Andy Sareyan Named Executive VP of Atlantic Media Company and President of National Journal Group
WASHINGTON, D.C., October 17, 2011 - Atlantic Media Company Chairman David Bradley announced today that Andy Sareyan is joining the company as Executive Vice President of Atlantic Media Company and President of National Journal Group. Sareyan is one of the country's most accomplished media executives, serving most recently as President of Consumer Brands at the Meredith Corporation, which publishes Better Homes and Gardens, Family Circle, Parents, Fitness, More, American Baby, Traditional Home, and Midwest Living. Before joining Meredith, he spent 18 years in a number of leadership roles at Time Inc.
"At least by ambition, Atlantic Media recruits for two qualities – force of intellect and a spirit of generosity. With Andy, we get both – and an animating gift of leadership," said Atlantic Media Company chairman David Bradley. "Andy is extreme talent arriving at the company at an hour of extreme growth. We are at that uncommon moment when every brand is growing rapidly. Andy's assignment is to grow us faster still."
Atlantic Media Company is having a record year, with growth across every division and profits expected to increase 261% over last year. The Atlantic, which made a profit for the first time in recent memory last year, is on track to increase that profit by 25% this year. Unique visitors to TheAtlantic.com and TheAtlanticWire.com now total, on average, 10 million a month—double last year's traffic. This year, The Atlantic continued building new sister sites, expanding TheAtlanticWire.com and debuting TheAtlanticCities.com, both of which are off to impressive starts. National Journal re-launched last year, with new free and paid digital sites. At NationalJournal.com, both page views and unique visitors are up 300% over last year and digital ad revenue is up 45%---the best year in National Journal's history. Government Executive re-launched this month to great reviews, and its traffic has risen 40% in the last year.
Last month, Atlantic Media Company created a marketing services division and is planning several additional new initiatives over the next five years.
Sareyan brings a long track record of success to Atlantic Media Company. As President of Consumer Brands at Meredith, he led numerous corporate divisions, including digital content and operations, social and mobile marketing, consumer marketing, retail and e-commerce, and more. While there, he launched numerous digital initiatives and presided over a 30% improvement in operating profit. As President of Better Homes and Gardens from 2006 to 2008, he developed one of the largest and most profitable licensing deals in publishing history, presided over substantial digital growth, and helped launch the nationally syndicated TV show, "Better." At Time Inc., from 2002 to 2006, he served as President of Entertainment Weekly while the magazine's profits doubled. Sareyan was President of The Parenting Group from 2001 to 2002, where he oversaw record revenue and profit gains. From 1999 to 2001, he was the founding publisher of Real Simple Magazine, executing one of the most successful magazine launches ever.
Sareyan takes the helm at National Journal a year after its successful re-launch and will work side-by-side with the editorial team headed by Editor-in-Chief Ron Fournier, Editorial Director Ron Brownstein, National Journal Magazine Editor Charles Green, and a staff of some of the most respected editors and correspondents on politics and policy in the country. He will help to expand National Journal's already aggressive innovation agenda, which includes transitioning from a subscription model to a full-service membership model.
"I look forward to working with David Bradley and Justin Smith, who have built a company with an impressive culture of innovation, a team that is rich with top talent, and a perfect chemistry for future growth," said Andy Sareyan. "Atlantic Media has made enormous strides recently and I'm eager to help this great enterprise achieve its ambitious goals to enter new markets and expand globally. I'm also excited to be heading the National Journal Group to help build upon the success this division has had in the last year. They already have a world-class editorial team that creates products read by some of the most influential people in America. It's hard to imagine a stronger base for growth."
