A Joint Resolution designating annually the Atlantic City Marathon as the New Jersey Festival of Running, an official State event.
Whereas, Atlantic City annually hosts a running event which includes one of America's five oldest 26.2
mile marathons, as well as a 13.1 mile half marathon, a ten kilometer race, a five kilometer race,
a two mile Healthwalk, and a Kids Fun Run; and
Whereas, This event promotes running and cardiovascular fitness, the health benefits of which include reduced risk of heart disease,
diabetes, obesity, and depression; and
Whereas, This event creates national publicity for Atlantic City and the State of New Jersey with nationwide media coverage in consumer and national running publications and sports broadcasts; and
Whereas, This event provides an opportunity for tourists, runners,
volunteers, celebrities, businesses, and nonprofit organizations to interact in a wholesome environment; and
Whereas, This event draws thousands of visitors from around the country
to the State of New Jersey, promotes the Atlantic City area's entertainment amenities and attractions, and generates autumn tourism for the New Jersey shore; and
Whereas, It is appropriate that the Governor and Legislature annually designate the Atlantic City Marathon as the New Jersey Festival of Running,
an official State event; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. The Governor and Legislature shall designate annually the Atlantic City Marathon as the New Jersey Festival of Running, an official State event.
2. The Governor shall issue a proclamation calling upon public officials and the citizens of this State to observe the event with appropriate activities and programs.
3. This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This joint resolution designates
the Atlantic City Marathon, held annually in Atlantic City, as the New Jersey Festival of Running, an official State event. New Jersey annually hosts one of the oldest marathons in the country. By designating the Atlantic City Marathon as the New Jersey Festival of Running, the State officially recognizes the value of the event and promotes the manifold health benefits associated with the sport.
