Holiday festival of trains & toys

Baltimore, Maryland – Friday, November 29 at 10:30 a.m., Civil War Santa & Mrs. Claus arrive by rail car to the B&O Railroad Museum historic Roundhouse. The Claus’ will be on-hand throughout the day for photo opportunities and to listen to children wish lists. Opening weekend, November 29-December 1, The Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area LEGO Train Club debuts its incredible LEGO toy operating train layout on the Roundhouse’s 60 foot turntable.
Throughout the entire festival families will also enjoy weekend train rides with Santa and Frosty the Snowman, indoor carousel rides, and fun at “Santa’s North Pole”. Back by popular demand is the exhibit Home for the Holidays where visitors can hear the recordings of Christmas carols by the B&O’s Glee Club, learn about the famous employee decorated Holly Tree, and see historic art and print images of Santa Claus as depicted by noted illustrator Thomas Nast. The Honorable William Donald Schaefer’s antique toy train layout and some of his treasured holiday memorabilia from his childhood and throughout his political life are on exhibit as well.
This year, the festival has a sweet new addition. A team of chocolate history ambassadors from Mars Chocolate North America will share chocolate’s rich journey through time with an interactive chocolate history demonstration – complete with tastings of Mars’ authentic historic chocolate drink, American Heritage Chocolate.
In addition to a new and improved museum’s operating floor level G-scale layout, permanent HO model train layout inside the C&O #725 passenger car, and outdoor garden G-scale layout, visitors will see each weekend a new and different operating train layout created by the following local model railroad clubs throughout the region:
November 29 – January 31: MTH’s (Mikes Train House) O-scale Layout
December 7 & 8: Baltimore Area American Flyer Club S-scale
December 13-15: Washington & Old Dominion Division of the Atlantic Coast S-scale
December 14 & 15: Western Maryland Historical Society HO-Scale Modular Group HO-scale
December 21-29: Baltimore Area NTRAK Club N-scale
December 22-29: National Capital Trackers O-scale
The Museum continues its partnership with the U.S. Marine Corp’s Toys for Tots program. Visitors who bring a new, unwrapped toy to the Museum from November 29– December 15 receive 50% admission. To encourage participation from all visitors, the B&O Railroad Museum Store will offer a 10% off discount on all toys purchased on-site at the Store as a donation to Toys for Tots.
