Ref: Allen Hermann - Benjamin Graham Jr. (Phil’s Great Grandfather – James' Father) Benjamin was born March 4, 1816 in Ulster Province, Tyrone County Ireland. Ben immigrated to the U.S. in 1816, first going to Pennsylvania, then to Ohio by 1819. Ben married Jane November 14, 1844 in Coshocton Ohio. In 1849 Benjamin Graham, Jr., moved his wife and two children by covered wagon to the farm near Iowa City, Iowa. They left Coshocton County on October 1, 1849 and arrived at Dubuque, Iowa, 31 days later. There is some evidence that they sought land in Illinois and Wisconsin before settling in Iowa. On September 11, 1850 the U. S. Census found this family located on a farm in Iowa City Townships, Johnson County, Iowa. According to an article in the August 7, 1908 Iowa City Citizen about old Johnson County Pioneers, in 1857 Benjamin operated a “then widely known and hospitable tavern in Scott Township near where the Scott township Presbyterian Church now stands” (He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a republican in politics. Source: History of Johnson County IA 1836-1882, pub. 1883 in Iowa City, p.831.) According to writing by a Mabel Leech in 1934, Benjamin and Jane were founding members of the Scott Presbyterian Church which was located about 6 miles southeast of Iowa City on Highway 6 and was a community hall in 1934. In the 1880 U. S. Census, Ben was still a farmer. He died April 18, 1882 at 66 years, 1 month, 14 days in Iowa City and is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City, Iowa Lot 53-6. Her and Benjamin were devote Presbyterians and helped build the Graham Church, later called the Scott Presbyterian Church. According to the Iowa City Directory of 1890, she was a widow living at 218 North Dubuque. Jane lived with son James in 1895 in Johnson County IA. Jane was living with her widowed daughter Louise Long in Iowa City in 1900. Jane died April 1, 1904 at 85 years, 8 months, 20 days in Iowa City at the home of her son-in-law Abner W. Bradley and is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City, Iowa Lot 53-6. Children: Robert B. Graham, Caroline S. (Abner W.) Bradley, James K. Graham, Jennie/Josephine (Mrs. Francis F.) Hill, and Mollie/Louise (Mrs. Frank) Long all living in Iowa City and Elizabeth (Annis) (Mrs. Edwin) Long from Cedar Rapids. Siblings surviving were Hiram Love of Oregon, T. A. Love of Georgetown CO and Mrs. T. B. Daniels.

Graham, a prominent representative general agriculturist and successful stock raiser of Johnson County, Iowa came in the spring of 1850, and with the exception of a very brief period has been a permanent resident in his present locality for forty-three years. From early youth identified with the growth of public enterprise, he has since attaining manhood actively participated in local affairs, and as Township Trustee has materially aided in the promotion of the best interests of the community and worthily won the esteem of the general public. Our subject was born in Coshocton County, Ohio, Aug. 8, 1845, and was therefore but four years old when, in the winter of 1849, his father and mother, Benjamin and Jane (Love) Graham, came with their two little children to Iowa City and there spent the season prior to the beginning of their long residence in Scott Township. The father, the late Benjamin Graham, was a native of County Tyrone, Ireland, born March 4, 1816, and was an infant of three weeks when his parents embarked for America. He passed his early youth in Pennsylvania, but when about seventeen years of age he accompanied his father and mother to Coshocton County, Ohio, where, attaining his majority, he soon after married. Two little ones had blessed the home with their presence, a son and daughter, Robert B. and Caroline S., now Mrs. Abner Bradley, before with wife and children he journeyed to Johnson County in 1849. Settling in the spring in 1850 upon the land which he had purchased in Scott Township, he continued to reside there, with the exception of one year when he lived in Iowa City, until his death. He was a cabinetmaker by trade and an accomplished workman, but from the time he located permanently in Scott Township he devoted himself to agricultural pursuits. As a tiller of the soil Benjamin Graham was abundantly prospered, owning at the close of his life one thousand and thirteen acres of excellent land. He was a valued member of the Presbyterian church and contributed liberally to the support and extension of religious influence. Foremost in benevolent enterprises and actively interested in the progress of the township, his death was mourned as a public loss when, upon the 18th of April 1882, he passed away. His wife, the mother of our subject, was born July 11, 1818, and yet survives her husband. Robert B. was the eldest of six children, of whom one son and three daughters were born in Johnson County. Mr. Graham received a common school education in the schools of Scott Township, afterward enjoying a six months course of instruction in the State University. For two years he was the owner and manager of a machine shop in Iowa City, but with this exception has given his entire attention to farming in Scott Township with most profitable results. Our subject was married in Muscatine County, Iowa, Dec. 14, 1871, to Miss Nancy A. Pringey, a native of