Dr Piot has a medical degree from the University of Ghent, Belgium and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Antwerp, Belgium. He has held Professorships in Microbiology and Public Health at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, the Free University of Brussels, and the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and has done research at the University of Washington, Seattle. He was one of the discoverers of the Ebola virus in Zaire in 1976. Born in 1949 in Belgium, Dr Piot is the author of 15 books and over 500 scientific articles. Kathleen CraveroDeputy Executive Director, UNAIDS Nationality: AmericanLanguages: English, FrenchKathleen Cravero is currently Deputy Executive Director of UNAIDS. She assists the Executive Director in overseeing both the programme and administrative operations of UNAIDS, as well as UNAIDS’ relationships with a broad range of international and UN partners. Dr Cravero has special responsibilities in the areas of governance, resource mobilization, advocacy and leadership initiatives. In over two decades of experience in international development, primarily working within the United Nations system, she has served as UNICEF Programme Coordinator in Chad, UNICEF Representative in Uganda and as UN Resident, Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Burundi. Dr Cravero has a doctorate in Political Sciences from Fordham University and a Masters in Public Health from Columbia University. Julian Lob-LevytSenior Policy Adviser, UNAIDS Nationality: BritishLanguages: English, FrenchJulian Lob-Levyt is Senior Policy Adviser to the Executive Director at UNAIDS. For the past five years he was the Chief Health and Population Adviser (latterly Chief Human Development Adviser) at DFID, with overall policy responsibility for health, HIV and recently education. He has extensive experience in development. Prior to his position at DFID, Mr Lob-Levyt spent more than 15 years living and working in the Pacific Region, Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. During this time he worked in the field of health and development for Overseas and Development Assistance (ODA), WHO, the European Commission (EC) and the UK Department for International Development (DFID). Mr Lob-Levyt has also worked in the academic field, notably as a lecturer in maternal and child epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Michael IskowitzSenior Policy Adviser, Washington, DC, UNAIDS Nationality: AmericanLanguages: EnglishMichael Iskowitz is an attorney, clinical psychologist and policy/strategy/public relations specialist who has been engaged in the fight against AIDS for more than 15 years. Prior to joining UNIADS, he co-founded the International AIDS Trust (IAT), a US non-profit organization created to mobilize the will, funding and action needed to effectively fight AIDS worldwide. He served for three years as Senior Policy Advisor to the White House Office of National AIDS Policy during the Clinton Administration, where he helped to enhance the US government’s response to the global epidemic. In addition, Mr Iskowitz served for a decade as Chief Counsel on Poverty, Disability and Family Policy to Senator Ted Kennedy, Chairman of the US Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources. In this capacity, he was the lead Senate staff person on AIDS and authored most of the US government’s AIDS legislation. Office for Monitoring and EvaluationPaul De LayDirector, Monitoring and Evaluation, UNAIDS Nationality: AmericanLanguages: English, FrenchDr Paul De Lay is Director of Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) at UNAIDS since February 2003. His current responsibilities include directing UNAIDS’ role in monitoring the status of the epidemic and the impact of the response, harmonizing indicators and methodologies for data collection and analysis and tracking of resource flows from global donors and expenditure within countries. Prior to this appointment, he served as Senior Advisor to USAID on HIV/AIDS and as Chief of USAID’s HIV/AIDS Division. Dr De Lay practiced clinical medicine for 13 years and has training and experience in family practice, infectious and tropical diseases, epidemiology, preventive medicine and public health. In 1988, Paul De Lay joined the World Health Organization’s Global Programme on AIDS, working primarily in Malawi. He received his MD from the University of California and a Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He is Board Certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health. Nicole MassoudMonitoring and Evaluation Officer, UNAIDS Nationality: Lebanese and FrenchLanguages: French, English, Arabic and SpanishIn her present position as a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Nicole Massoud is involved in the preparation of global reports on progress made towards implementing the UNGASS Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS. She also provides advice to countries on their monitoring and evaluation strategies and ensures that monitoring and evaluation activities of major UNAIDS partners are properly coordinated for harmonization purposes. Previously, Ms Massoud worked with UNICEF and CIET International for more than ten years, focusing on community-based research. She conducted numerous surveys in Asia, Africa, Europe and North America on social issues