How could you change the car to make it “amphibious?” (An amphibious car will move both on land and through water.)
Why don’t real cars use rubber bands? What do they use instead?
What happens if you try to start driving a car when it is in 4th gear or try to start moving on a ten-speed bike when the bike is in tenth gear?
Teacher Notes:
A transmission is a device to move motion from one place to another and change the speed and force. A bike’s transmission is in the chain and gears. To get more force, you put the chain on the small gear in front and the large gear in the back. To get more speed, you put the chain on the large gear in front and the small gear in back.
The car we will make has a transmission consisting of a rubber band going around two shafts. One shaft is on the motor and the other is on the wheel. The speed and force of the car depends on the size of the shaft.
