1.0 Bicycle Nova Scotia Funding and Projects – 2015
Anyone applying for funding from BNS, or attending BNS funded projects must be a BNS race-licensed member in good standing. Funding applications must be completed and received by Bicycle Nova Scotia by July 31st for consideration. Projects are subject to review and may be canceled due to lack of funding, lack of qualified athletes or unavailability of required staff or coaches.
Any individual award of funding through the following projects will only be paid upon completion of the project by the applicant.
Inclusion in current year projects does not guarantee inclusion in future projects. BNS reserves the right to alter its project schedule each year.
Please note:
1. Eligibility for 2015 Elite Support will depend in part on results obtained during the 2014 race season. Attendance and performance at the 2014 Road or MTB National Championships will also be considered in awarding 2015 Elite Support.
2. Only Nova Scotia athletes in U23 and below categories are eligible for the funding listed below. Athletes must hold a valid Cycling Canada (BNS) race license, and must list Nova Scotia as their province of residence in race results. Grassroots funding is intended for programs in Nova Scotia.
Applications are held on the BNS site at the same location as this document; see applicable file:

1.1 MTB
MTB programs for 2015 include Elite, Development and Grassroots. As an Olympic and Canada Games discipline, XC mountain biking will remain a large focus of development for BNS.
1.1.1 MTB – Grassroots Programs
BNS will continue to support Grassroots programs with funding up to $1000 per year. Funding for the programs must be applied for before July 31, 2015, and will be considered on a case by case basis. The programs should be run through the cycling clubs, and may include introductory cycling camps or introductory racing events for kids and novices. The programs that will be considered for funding should be designed to encourage young participants to come out and try racing and also include some type of coaching component. BNS welcomes all proposals, especially those with new and creative ideas!
Developmental Projects are intended to support coaches, athletes and clubs to attend regional or out of province competitions (typically Quebec Cup and Ontario Cup races) for the 2015 season. These are intended to increase athlete and club coach experience at larger and more competitive events than what are normally available in Nova Scotia. Atlantic region travel as a developing junior team is also a valid and supported project.
1.1.3 MTB – Elite Support
Developmental Projects are intended to support coaches, athletes and clubs to attend Canada Cups and National Championships for the 2015 season.
We will support elite athletes in making the National Team by the most reasonable of available methods. Generally, this consists of participation in the Canada Cup race series, while the National Championship is the most important race of the year and is the race that provides the best chance to be selected to National development projects, World Championships, and ultimately the National Team. To qualify for funding riders must race at Nationals and hold a valid CC Elite or Junior racing license.
1.2 Road
Road programs for 2015 include Elite, Development and Grassroots. As an Olympic and Canada Games discipline, Road is a large focus of development for BNS.
1.2.1 Road – Grassroots Programs
BNS will continue to support Grassroots programs with funding up to $1000 per year. Funding for the programs must be applied for before May 31, 2015, and will be considered on a case by case basis. The programs should be run through the cycling clubs and may include introductory cycling camps or introductory racing events for kids and novices. The programs that will be considered for funding should be designed to encourage young participants to come out and try racing and should also include some type of coaching component. BNS welcomes all proposals, especially those with new and creative ideas!
1.2.2 Road – Development Programs
Developmental Projects are intended to support coaches, athletes and clubs to attend out of province competitions (typically Quebec Cup and Ontario Cup races) for the 2015 season. These are intended to increase athlete and club coach experience at larger and more competitive events than what are normally available in Nova Scotia. Atlantic region travel as a developing junior team is also a valid and supported project.
1.2.3 Road – Elite Support
We will support elite athletes in making the National Team by the most reasonable of methods by which to make the team. Traditionally the National Championships is the most important race of the year and it is the race that provides the best chance for making the National Team, in conjunction with a high level of performance at other elite competitions.
Races that may influence committee choice selection to the National team are ones such as Grand Prix Cycliste de Beauce, which U23 riders can participate in; the Tour de L’Abitibi, which should be a major focus of the season for male Juniors and Tour de la relève internationale de Rimouski for female juniors. BNS encourages Nova Scotia’s athletes to find composite teams to participate in these races.
Selection criteria:
-
For Beauce, a maximum of three athletes will be funded. If more than three attend, the three athletes with the highest CCA Road Series points will be awarded funding. Athletes will only be awarded funding if they are on a composite club/team that does not pay them to do the race, or if they join an Atlantic Cycling Center team.
-
For the Tour de L’Abitibi, and Tour de la releve, a maximum of two Juniors will be awarded funding to compete with the Atlantic Cycling Center team. In the event that more than two Juniors qualify, the top two in the BNS Provincial Series (Category A) will be awarded funding.
Funding available:
-
Elite funding for Beauce will be up to $600 per rider (maximum of three athletes).
-
Junior funding for the Tour de L’Abitibi (with the Atlantic Cycling Center team) will be $500 per rider (maximum of two athletes).
2015 National Road Race Championships
To qualify for funding you must be racing at the national level and hold a valid CC elite 1,2,3 race license and have a good chance of being selected for the National Team, in the opinion of the Athlete and Coaching Development Committee. Any rider who does not meet these extremely demanding requirements is welcome to take part in further development programs that have been laid out for 2015 to increase their chances of meeting the criteria for next season.
Road World Championships/Pan Am Games/Commonwealth Games/Olympics
If any BNS license holder is named to the CCA National Team and selected to represent Canada at any of the major games, the athlete may be considered for funding. The funding will be considered on a case by case basis, subject to budget constraints. Typically, there is additional funding available for these athletes outside the scope of BNS support.
Other National Team Projects
For events other than those included as part of the projects described above, BNS will consider special funding for an athlete to facilitate an athlete’s participation.
1.3 Cyclocross
BNS will consider funding application for cyclocross national and world championship events on a case-by-case basis.
1.4 BMX – Plans for the future.
BNS will not allocate any funding to Nova Scotia athletes for BMX in 2015 as all possible BMX funding will be directed to the development of BMX tracks in Nova Scotia. Clubs interested in building a track may apply for funding once the track building process is underway. Funding will be considered on a case by case basis and will only be allocated after land and other resources have been confirmed.
