Dear Distance Learning Student

Welcome to the AMEP Distance Learning (DL) Program.


The DL program is a national program delivered to all states by one organisation – the AMEP Flexible Learning Network (AFLN). You will be working with a teacher from one member of the AFLN, Navitas English. Navitas English has over 11 years of experience delivering the AMEP Distance Learning Program.
You might like to have a look at the AMEP Distance Learning Portal. Your teacher will arrange access to this portal when you have a lesson. http://www.amepdl.net.au/

First Lesson Checklist


During your first lesson your teacher will introduce themselves and discuss the following things with you:

Your background

  1. Chat about you and your reasons for doing DL

  2. Confirm your contact details.

  3. Other study that you are doing e.g. AMEP classes, TAFE course etc.

Studying in the Distance Learning program

  1. Give you information about the different services you can access as a DL student, i.e. counselling, Home Tutor, English classes.

  2. Your 1 hour phone lesson every week

  3. 5 AMEP hours per week used in distance learning.

  4. What happens when you miss a lesson

AMEP DL Student Course Orientation


Attendance

You need to keep all your appointments for lessons. If you cannot keep an appointment, please contact your teacher or the office to let us know the reason. If you miss two appointments in a row [2 weeks of lessons], your teacher or the AMEP Pathways Advisor will phone you to discuss why you have been absent.

Stopping your Distance Learning lessons

If you start Distance Learning but cannot continue, please tell your teacher immediately. You can return to study later on.



Change of address

If you change your address, your email address or telephone number, please let your teacher know immediately.



Learning English

It is very important for you to practise English outside of your Distance Learning lessons as much as possible. Also, it is very important to do all the work in your online/written learning materials that your teacher gives you.



Your Call is the name of the Distance Learning course material. www.amepdl.net.au. The English language certificate is called the Certificate in Spoken and Written English (CSWE).

What is the CSWE?

  • You practise reading, writing, listening and speaking.

  • Your teacher will give you tests, also called assessments.

  • Your teacher will tell how well you have done and give you some feedback on your assessment.

Assessment

You will be regularly assessed on how well you are learning English. This will help you and your teacher to see how you are progressing in your learning.

If you wish to have your assessment records reviewed, you may use the Assessment Appeals Process provided on Page 9.

Pathways Advice

If you would like to talk to a Pathways Advisor about further study, employment or other information on your Individual Pathway Guide (IPG), please tell your teacher and they will help you make an appointment. If you are in a Navitas English College you can arrange a phone meeting or a face-to face meeting.


Complaints

Navitas English has a Grievance Procedure – Do you have a problem with our service? (Page 8) The procedure explains the steps to take if you have a complaint.

Bilingual Assistance

Navitas English Distance Learning employs bilingual staff to help you with your enquiry or your lesson. Please ask your teacher to find out if a staff member who speaks your first language is available.


Do you have a problem with our service?


A grievance is a complaint about unfair treatment.

What do you do if you think you have been treated unfairly?

1. Talk to your teacher or the Pathways Advisor. They may be able to help you solve the problem immediately.

2. If you are not satisfied:



  • Navitas English college student - talk to the Academic Manager or Operations Manager in your college

  • DL student from ACT, NSW, SA, Qld, WA – Talk to the Manager (Phone toll free 1300 AMEPDL / 1300 263 735).

3. If you are still not satisfied, tell the Manager that you want to talk to the Distance Learning Consortium Manager at AMES (Phone 03 9582 6433).

4. If you are an AMEP student and feel your issue is still not resolved, you may contact the Department of Education and Training (DET) via Skilling Australia on 13 38 73 or by email skilling@education.gov.au, or by mail to:

5. If you’re still not satisfied with the outcome of your complaint you may contact the Commonwealth Ombudsman on 1300 362 072 or by email ombudsman@ombudsman.gov.au, or by completing an online form at www.ombudsman.gov.au, alternatively by attending one of their offices.

Note: this agency will not usually investigate a complaint unless raised with the department first.

Assessment Appeals Process


If you wish to have your assessment results reviewed, you may request this through your teacher, or you may ask the Distance Learning Manager to arrange for a re-assessment of your work.


If you still have a training problem or concern, you may contact:


  1. The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) by visiting the following website and lodging a complaint in writing:

Give your teacher your Skype name.

Before your next lesson, turn on your computer or smart phone.

Go to Skype by clicking the iconskype. Sign in. You are now on line.

Click on Contact Request. You will find a request from your teacher to add you as a contact.

Press Add to contact to also add your teacher to your contact list.

Once you are both on line wait for your teacher to contact you in time for the lesson. You can start chatting.

Distance Learning Portal System Requirements


The Distance Learning Portal is the website where you can access your online resources.

You will need:

Computer with:

  • 1 GB of RAM

  • Pentium IV or 1 GHz Pentium-class processor

  • Sound card

  • Speakers or preferably headset with microphone

  • Printer

  • Internet Access 256/64 ADSL or above

Software

  • Microsoft Windows XP or above

  • Mac OS10, Ubuntu or other Linux based system

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 and above

  • Mozilla Firefox 3.5 and above

  • Safari 5 and above

Plug-ins

The following minimum plug-in versions may be required to access certain courses and areas of the site. If you have an older version from those listed, you may be asked to download a new version:



  • Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 or above

Accessing Online Resources




1. Using a computer

If you log on to www.amepdl.net.au to access Your Call materials using a computer and one of the following messages comes up on your screen:



  • "Pop-up blocked. To see this pop-up or additional options click here."

  • Firefox prevented this site from opening a pop-up window.

  • Please disable pop-up window blocking for this site

  • This will allow pop-ups for this site.

2. Using an IPad or an IPhone

Allowing pop-ups

If you log on to www.amepdl.net.au to access Your Call materials using an IPad or an IPhone and the following message comes up on your screen:



To use Your Call please allow or turn on popup windows for www.amepdl.net.au. Click on help for more information

Then you will need to do the following:



    1. Open the "Settings" menu on your Home screen.

    2. Tap the "Safari" tab on the Settings page. The Safari preferences screen loads.

    3. Scroll down the page to the "Security" section.

    4. Scroll down the page to “Block pop-ups”

    5. Slide the "Block Pop-Ups" switch to the "Off" position.


How to allow pop-ups


In Internet Explorer, click on the yellow bar and select Always Allow Pop-ups from This Site

In Mozilla Firefox, click on Options in the yellow bar and Allow pop-ups for amepdl.net.au



In Safari, click the Settings icon and click Block Pop-Up Windows to remove tick ()



Some toolbars may also block pop-up windows. You may need to allow pop-ups in that toolbar as well.

Below is an example of how to allow pop-ups in the google tool bar using Chrome.