Penn., born in Somerset Co., Nov. 12, 1852. Her father, Jonathan Pringey, born June 9, 1818, and her mother, Elsie (Colburn) Pringey, were both natives of the Quaker State, but later made their home in Iowa, the mother dying in Muscatine County in 1868. The family of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Pringey consisted of three sons and four daughters, Mrs. Graham being the fourth child in order of birth. Seven children brightened the home circle of Mrs. and Mrs. Graham, of whom but five are now living; Luella, Harry L., Albert B., Leroy and Laura E. Charles R. died at four years of age and one passed away in infancy. The homestead, whose extensive acreage is located upon section 27, is noted as the abode of hospitality and is the scene of many a social gathering, the parents and their entire family possessing the universal regard and high esteem of a host of old-time acquaintances. No man in all the county round has a larger store of delightful and entertaining reminiscences of early days in Johnson County than our subject, who although only advanced to middle age has witnessed the development of the unbroken prairies of the state into the waving cornfields whose golden wealth of harvest has so well repaid the patient tillers of Iowa's fertile soil. Fraternally, Mr. Graham is associated with the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons and is also an honored member of the Farmer's Alliance. Graham -- There is always a peculiar connection between a man's name and his occupation or the business he is engaged in. Especially is this true when the business has been long established under the same management. For instance, the name of Graham and Livery. The "Graham Livery" is so thoroughly identified with the business interests of Iowa City that it is almost impossible to think of one without the association of the other. To think of Graham it is so very natural to immediately think of the livery business, and if one's attention is called to the livery business it is at once associated with the name of Bob Graham. Probably no other man in the county is better or more favorably known than Mr. Graham. Robert B. Graham was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, August 8, 1845. His parents were Benjamin and Jane (Love) Graham. Benjamin Graham was born in Ireland, and came to America with his parents when three weeks old. He used to remark that "he began life at an early age." The family settled first in Pennsylvania; afterwards moving to Ohio, and on October 1, 1849, the young couple left their Buckeye home and started for Iowa, taking with them young "Bob", age two, and Caroline, then just past four years of age. They landed at Dubuque, IA thirty-one days later. Prior to their arrival in Illinois?, the family made a tour of Wisconsin, but not being satisfied with conditions in the Badger state, came to Iowa and stopped for awhile at Vinton, where they had friends. Thence they came on to Iowa City, arriving in the month of November, 1849. From that time to the present "Bob" Graham has never been outside of Johnson county at anyone time longer than three and one-half months. This proves that the county "looked good to him" from the beginning and all the way through. Benjamin Graham was an influential man in the county in his day, being one of the largest landowners and most public-spirited men of his time. Everything relating to the welfare of the county and the betterment of conditions enlisted his cooperation. At the time of his death, April 18, 1882, he owned 1,013 acres of land in Johnson county. Six children were born to Benjamin and Jane Graham, our subject being the oldest. The others are: Caroline S., now Mrs. A. W. Bradley, of Chicago; James K., residing in Iowa City; Annie E., now Mrs. Ed Long, of Cedar Rapids; Josephine and Louise, twins, the former now Mrs. J. F. Hill, of Iowa City, and the latter Mrs. F. J. Long, of Iowa City. Mother Graham died April 1, 1904. After securing a good fundamental education in the country schools, our subject engaged in farming in Scott township, and continued therein until 1883. In that year he moved to Iowa City. In 1885, however, he returned to the farm, where he remained for fourteen years. November 9, 1899, he bought the livery and stock business where he was located until March 6, 1912, 217 - 221 East Washington Street. His son, Harry L., is now associated with him in the business under the firm name of Graham & Son. On Dec. 14, 1871, Mr. Graham was married to Miss Nancy A. Pringey, a native of Virginia, who came to Iowa with her parents when a child. The Pringey's settled in Muscatine county, where the mother died in 1868. The father died November 25, 1911, at the age of ninety-three. Mrs. and Mrs. Graham have five children: Luella, residing at home; Harry L., in business with his father; Albert B., associated with C. R. Owen in the C. O. D. laundry in Iowa City; Leroy, a student in the Dental Department at State University of Iowa; Laura Elsie, living at home, graduate of the Iowa City Commercial College. Our subject is liberal as to local politics and republican on national issues. He is a Knight Templar and a member of the B. P. O. E. of Iowa City. Mrs. Graham and daughter, Luella, are members of the Eastern Star. Ref: Iowa City Press Citizen, 19 Oct. 