Application Process Opens for Facade Improvements
Pilot program to help restore and enhance buildings in and around Downtown
ATLANTA (Feb. 24, 2014) – Downtown Atlanta buildings will get a makeover with the launch of a pilot grant program to improve the quality of life in the area along the Atlanta Streetcar route. Applications are now being accepted for the Downtown Façade Program, in which business and property owners receive $2 million in Westside Tax Allocation District (TAD) funding and $3 million in Eastside TAD funding.
“We’re committed to making our Downtown area a vibrant place to live, work and play,” said Mayor Kasim Reed. “These visual enhancements are part of a larger effort to revitalize these communities, increase the appeal of Downtown and build more attractive, stable neighborhoods.”
Business owners are required to cover one-third of the improvement costs to be eligible for the grants. The TAD funding will cover enhancements to the existing facades, including painting, lighting, windows, doors, sidewalk repair, restoration of historic properties and more. Preference will be given to properties next to the Streetcar route, within the South Central Business District and in the Vine City and English Avenue communities.
“We are really excited about this program because it's a proven and effective way to partner with the private sector to bring new investment and jobs to the heart of a city," said Brian P. McGowan, president and CEO of Invest Atlanta. “Mayor Reed has made beautification of the city a top priority and we want to make sure that when residents and visitors come to downtown they see a place that is exceptionally attractive, lively and enjoyable."
