Karen BurtKaren Burt was sponsored by the Rotary Club of the Howe of Fife to take part in a visit to the European Parliament in 2002. She was one of 32 Scottish pupils who joined pupils from 9 other European countries in the programme and in order to gain a scholar ship, she had to complete a CV, a personal statement and an essay entitled "The United States of Europe?" - all of this followed by an interview. The young people had to participate in discussion and conversation involving French, German and English. Parrticipating pupils must be able to speak at least one foreign language. In the case of all the Scottish students, they had passed Higher French. The re sults of their debates are presented to the European Parlia ment. The visit lasted 4 days and the accommodation was in a hotel in Strasbourg. Karen achieved 5 "A" passes in her Highers last year and is currently studying Advanced Higher German and French, as well as an Intermediate course in Spanish. She intends to study Modern Languages and European Studies at Edinburgh University. Elizabeth ButtercaseMrs Elizabeth Forrester entered BBS in 1931. She spent four years as a driver in the Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War before becoming a Housewife. She lived in Dunshalt. Jane ButtercaseJane (Jean) Buttercase (Mrs Paterson), of Balgove Farm, St Andrews and formerly of Mount Farm, Cupar, died on 12th October 1991 after a long illness. It is believed she started at BBS in 1926. Eilidh CageEilidh Cage (2000) was due to set off in February 2006 for 3 months in China where she was to be teaching English in Yantai. She was travelling under the auspices of the Global Volunteer Network and was to fly first to Moscow before boarding the Trans Siberian Express for the next part of the journey. She hoped to spend a week in Japan before returning home. Ronald James CairdRon Caird of Newport got to know Justin Rose in 1995 at Scotscraig Golf Course and realised then that Justin had great talent. In 1998 17 year old Justin Rose had a remarkable performance at the Open Golf Championship at Royal Birkdale. Ron keeps in touch with Justin and is quite sure that he will be an Open champion in the future. Ron, who starterd in second year at Bell Baxter in 1948, retired in 2000 from a career spent entirely with D C Thomson in Dundee, apart from 2 years of National Service in the Royal Air Force. Most of this time was spent working in children's publications, but latterly he was involved in syndication and licensing, and he represented the company for 10 years at the Frankfurt and Bologna book fairs. He has a keen interest in drama and received the National Operatic and Dramatic Association Gold Medal for 50 years' service. He was the founder of the Thomson-Leng Musical Society and is its Honorary President, a position which he holds also in the Tayport Amateur Musical Society. He is also a trustee of the Whitehall Theatre in Dundee. He has many hobbies which will doubtless prevent boredom from ever setting in. Numbered among them are swimming, water-colour painting and golf, and he is a Past President of the Rotary Club of the North of Fife. He has been an Elder of the Church for 37 years and was Captain of the Boys' Brigade for 8 years. Isobel CairnsMrs Isobel Donaldson entered BBS in 1942. After School she attended Dundee Training College then specialised in Infants & Nursery, becoming Head of a nursery school in Livingston. George CalleyGeorge Calley (1935) died on 15th April 1999 after a long illness. On leaving school, George entered the building trade, until the war saw him enlist in the Royal Air Force. He returned to his previous occupation in 1946. In 1950 he went to Agricultural College and became a Teacher of Rural Science in Fife Schools until 1966. From 1966-86 he was a Lecturer in Horticulture at Kingsway College, Dundee. He is survived by his wife Marion (née Skinner) (1941) (qv). George had undertaken the writing and publication of Collessie - a Parish Alphabet but unfortunately he died before he was able to complete it. However, his wife, Marion, decided that the project should be completed and the book has now been published. The contents cover Collessie, Ladybank, Giffordtown, Charlottetown, Edentown and farms in the area, all presented alphabetically. The book costs £9 and can be obtained from Ladybank Post Office. If it requires to be posted, it should be purchased from Mrs Marion Calley, Rose Neuk, Giffordtown, Cupar, KY15 7JW. The price including postage is £10.80. James CameronJames Cameron entered BBS in1941. After National Service of two years in the Royal Air Force, James joined the Royal Bank of Scotland. He retired as a Manager having served them for 37 years. He lived in Glenrothes. Neil CameronNeil Cameron (Kettlebridge) was School Captain for 1996-97. Thomas CameronThomas Cameron (S1) won the under-14 class at the Men's All-round Gymnastics Scottish Championships in Perth in 2012. He won gold medals on the parallel bars, high bar, rings and vaults, and a silver medal on the pommel horse and bronze on the floor. He also had the highest overall score out of all age groups. In November he represented Great Britain in Milan where he won the Bcrtolazzi Memorial Cup and he is the current (2012) British pommel horse champion. He competed in the London Open championship in March 2012. Wilfred Cameron(1943- BBHS 1955-61 Wilf Cameron studied Geography at Aberdeen University after leaving School. It was there that he met his wife, Alison, who was also a geography student. After a spell teaching in a school in Perth, Wilf joined the staff of his old alma mater eventually succeeding his own teacher of the subject, Sandy Adamson, as Principal Geography Teacher in 1980. Wilf remained at Bell Baxter until his retirement in 2006. Wilf is a keen golfer and a member of the Rotary Club of the Howe of Fife.
