison, West Point, as required.


10-1.2. Functions

Provides music for public relations concerts, patriotic events, national holiday celebrations, radio and television programs, music education centers of influence, and national and international level performances as directed by Headquarters, Department of the Army.


10-1.3. Marching Band

Functions

a. Provides musical support for United States Corps of Cadets reviews, meal formations, honor guards, and sports activities.

b. Provides musical support for Academy ceremonies and military funerals.

c. Performs in neighboring communities for patriotic celebrations/events and celebrations of national holidays.

d. Provides musical support for military ceremonies at installations without an assigned military band.
10-1.4. Concert Band

Functions

a. Performs annual concert series at the United States Military Academy.

b. Performs in neighboring communities for public relations concerts and patriotic celebrations/events.

c. Performs at official Academy ceremonies.

d. Provides music to support Department of the Army recruiting and publicity programs by participation in radio and television broadcast and other functions.
10-1.5. Jazz Knights

Functions

a. Performs for official Academy functions.

b. Performs in neighboring communities for public relations concerts and patriotic celebrations/events.

c. Performs in local high schools and colleges in support of the US Army Recruiting mission.

d. Participates in Concert Series at the United States Military Academy.

e. Provides music to support Department of the Army recruiting and publicity programs by participating in radio and television broadcasts and other civil functions.


10-1.6. Field Music (Hellcats) Group

Functions

a. Provides musical support for United States Corps of Cadets reviews, meal formations, and drills.

b. Participates in Academy ceremonies.

c. Provides buglers for all off-post military funerals.

d. Performs in neighboring communities for patriotic celebrations/events.
10-1.7. Support Staff

Functions

a. Coordinates all operational commitments for each musical performance.

b. Provides battalion level administrative and logistical support.

c. Coordinates procurement of musical instruments, uniforms, technical support equipment, sheet music and maintenance items.

d. Orders, catalogs and maintains music for all performing groups.

e. Provides audio and lighting support to the band, including recording and sound reinforcement.

f. Operates a full time instrument repair facility.

g. Provides music arrangements for marching band, concert band, jazz band, field music group and vocalist.



Chapter 10-2

2nd Aviation Detachment




10-2.1. Mission

To conduct aviation support for all USMA units, US Army Garrison, West Point and all tenant units. To provide aviation support to USMA Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (DCME) students in both airplanes and helicopters. To perform aerial fire fighting and aerial observation in support of contingency operations. To provide air support for Force Protection. To provide fixed base operation support to transient military and civilian aircraft in support of the USMA mission.


10-2.2. Functions

a. Provides rotary wing aviation support.

b. Provides support to DCME aeronautical program.

c. Provides fixed base facility support to transient units in support of USMA.


10-2.3. Detachment NCOIC

a. Provides senior NCO leadership for all enlisted personnel.

b. Prepares and executes all unit administration actions.

c. Prepares and oversees the planning and conduct of common task training.

d. Coordinates and supervises the detachment’s security requirements.
10-2.4. Quality Control NCO

a. Maintains aircraft forms and records.

b. Enforces the Weight & Balance Program for the aircraft.

c. Enforces the Army Oil Analysis Program (AOAP) for the aircraft.

d. Reports abnormal oil analysis results to the Commander and Maintenance Officer.

e. Ensures timely compliance with all AOAP directives.

f. Oversees the turn-in of affected aircraft components to CCAD.

g. Maintains the unit’s Technical Library.

h. Ensures the Federal Aviation Administration’s Air Directives are complied with on DCME aircraft.

i. Enforces compliance of all local and DA maintenance standards.


10-2.5. Maintenance

a. Schedules and prepares aircraft for flight missions.

b. Coordinates for additional maintenance support at the AVIM and DEPOT level.

c. Requests TBO Items and aircraft parts through the unit’s supply system.

d. Monitors and manages the Controlled Exchange of aircraft parts.

e. Tracks Oil Analysis requirements for five components in two UH-1H helicopters and for two C-182 Engines.

f. Insures a proper and complete supply of Petroleum, Oils and Lubricants are on hand.

g. Performs all aircraft inspections.

h. Conducts and schedules all required services and inspections for Ground Support Equipment, (GSE).
10-2.6. Operations

a. Maintains all Individual Flight Records for assigned and attached flight personnel.

b. Performs custodial duties on all Individual Flight Records for all aviators assigned to USMA.

c. Conducts flight following for aircraft flying in the local area in support of USMA.

d. Coordinates all 2nd Aviation flight support operations with USMA.

e. Maintains and inspects all Aviation Life Support Equipment, (ALSE).


10-2.7. Standards

a. Maintains all Individual Aircrew Training Folders (IATF) for all assigned and attached personnel and provides training and evaluation.

b. Implements the Aircrew Training Program.

c. Conducts Annual Proficiency and Readiness test (APART) to all assigned and attached personnel.

d. Maintains oversight of aviator readiness and adherence to flight regulations.
10-2.8. Fixed Wing Standards

a. Manages assigned DCME fixed wing aviators to include Individual Aircrew Training Folders, (IATF), and provides training and evaluation.

b. Manages flight schedule for the two US Army C-182 (Cessna 182) aircraft assigned to the DCME.

c. Manages maintenance and improvement modifications for the two C-182 aircraft with non-contract civilian maintenance facilities.

d, Oversees flying hour program budget for assigned fixed wing aircraft.

b. Responsible as the US Army Approval Authority for C-182 (Cessna 182) Aircrew Training Manual (TC 1-182).


10-2.9. Safety

a. Provides oversight and management of the detachment’s Safety Program.

b. Inspects all areas of operations to ensure compliance with DA safety policies.

c. Performs semi-annual safety surveys.




      1. Budget Analysts/Supply

a. Maintains accountability for all detachment funds.

b. Executes procurement action on all parts, supplies, and equipment.

c. Maintains accountability of all unit property.

d. Advises commander on all budget issues.
