As an almost 10 year big fan of Apple, I am eager to say I am always by the side of Apple. However, when it come to the war between Apple(iOS) and Google(Android), the situation become complicated.
iOS, operating system designed by Apple, was unveiled with iphone on January 9, 2007, and released in June of the same year, The birth of iphone with iOS, started the smartphone revolution, and was the symbol of the new era of mobile phone. It’s obvious that such great first-mover advantage grow Apple to be the giant of this new field. Actually, when its iPod has developed to iPod Touch with multiple functions that far away from a simple mp3, the brought-out of iPhone was anticipatable.
iOS, designed and developed by Apple, originally for iPhone, has been shipped on the ipod touch, ipad and Apple TV (wikipedia). No third party hardware are allowed to run iOS. According to the recent research released on October 20, 2010, more than 300,000 iOS applications are available on Apple’s App store.
When Google purchased Android Inc., which company developed Android, a mobile operating system, Apple and any other companies who are interested in mobile phone market should notice Google’s ambitious on entering this new field. Open Handset Alliance (OHA), which concludes Google and other hardware, software and telecom companies, was built to develop and release Android to the world. OHA is tasked to develop open standard for mobile devices. There are currently 100,000 apps available for Android.
According to marketing research published on August 18, 2010, Mobile phone, based-on android OS, occupies 17.2% global market, raised from 1.8% in 2009. At the same time. the percentage of iOS is 14.2%.
Data of the market share spurs the overwhelming attitudes supporting that Android will finally overcome its competitors towards the mobile operating system war. In addition, this strong conviction is also based on Apple ‘s “control every thing” nature. Compared with Google’s open nature, Apple’s culture is “closed”. As the emperor of its products, iPod, iPad and iPhone, Apple regulates the routes for its carriers, customs and developers to approach. Moreover, such conviction is fortified by Apple’s failure in the war with Windows PC. The war between Android and iOS is defined as the war between “Open” and “Closed”.
To analyze the war between the Android and iOS, we should look at Android’s new market share first. There are two factors worked together spurring the rapid growth of Android market share. Symbian, whose occupation dropped from 51% to 41.2% contributed its important customers to Android and iOS. Secondly, the productivity of iPhone limited the competitive of iOS. Android mobile phone are provided by different manufactures while iPhone is only sold by one manufacturer and only on a single carrier network. It is undeniable that Android have occupied a great percentage, but whether the market share can be use to judge whether it will overcome iOS is ambiguous.
The major difference between Android an iOS is that Android is a open source platform and iOS is a closed source platform. “Google released most of the Android code under the Apache License, a free software and open source license” (wikipedia), and Android encourage users to develop their own apps, becoming not only users but also developers. “with its open source model, any person, any company in the world can contribute to the Android software repository” (Keith Kleiner, 2010). At the same time, “Apple strictly controls the developer’s creativity freedom by any means. Developers to develop native applications for the iPhone have to pay an Apple Developer Connection membership fee” as George Bernard Shaw mentioned. At the first glance, Apple strict the creativity of developer which encouraged by Android to a great extent. In the long run, I support that the open source model which involves more people in, should be better for both customers and companies. But look at the nascent mobile app market, I admit that, open source model generates the big headache of Android. Apple’s strong control “keep the nascent app market a safe and trustworthy place to find app”, at the same time, Android app developers has to deal with “the headache of building apps that can work on multiple versions of Android software and dozen of different version of hardware” (Keith Kleiner, 2010).
The similarity between the war of Windows PC-Apple, and Apple(iOS)-Google(Android), seems like another strong evidence to anticipate the failure of iOS. However, we should not ignore the difference. Personal computer at that time was a rapidly increasing market, in which strong personal need could not be fulfilled easily, and such situation provided manufacturer opportunities to expand their market. Nowadays, mobile market is basically stable. Smartphone, though provides multiple function and has attracted great attention from the public, is just encroaching the market of traditional mobile phone. In addition, when it comes to the brand loyalty, Apple has more relevant products like iPod and iPad. Hardware brought out by Apple has built a strong tie between customers and Apple. On the other side, since Android phones are produced by different manufactures, customer loyalty is towards to the mobile phone brand more than Google directly. Open to different manufactures for Android is a double-edged sword. It spurs Android’s rapid growth on market share, and at the same time, the different size of screen, different design of UI and different hardware of Android phones make difficulty in app designing and system compatibility. Moreover, The most advantage of Apple is that Apple understand customer better. Along with the raising of Android’s market share, Google is getting more and more close to its goal----sale more advertisement on mobile platform, which is needless and unwanted. I want to talk about the greatest strength of iOS. Apple has gain great success from relevant mobile devices besides smartphone. iOS which is also utilized on ipod Touch and iPad encourages existent users who are familiar iOS to purchasing iPhone. Last but not the least, if history repeats itself, How stupid must Apple be if it replicate its failure.
In a sum, though is situation a the war between Apple(iOS) and Google(Android) is still complicated, I anticipate Apple are more likely to win the game, unless it ignores the open nature of the smartphone in the future.
