CMPSC 309 - Issues in Computing - Enrollment: 50 in two sections
Added a significant ethics component to the course, on the basis of my participation in the NSF sponsored Computer Ethics workshop (DOLCE) held in June 2000; also made heavy use of the web-based courseware Blackboard.
New course developed for Honors Program. This included an introduction to the principles of Computer Science, problem-solving and programming, basic web page design & construction, and computer ethics. The students designed their Honors Class web site. I created a complete web site for the course.
Spring '01 courses:
CMPSC 301 – Operating Systems – Enrollment: 12
CMPSC 201 – Visual Basic Programming – Enrollment: 40 in two sections
Independent Studies:
Spring: Supervised the following Senior Seminar projects:
Heidi Horne – Smart Card Technology
Craig Carlson – Computer Games
Advising work:
I served as academic advisor for approximately 50 Computer Science majors; filled in for Jean Mehta (on sabbatical) and handled, in Spring, her 50 advisees as well.
In my role as Chair of Computer Science, I have advised numerous students, prospective students and prospective majors and minors; also prospective graduate students.
Teaching innovations:
I used Blackboard for CMPSC 309.
I used a variety of web-based visualizations programs for CMPSC 301.
I continue to use various forms of technology (eg, Internet, electronic lecture media, email) in all of my classes; web-based instruction to enhance courses.
I also continue to work with active and collaborative learning strategies.