1914 - Robert Graham Died This Morn - Robert B. Graham, a pioneer business man and farmer of Johnson county, died this morning at 9:45 at his home, 305 East Burlington street. He had been in failing health, but the end came quite suddenly. Creeping paralysis was the cause of his death. Mr. Graham was one of the best known men in Johnson county. He moved to this county in November of 1849 with his parents, and grew up in the country east of Iowa City. His father owned a great deal of Johnson county land and was the possessor of over 1000 acres when he died in 1882. Robert Graham was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, Aug. 8, 1845, his parents moving to this country from Ireland. The family moved to Iowa overland in 1849. He was educated in the country schools and married in 1871 to Miss Nancy A. Pringey, of Muscatine county, a native of Virginia. He farmed in Scott township until 1883, when he moved to Iowa City, but he returned to the farm in 1885 and remained there for fourteen years. In 1899 he bought a livery business established on East Washington street on the site now occupied by the Englehart theatre, and continued in the business there until 1912 when he moved to his present location on Capitol and his son became associated in the business with him. Mr. Graham was known over the entire country, and Graham's livery barn was one of the best-known business institutions in the city. He carried on his business in a quiet and thorough manner and had the respect of the entire community. He was a member of the B. P. O. E. and also a Mason and a Knight Templar. Several children survive him besides his wife, Miss Luella is at home; Harry L., was associated with his father in the livery business; Albert B. is at home; LeRoy is a graduate of the University Dental College and is associated with Dr. John Voss of this city; and Laura Elsie, now Mrs. A. B. Martin, lives in this city. Besides these there is one brother and three sisters, James K. of this city, Mrs. Ed Long of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. J. F. Hill of this city and Mrs. F. J. Ref: Iowa City Press Citizen, 4 May 1938 - Death Takes Mrs. Graham - Lived in County Nearly all her life; plan funeral Friday - Mrs. Nancy Graham, 84, resident of Johnson county nearly all her life, died at 11:45 o'clock Tuesday night in her residence, 413 North Gilbert Street. She had been ill for several weeks. Mrs. Graham was born November 12, 1853, in Muscatine county but came to Johnson county when a small child. She was married to Mr. Robert B. Graham who preceded her in death in 1915. Her husband was a pioneer of Scott township, residing near Scott church which was the site of a stagecoach stop many years ago. He later entered the livery business in Iowa City. Surviving are one daughter, Miss Lulu Graham; three sons, Dr. L. P. Graham, Mrs. Harry Graham, and Mr. Albert Graham, all of Iowa City, and four grandchildren. Mrs. Graham was a member of the Presbyterian church. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon in the Riley chapel. Dr. Ilion T. Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery. Ref: Iowa City Press Citizen, 19 Jan. 1942 - Lifelong resident of county dies here Sunday - Miss Luella Graham, 67, life-long resident of Johnson county, died Sunday at the home of her brother, Albert B. Graham, 413 North Gilbert Street, following a lingering illness. She was born June 2, 1874, in Scott township, the daughter of Robert B. and Nancy Graham. She was a member of the Presbyterian church, the Jessamine chapter of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine and was a local Red Cross worker. Surviving are two brothers, Dr. L. P. Graham and Albert B. Graham, both of Iowa City; one niece, Betty Martin, Iowa City and three nephews, Bob Martin and John and Don Graham, all of Iowa City. Two brothers, one sister and her parents preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at Beckman's with the Rev. Dr. I. T. Jones in charge. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery. Eastern Star services will be held at Beckman's. Ref: Iowa City Press-Citizen, 22 Jul. 1939, pg. 9, col 6 -- Graham Rites are Tentatively Set -- Ambulance Driver Dies Suddenly Friday -- Funeral services for Mr. Harry L. Graham, 55, of 413 North Gilbert street, have been tentatively arranged for 2 o’clock Monday afternoon at the Riley funeral chapel. Definite arrangements will not be completed until the return of Mr. Albert Graham, a brother, from Colorado. Mr. Graham, an ambulance driver for the University hospitals, died suddenly of a heart attack in Dubuque on Friday afternoon. He formerly operated a machine shop in Iowa City and began as an ambulance driver December 1, 1932. In point of years of service he was the oldest driver for the hospitals. Mr. Graham, while waiting for a patient in Dubuque Friday, was suddenly seized by illness. He collapsed in a physician’s office and died before he could be taken to a hospital. He is survived by two brothers, Dr. L. P. Graham and Mr. Albert Graham, both of Iowa City, a sister, Miss Lulu Graham, who resided with him at their home here; one niece and three nephews. A sister and a brother preceded him in death several years ago and his mother died about a year ago. The remains are at the Riley funeral home.
