JUSTIN D. BECKETT has been training and improving himself as a designer and journalist for much of his life.

Mr. Beckett was professionally trained at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University from 2002 to 2006, obtaining a Bachelor’s of Science in Magazine Journalism while specializing in sociology and music marketing.

In 2006, he began working at The Daily Press and Press Dispatch in Victorville, Calif., as a copy editor. Over a 9-month tenure, he served as A1 designer, Religion Editor and graphic designer while also posting content online, editing photos and video, and designating duties for Sunday production.

In 2007, Mr. Beckett joined the Universal Copy Desk at Cox Media Group. Since then, he has been promoted to Designer IV for CMG Newspaper Shared Services. In this role, he serves as the daily and Sunday front page designer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Dayton Daily News while simultaneously managing production of special sections and supervising in-house digital products.

Further accomplishments include designing high-profile A1s and posters, restructuring the night production process, leading InDesign and work-flow training courses and playing a key role in the research and redesign of CMG’s daily newspapers.

Mr. Beckett also hones his design and leadership skills working as the Director for Creative Design for One United USA. As the membership company for Manchester United in the United States, Mr. Beckett’s work is evaluated by club officials and is closely linked to the successful print and social media marketing of the soccer club in the United States.

Personally, Mr. Beckett is an avid world traveler, soccer supporter and hockey fan. He has studied lived in Adelaide, Australia, where he studied graduate-level sociology and played for his university's hockey team.

Professional experience

Senior Designer, Cox Media Group Newspaper Shared Services May 2007-Present


RESPONSIBILITIES: Mr. Beckett currently serves as the A1 and Projects designer for Cox Media Group Newspaper Shared Services, setting and executing design specifications for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Dayton Daily News, Springfield News-Sun and the Journal-News. Regular responsibilities include:

Design daily, Early Edition and Sunday front pages and other covers for the aforementioned publications.

Set up and execute training for Shared Services staff members on technical implementation of new styles.

Design special sections, including “sweeps” pages, prototypes, posters, high-profile front pages, promotional wrap-around advertisements and graphics.



KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Redesigning 4 daily newspapers; providing training to interns, new hires and existing staff; writing CMG Ohio Style Guide; participate in an APME digital media conference; leading universal newsroom production; serving as A1 designer for the AJC; redesigning the AJC Early Sunday Edition.


Creative Design Director, One United USA August 2010-Present


RESPONSIBILITIES: Mr. Beckett’s job is to create visuals promoting One United USA and Manchester United. Among his designs for the club are:

Web banners for ManUtdUSA.com and computer desktop backgrounds

Facebook photos, GIFs and Twitter, Google+ and Youtube backgrounds, as well as other social media collateral.

8-foot tall banners for yearly NSCAA conference and other club-sponsored events.

Posters advertising membership and exclusive tours.

Cross-promotional creative with Heineken, Fado, World Soccer Shop and ICONS.com.



Designer & Editor, The Daily Press September 2006-May 2007


RESPONSIBILITIES: Mr. Beckett accomplished a great deal in his short tenure at The Daily Press. Among his responsibilities were:

Copy editing and designing A1s, Local, Wire, and Business pages.

Providing software and hardware training to newsroom staff.

Managing the paper’s weekly Religion section.

Creating graphics and skybox promotions.

Editing and optimizing photos and video for print and online.

Assigning pages for the Sunday paper.

Writing occasional columns and reviews.