such as education of young girls; caring practices; health and hygiene; smoking among young people; food security; support networks in emergency situations and opinions about public services. Ms Massoud holds a Master’s in Law and Management and a Master’s of Science in Management of International Public Service Organizations from New York University. Lisa RegisTechnical Officer, UNAIDS Nationality: Trinidad and TobagoLanguages: English, SwedishLisa Regis joined UNAIDS in 2000, working specifically on the monitoring of global AIDS financial resources. Prior to joining UNAIDS she was at WHO, dealing with environmental health and chemical safety issues and later on with globalization and cross-sectoral policy issues. Her previous experience was with her national Government where she specialized in sustainable development issues. Country and Regional Support DepartmentMichel SidibeDirector, Country and Regional Support, UNAIDS Nationality: MalaianLanguages: French, EnglishBefore joining UNAIDS as Director of the Country and Regional Support Department in October 2001, Michel Sidibe, worked with the NGO “Terre des Hommes” in Mali and then for UNICEF as a Country Representative in Burundi, Swaziland, Uganda and Zaire. Besides managing programmes of cooperation and assistance, he devoted considerable energy to awareness-raising amongst local and international leaders with regard to women and children and the issues of malnutrition, abduction and the AIDS epidemic. He then focused on fundraising, particularly for AIDS in Uganda where he was Chair of the UN Theme Group on HIV/AIDS. Mr Sidibe has post-graduate degrees in Economic Sciences, International Development and in Social Planning from the “Faculté des Sciences Economiques” and the “Faculté des Lettres et Sciences Humaines”, University of Clermont-Ferrand, France. Jantine JacobiSenior Adviser, Country Support Care and Treatment, UNAIDS Nationality: DutchLanguages: English, DutchA health systems specialist and physician, Jantine Jacobi pursued advanced studies in child development and preventive health care of infants, applied epidemiology, gender and reproductive health and health systems management at universities in her native Netherlands, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. She worked for WHO on the integrated management of childhood illnesses, reproductive health and AIDS in Namibia, Nepal and Zambia. As the UNAIDS Country Coordinator in Uganda, Ms Jacobi played a key role in the establishment of the HIV/AIDS Partnership, a Uganda-led HIV/AIDS coordination system, and in the subsequent refocusing of the UN Theme Group on HIV/AIDS. During her assignment as UNAIDS Country Coordinator for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine she was key in advancing the comprehensive care agenda and the joint establishment of national M&E systems. She is currently Senior Adviser for country support for care and treatment within the UNAIDS Secretariat and is focusing on country-led processes to scale up treatment. This includes facilitating involvement of people living with HIV, multi-sectoral support for treatment access, harmonized action among partners, and effective support from the UN Theme Groups on HIV/AIDS for the implementation of national treatment plans. Rik PeeperkornAssociate Director, Strategic Support Division, UNAIDS Nationality: DutchLanguages: English, German, Dutch, French and SpanishRik Peeperkorn (MD, MPH) is the Associate Director of the Strategic Support Division at UNAIDS. The Strategic Support Division focuses on the following areas: operationalisation of regional technical support facilities and capacity development; mainstreaming of AIDS; humanitarian affairs; partnerships and policy guidance. Before joining UNAIDS in August 2002, Mr Peeperkorn worked over 15 years in the field of public health in Asia and Africa. Bob VerbruggenTechnical Adviser, Mainstreaming AIDS in Development, UNAIDS Nationality: DutchLanguages: Dutch, French, English and basic Spanish, German ItalianAs Technical Advisor, Mainstreaming AIDS in Development, Mr Verbruggen coordinates the UNAIDS Secretariat's work to support effective mainstreaming of AIDS into national development instruments and processes. He is also the focal point for the partnership between UNAIDS and GTZ, facilitating collaboration between the two institutions at both central and country levels. In 2000 he obtained an interdisciplinary Master’s of Science in Applied Development from Tulane University, New Orleans. He then coordinated GTZ’s Regional AIDS Programme for Africa based in Ghana. He also assisted the Ghana AIDS Commission in developing its monitoring and evaluation system and pushing the national mainstreaming agenda. Mr Verbruggen has obtained his medical degree and diploma in Tropical Medicine in Belgium. Meskerem Grunitzky-BekeleAssociate Director, Africa Division, UNAIDS Nationality: Ethiopian and TogoleseLanguages: Amharic, English, FrenchBorn and raised in Ethiopia, Meskerem Grunitzky-Bekele completed her medical studies at the Université d’Aix in Marseilles, France. Widely experienced as a researcher, educator and administrator she has worked and taught in many countries in West Africa, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Togo. From 1981 to 1991, she was Head of Department of Infectious Diseases at the University Hospital and lecturer