Atlantic Arborists Learn Aerial Rescue & First Aid Techniques
Truro -Professional arborists from the three Atlantic provinces met in Truro, NS on Saturday April 25 th for their annual ISA-Atlantic Chapter spring meeting . The event included a business meeting, panel discussion and an afternoon featuring aerial rescue demonstrations on the campus trees of the Nova Scotia Agriculture College Arboretum.

Techniques of rescuing an injured arborist

In the morning a lively panel discussion on the Trends, Challenges and Opportunities in the Arboriculture industry followed the business meeting. Panelists included: NSAC professor Tracey Mackenzie of the Environmental Horticulture program, Moncton Parks Supervisor, Dan Hicks, Commercial Arborist and Atlantic Tree Climbing Champion Matt Follett of Treeworks Ltd. and ISA-Atlantic president and Consulting Arborist, Stan Kochanoff.
It was felt that many of the problems municipal arborists face today is the result of poor planning and placement of trees in the urban forest setting. As the municipal forester is responsible for the care and health of the trees there is strong case for arborists to be part of the planning team. Arborists need to promote their cause more vigorously with other design disciplines
The afternoon session consisted of mock aerial rescues and first aid demonstrations conducted by arborist Matt Follett and a group of volunteer climbing arborists.

Lowering of injured tree worker

In some instances, tree workers are injured while in the tree and require on- the spot first aid and assistance

descending the tree.
Plans are now underway for the Chapter’s Annual General meeting and Tree climbing Championship to be held in Saint John New Brunswick in September.
