Automotive Design Mr. Graves
Auto Design 101 Project
Step-by-Step
Step 2: Complete a ABrand Analysis@. Research when the model was first introduced, changes it has seen over it=s history, what it looks like today, and if possible, where it is headed in the future. Gather specs and photographs to show changes and communicate them to your classmates. The information you can find will depend on the vehicle - some have lots of information available, others don=t. With this in mind, you can show the total evolution of the vehicle, or select major changes and highlight them.
In order to understand the present and prepare for the future, we must understand the past. In auto design, the past is of great importance. We can understand the culture that lead to the design of a vehicle, the reception of the design from the public, and see how the vehicle has managed to evolve, in things like safety, styling, and technology, without losing it=s identity.
The bulk of this information requires careful research. It can come from books, the Internet, or contact with the manufacturers. The automobile and it=s evolution is a vast subject. Think about what you are looking for before you start research so you don=t get bogged down with unnecessary information.
Books: Look for specific titles -AThe evolution of the Honda Accord@, History of the Honda Accord@. If you have no luck, broaden your search- AHistory of Honda@, AForeign Auto Manufacturers@......
Internet: Use the same strategy as searching for a book. Start with detail and broaden if necessary. Use words in your search like: evolution, history, transition, technological advances, safety advances - with the manufacturer and model of the vehicle you are researching.
Most vehicles have groups of followers. You may find very good information from this type of group. Dodge Truck Owners, Porsche Owners...
You may also check periodicals (magazines and papers). Some magazines are specific to certain vehicles.
Manufacturer: You can always go right to the source. Contacting the manufacturer will insure your information is accurate. You can contact through the internet, email, phone, or letter. Keep in mind you are required to meet deadlines - be prepared even if you have contact trouble. You can always stop by a dealership and ask for help. They might be impressed with your efforts....who knows, you could get a job.
Keep in mind what you NEED TO KNOW.....
Introduction of Vehicle - The first one, why was it designed, info about the culture and economy.
Vehicle Evolution - Changes - minor and major, safety, technology, economy, and WHY
Current Vehicle - what does it look like now - how is it=s sales, who is buying - the future
Document your findings - photos, charts, models, drawings.......................................................