at the Medical School in Togo. She was Director of Togo’s National AIDS and STDs Programme from 1992 to 1996. Prior to taking up her current post as Associate Director in the Africa Division at UNAIDS, she was the team leader of the UNAIDS Intercountry Team for West and Central Africa, based in Côte d'Ivoire. Roger Salla NtoungaDeputy Associate Director, Africa Division, UNAIDS Nationality: CameroonianLanguages: French, English and a good understanding of GermanRoger Salla Ntounga is currently the Deputy Associate Director of the UNAIDS Africa Division, providing support to 45 countries in Africa, supporting the Theme Group mechanism and building partnerships at country level. He joined UNAIDS in July 1998 as Programme Development Adviser and later became Sub-Regional Coordinator for West and Central Africa. After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine, Saint Etienne, France, Mr Salla Ntounga completed a Master’s of Science in Community Health from Heidelberg University. He set up the National AIDS Programme in Cameroon in 1989 and continued to work full-time on AIDS programme development and management as National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) Manager in Cameroon until 1994. He then became Team Leader of the GTZ Regional AIDS Programme for West and Central Africa, covering over 18 countries. Kizito Bishikwabo NsarhazaProgramme Development Adviser, Africa Division, UNAIDS Nationality: Congolese (DR Congo)Language: English, French, SwahiliA graduate of Université Hassan II in Morocco, Kizito Bishikwabo Nsarhaza holds degrees in International Economics and Development Cooperation and a PhD on “Health sector reform and its impacts on the market” from the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium. Since 2000, Kizito Bishikwabo Nsarhaza is working as Programme Development Adviser in the UNAIDS Africa Division. Prior to joining UNAIDS, he worked with the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development on several economic, social and sustainable development projects. Between 1998 and 1999, Mr Bishikwabo Nsarhaza assisted WHO (departments of Intensified Support to Countries in Greatest Needs and the Health Service Delivery) in the organization’s work on the approach to the informal health market, including access to HIV care and treatment, health care financing and access for medically underserved populations. Geoff MantheyChief, Country Response Information System Unit, UNAIDS Nationality: AustralianLanguages: EnglishAs Chief of the Country Response Information System Unit at UNAIDS Geneva, Geoff Manthey is responsible for the overall development and implementation of the Country Response Information System (CRIS). This includes the database development process, as well as capacity development relating to the use of the System at country level. Prior to this position he was the UNAIDS Country Programme Advisor in Cambodia (1998 - 2002) and the Philippines (1996 - 1998). Suman MehtaAssociate Director, Asia, Pacific and Middle East Divsion, UNAIDS Nationality: IndianLanguages: English, HindiAs UNAIDS Director for the Asia, Pacific and Middle East Division, Suman Mehta is responsible for providing policy and programmatic support on AIDS to countries in Asia, Pacific and Middle East and North Africa. Dr Mehta has more than 30 years of professional experience in reproductive health, AIDS, gender and health policy. Prior to joining UNAIDS, Dr Mehta served as the Global AIDS Coordinator at UNFPA. She was instrumental in defining UNFPA’s institutional policy on AIDS and providing strategic guidance to the agency’s work at country level. She is a gynecologist and obstetrician from India. Her professional training includes a Doctorate in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University and a Master’s of Science in Demography and Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Mari OrtegaProgramme Development Adviser, Asia, Pacific and Middle East Division, UNAIDS Nationality: FilipinoLanguages: English, FilipinoMari Ortega is responsible for coordinating Secretariat activities in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, supporting UNAIDS Country Coordinators, Theme Groups, and the UNAIDS Intercountry Team based in Bangkok. These activities include leadership mobilization, partnership development, and resource mobilization. Before joining UNAIDS, he served as the Chief of Staff of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography in the Philippines. He has been given recognition as the "architect" of the Philippine AIDS Law. Mari Ortega is a medical doctor. Luiz LouresAssociate Director, Europe and Americas Division, UNAIDS Nationality: BrazilianLanguages: English, Portuguese, SpanishLuiz Loures is a physician and public health specialist. Before joining UNAIDS in 1996, he worked for Brazil's National AIDS Programme. For over a decade - from the creation of UNAIDS - he was involved in different technical and programmatic aspects of the UNAIDS Programme, ranging from surveillance to care. From 1992 onwards, Dr Loures helped plan and implement a comprehensive national project on AIDS based on a World Bank loan. A graduate of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Dr Loures received his Master’s of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley, and has a specialization in internal medicine