Curated by Glenn Barkley, from the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, the exhibition brings together works by over 30 Aboriginal artists and artists groups from across Australia. Together the works explore the inter-connectedness of histories and stories that transcend traditional textile and craft-based practices. Many of the works on display use handmade string produced from plant fibres. String theory also explores the way in which people come together and communicate. The works have been developed through or evolved out of conversations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, family members and arts workers. For the artists, string becomes a physical material as well as a metaphorical fibre that binds their ideas and cultures together. As with conversations, it can be tangled and it can be tidy, strong and delicate, complex and simple. At 6.00pm on Friday 13 March join visiting MCA Assistant Curator, Megan Robson, at the Cairns Regional Gallery for an insightful discussion about works in the exhibition and the artists and art groups that have created them. People develop “survivor behaviours” as a way of coping which doesn’t always serve them well lifelong. These behaviours may involve various forms of self-harm and/or suicidal thoughts. This workshop will provide the participants with: Simple Definitions to use when talking about Self Harm and Suicidal Thoughts Consideration of the Cycle of Change and the importance of relapse as rehearsal Understanding of the Drivers of Despair, both internal and external Understanding of the Role of Stress in our lives, positive, negative , chronic and compound impacts Exploration of Circuit Breaking Techniques, to alter familiar patterns of feeling, thinking and behaviour Ideas about Tracking thoughts, feelings and behaviours in preparation for change Experience in developing individual Keep Safe Plans The tools provided are as follows: Stress Management Tool - which offers insight and understanding relative to the challenge of approaching change in our lives A Circuit Breaking Tool - which enable peoples to identify their triggers, feelings and the choices available to them when seeking to alter patterns of behaviour A Keep Safe Plan- which can be individually developed with people to allow them some power over their own choices in staying safe.
