Carol Ciotto has been a professor at Central Connecticut State University in the Department of Physical Education and Human Performance for the past 13 years. Prior to CCSU, she spent 22 years serving as a physical education teacher, an assistant principal and a principal in CT. She is the co-founder of PASS (Physically Actively School Systems) and co-author of the book titled, PASS: A Guide Book to Creating Physically Actively School Systems. PASS,is a program by which school districts and schools utilize opportunities for school-based physical activity that enhance overall fitness and cognition, which can be broken down into four integral parts consisting of connecting, communicating, collaborating, and cooperating. There needs to be an understanding of the important connection between mind and body. Making this connection is crucial to the success of the program and, more globally, to have an impact on childhood obesity. In recent years Carol has published several articles and presented at various State, regional, national and international level conferences and is a member of the CT Cadre of Physical Education Trainers.
Carol has served on the CTAHPERD Executive Board as VP for Physical Education and Dance and as President in 2012-2013. She has served the Eastern District as a VP of Physical Activity, a member of the Applied Strategic Planning Committee, Conference program Editor, Advocacy Committee Chair and as the current Eastern District Executive Director.
Carol has received the: 2016 SHAPE America Teacher Educator Honor Award, CCSU Excellence in Teaching Award in 2016 (Semifinalist) and 2010 (Honor Roll), EHPS Superintendent’s Service Award, Connecticut Association of Schools Program Award, CTAHPERD Elementary Teacher of the Year Award and Outstanding Program Award, Hershey’s National Excellence in Teaching and Service Awards and the CIAC Outstanding Coach of the Year Award.
Carol was instrumental in the CT Red Ribbon PASS Program Legislative House Bill (5467) being passed and signed by Governor Daniel Malloy in MAY of 2016. As co-founder of the CT PASS initiative, she is actively engaged in implementing PASS in several Connecticut school systems to help combat childhood obesity and improve learning through movement in her state. Carol has a true passion for teaching and learning and is committed to continuous service to the field of health and physical education.

Dr. Gregory J. Benner is the Helen and Pat O’Sullivan Endowed Professor in the College of Education at the University of Alabama. He has a knack for collective impact—getting whole communities including families, child welfare, mental health, and schools on the same page to meet needs of the whole child. In February 2018, he received the Presidents’ Award from the Northwest PBIS Network for his for outstanding leadership of social and emotional learning and PBIS. He is co-founder of the he Tacoma Whole Child Initiative and led implementation efforts for the first six years of this transformative effort. As Professor and Executive Director of the Center for Strong Schools at the University of Washington – Tacoma, he led sustainable change efforts in many communities.