and intensive care. Nina FerencicRegional Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and Americas Division, UNAIDS Nationality: Croatian and VenezuelanLanguages: Spanish, English, French, CroatianAfter working as a researcher and teaching assistant on communication and development, Nina Ferencic joined the WHO Global Programme on AIDS as a Communications Research, Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist at the Health Promotion Unit and later at the Department of Research and Intervention Development. She started working at UNAIDS in 1996 where she was part of the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) team working on the development of policies, programmes and partnerships in the region, with particular emphasis on the Caribbean. Ms Ferencic has been involved in various key initiatives, including the establishment of the Pan-Caribbean Partnership against HIV/AIDS. In May 2003 she was appointed Regional Coordinator for the LAC region. Nina Ferencic has degrees in sociology, a Master’s degree in Communications Research and a Doctorate in Communication, Arts and Sciences. Henning MikkelsenEurope Regional Coordinator, Europe and Americas Division, UNAIDS Nationality: DanishLanguages: Danish, English, GermanSince 1996, Henning Mikkelsen has been part of the Europe team in the UNAIDS Secretariat, and is now the Regional Coordinator for the European region. Until 1996, he worked with WHO’s Global Programme on AIDS to help develop national AIDS prevention programmes in Europe, particularly in Central and Eastern European countries and the Newly Independent States. A main area of concentration has been forging institutional relationships with non-governmental and community-based organizations, particularly those representing or reaching out to vulnerable populations including injecting drug users, migrants, ethnic and sexual minorities, and prison populations. With a background in social sciences and working with homeless people, Mr Mikkelsen ran an AIDS helpline and advised the Board of Health’s AIDS Secretariat in his native Denmark from 1986 to 1988. Advocacy, Leadership and Resource MobilizationAchmat DangorDirector, Advocacy, Leadership and Resource Mobilization, UNAIDS Nationality: South AfricanLanguages: English, Afrikaans and DutchAchmat Dangor is UNAIDS’ Director of Advocacy, Leadership and Resource Mobilization. Mr Dangor has headed up a number of development agencies; including the Kagiso Trust which was the first black-led local foundation founded by Desmond Tutu and other community leaders. He was Chief Executive of the Independent Development Trust, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Until recently he was Interim Director of the re-focused World AIDS Campaign, a joint project between UNAIDS and civil society. Over the years he has gained extensive experience in the areas of advocacy, communication, programme development and resource mobilization. He is the author of four novels and two collections of poetry. Leyla AlyanakChief, Advocacy and Campaigns, Advocacy, Leadership and Resource Mobilization, UNAIDS Nationality: Canada, France and TurkeyLanguages: English, French, Spanish, Italian and basic PortugueseLeyla Alyanak is responsible for delivering and supporting the development of advocacy and campaign strategies at global, regional and national levels. She has been a communications and advocacy professional for 27 years, first as a journalist with the Canadian Broadcasting Organization and later as a global environmental advocate in her capacity as Chief of Communications for WWF International. Ms Alyanak has campaigned for years on human rights and social issues and has written several thousand articles and broadcasts, ranging from the war in Lebanon to the Chernobyl accident to AIDS in Africa. Cheryl BauerleCampaigns Coordinator, Advocacy, Leadership and Resource Mobilization, UNAIDS Nationality: AmericanLanguages: EnglishCheryl Bauerle has a decade of experience in public health advocacy, administration and communications. She joined UNAIDS in 2002 as Campaigns Coordinator, primarily focusing on strengthening civil society's involvement in meeting the targets laid out in the UN Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS. Previous experience includes work at the International AIDS Trust, the White House Office of National AIDS Policy and the Carter Presidential Center. Dominique De SantisPress Officer, Advocacy, Leadership and Resource Mobilization, UNAIDS Nationality: Swiss, American and ItalianLanguages: English, French, ItalianDominique De Santis has been working in media and communications at UNAIDS since June 1996. In 1996 and 1997, she worked as Information Officer, promoting the World AIDS Campaign on children and organizing events for World AIDS Day. From 1998 until 1999, Ms De Santis was seconded to UNICEF New York as HIV/AIDS Communication Officer, developing communication activities to promote the World AIDS Campaign with young people. In September 1999, she returned to UNAIDS Geneva as Press Officer to handle all aspects of media relations. Prior to joining UNAIDS, Ms De Santis worked at a public relations firm in Washington, DC. She is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. Abby SpringCommunications Adviser, Advocacy, Leadership and Resource Mobilization, UNAIDS Nationality: AmericanLanguages: