PASTORAL MINISTRY (TRAINING FOR PASTORS) III. Qualifications Following are some essential qualifications of a pastor. 1. You must be certain of your salvation. Like all Christians, a pastor is a forgiven sinner. Consider some scripture that explains the gift of salvation to those who turn from sin and trust in Christ.
"... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (
Romans 3:23 NIV). For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (
Romans 6:23, NIV).
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. Children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God" (
John 1:10-13, NIV) The Apostle Paul wrote of his own salvation.
I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. Even though I was once a blasphemer and
a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me,
the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life" (
I Timothy 1:12-16, NIV)