English, SpanishAbby Spring has more than a decade of experience in developing and implementing successful international communications campaigns on issues ranging from the environment to development to humanitarian crises. In her role as the US spokesperson for the UN World Food Programme, she helped to mobilize resources and increase awareness of world hunger in Afghanistan, the Balkans, Central America, Mozambique and North Korea. Traveling to emergencies around the globe, she represented WFP on leading television news programmes and in international news articles. Ms Spring’s other work within the UN includes a year as the Deputy Director of Communications for the UN Millennium Development Goals Campaign and as a consultant to UNAIDS. She started her career at the World Wildlife Fund, and has served on US presidential campaigns, produced political television commercials and worked on the staff of Senator Kennedy. Ms Spring is a graduate of Boston University and received a Master’s in International Public Policy from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. Social Mobilization and InformationPurnima ManeDirector, Social Mobilization and Information, UNAIDS Nationality: IndianLanguages: English, French, Hindi, MarathiPurnima Mane is an internationally renowned social scientist whose areas of expertise include gender issues in international health, especially in AIDS. She was Associate Professor at the Tata Institute of Social Studies, where she worked for over twelve years. Ms Mane moved to WHO’s Global Programme on AIDS, in Geneva in 1994 and later to UNAIDS where she pioneered work on gender and AIDS, managed the Executive Office and coordinated the budget and work plan process until 1999. Ms Mane then became Vice President and Director of the International Programs Division at the Population Council in New York. In 2003, she joined the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria as the Chief Fund Portfolio Director and Director, Asia. Ms Mane has co-authored and edited four books including one of the first books on social and cultural aspects of AIDS in India and is a founder-editor of the journal Culture, Health and Sexuality. She received her PhD in women's studies from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, India. Miriam MaluwaLaw and Human Rights Adviser, UNAIDS Nationality: Malawian/BritishLanguages: English, FrenchMiriam Maluwa is a trained and practiced lawyer with a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB Hons) and Master’s of Laws Degree (LLM), from the University of London specializing in International Economic Law. Ms Maluwa has 17 years experience in legal and human rights work - over a decade of experience at both country and international level. Some of her major activities/positions have been: Representative to the UN Commission on Human Rights (Geneva, Switzerland); Coordinator of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights - Plan for Rights of the Child (Geneva Switzerland); Secretary for UNAIDS Ethical Review Committee; Civil litigator and Criminal prosecutor - including undertaking Pro-bono legal cases for abused women and children; Chairperson of the Malawi National AIDS Board; Legal Adviser and Chief Parliamentary Draftsperson to the Malawi Government and Consultant on Legal and Human Rights issues for the European Union, UNDP, British Council, ILO and UNICEF. Miriam Maluwa has served as UNAIDS Law and Human Rights Adviser (Geneva) for the past seven years. Bai BagasaoChief, Partnerships, UNAIDS Nationality: FilipinoLanguage Skills: English and some FrenchBai Bagasao started working at UNAIDS in 1996 as the Programme Development Officer for the Asia and the Pacific Division. In September 2001, Ms Bagasao became Chief of the Partnerships Unit, in the Social Mobilization and Information Department. Prior to joining UNAIDS, She worked for over ten years and headed a health and development NGO that worked with other NGOs, the private sector and governments. She graduated with a Bachelor’s in Science in Social Work and a Master’s in Psychology. Catherine Anita HankinsAssociate Director, Strategic Information and Chief Scientific Advisor to UNAIDS Nationality: CanadianLanguages: English, FrenchCatherine Hankins holds the posts of Associate Director, Strategic Information and Chief Scientific Advisor to UNAIDS in Geneva. She trained in medicine at the University of Calgary and in community medicine at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in England before completing her specialty in Community Medicine. She is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and a member of the Canadian Society of Infectious Disease. Dr Hankins was a member of the Canadian National AIDS Council for eight years, chairing three subcommittees on injection drug use, women, and epidemiology. She led the National Task Force on HIV and Injection Drug Use in Canada. Before joining UNAIDS, she chaired various research peer review committees in the field of AIDS and was a recognised leader in HIV research in Canada with numerous publications. At UNAIDS, she supervises four teams: epidemiology, economics, care, and prevention; coordinates the AIDS technical input into the Global Fund Technical Review Panel; and follows developments in a number of areas, including vaccines and microbicides, scaling up antiretroviral access and effective prevention strategies, estimating resource needs for care, prevention and impact alleviation as well as tracking resource flows for HIV programming in low- and middle-income countries. He has worked with government authorities, NGOs, research and international agencies throughout Bangladesh, India, Iran and Nepal. He was previously based in the UNAIDS Southeast Asia and Pacific Intercountry Team in Bangkok and has worked extensively in China, Indonesia and Myanmar. He also headed the Asia Pacific and Middle East division of UNAIDS Geneva from July 2002 until August 2003. His areas of expertise include HIV prevention programmes for vulnerable populations, rapid assessment of drug use and HIV situation analyses, treatment of drug use, health policy research and public health advocacy. Mr Chatterjee has helped pioneer mental health programmes, developed several pioneering outreach and needle-exchange programmes within Asia, developed guidelines for rapid assessment surveys in drug use and HIV risk and founded a mental health NGO in India. He began his career in community-based health planning in Boston, USA and then served as health planning and management adviser to the Swaziland Ministry of Health through a multilateral international assistance project. After studying and practicing law, Mr Fleet joined the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees where he served in various field and headquarter positions including in the office of the High Commissioner. Since joining UNAIDS in 1998, he has worked on human rights, legal and ethical issues, as well as broader policy issues. He now focuses on access to HIV care and treatment, including intellectual property and trade issues. Mr Fleet has a Bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University, a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Massachusetts, and a Juris Doctor in Law from Northeastern University. From 1992 until 1999, he directed the STD section of Project RETRO-CI, an Abidjan-based AIDS research collaboration of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Côte d'Ivoire's Ministry of Health. Prior to that, Mr Greener worked at the University of Oxford on economic modeling and issues related to food security. His graduate studies were in economic modeling and applied statistics. Aurorita MendozaPrevention and Vulnerability Adviser, UNAIDS Nationality: FilipinoLanguages: EnglishAurorita Mendoza is the Prevention and Vulnerability Adviser at UNAIDS. She has worked in the development field for 33 years serving in various capacities in the academic, NGO, government, and international sectors. Ms Mendoza is an educator in philosophy, with a focus on needs of marginalized groups, especially young people and women. Her work in AIDS has focused on strategy, policy and programme development for AIDS prevention, particularly towards the improvement of access and quality of information and services. Ms Mendoza’s specializations include capacity building, institutional and community mobilization and AIDS education and communication. Françoise Renaud-ThéryCare and Support Network Adviser, UNAIDS Nationality: FrenchLanguages: English, FrenchA public health specialist, Françoise Renaud-Théry is an adviser on scaling up access to HIV and AIDS care, treatment and support. Her functions include promoting strategic information on the AIDS-related pharmaceutical market, price and quality, strengthening partnerships with civil society and encouraging gender equity for access to care and treatment. Before joining UNAIDS, she worked at WHO on medicine policy development for AIDS for three years. She formerly worked for several years as a consultant on AIDS programmes in a large number of countries in Africa and Asia. Ms Renaud-Théry has a doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Bordeaux and a post-graduate diploma in public health. Karen StaneckiSenior Adviser, Demographics and Related Data, UNAIDS Nationality: AmericanLanguages: English, FrenchKaren Stanecki, Senior Adviser on Demographics and Related Data, Department of Social Mobilization and Information, is part of the expert team on epidemiology. She is responsible for making assessments of AIDS-related morbidity and mortality. Ms Stanecki participates in the development of temporal trend data on HIV prevalence by country, region and globally, including historic perspectives, and assists in improving estimates of prevalence, incidence and mortality for orphans, young people and women. In addition, she is currently Chair of the Monitoring the AIDS Pandemic (MAP) Network. She received a Master’s of Public Health in Biostatistics and a Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics from the University of Michigan. Ulf KristofferssonDirector, Security and Humanitarian Response, UNAIDS Nationality: SwedishLanguages: Swedish, Danish, English, French, German and Spanish Ulf Kristoffersson has been with UNAIDS since 2000, where he is currently Director of the UNAIDS Office on AIDS, Security and Humanitarian Response, acting as focal point for integrating and mainstreaming AIDS at all levels of UN peacekeeping Operations and national uniformed services. Mr Kristoffersson worked with UNHCR from 1991 to 1999 as Deputy Director for Africa (1991-1994) and as UNHCR Country Representative in Kenya (1992), Uganda (1994-1996) and Burundi (1997-1999).
