Fleet Scoring Rules
1. Background

Cedar Point Yacht Club conducts races for Atlantics according to the CPYC Sailing Instructions. The CPYC Sailing Instructions in section 18 allow the Atlantic Fleet to determine and publish the Atlantic Fleet rules regarding scoring:

“18.1 Each class and the Summer PHRF Series will score races according to their published scoring policies, which describe the method of scoring of individual races, series and the season; the number of races required to be completed to constitute a series; qualification criteria; methods for breaking ties; the scoring of guests; and such other matters as they publish.”
These are the Atlantic Fleet rules regarding scoring of races.
2. Schedule of Races

The official schedule of races is published in the CPYC Yearbook.

3. Guest Skippering

For all races, the boat will be scored, not the skipper. If an Atlantic wants to race and not be scored, then the skipper must indicate this to the Race Committee before the warning signal, either ashore or upon checking in. A boat that races but is not scored does not receive credit toward qualification.

4. Daily Trophies

It is the Club’s policy to recognize the top three finishers each day by awarding a CPYC glass to the top three Atlantics, using low-point scoring. Daily glasses are not awarded on cup weekends.

5. Season Series Trophies

Prizes. The Club awards prizes to the best scoring Atlantics at the Club’s annual awards banquet. The number of finishers to be awarded prizes is approximately 0.4 times the number of qualifiers, e.g., if there are 11 qualifiers, then prizes will be awarded to the top 4 qualifiers for the season. In addition the Club awards qualification mugs to all qualifiers.
Scoring. The season series will be scored using the Low-Point Averaged Scoring System as described in U.S. Sailing’s publication “Scoring a Long Series

Alternative Scoring Systems for Long Series” as referenced in the footnote in Appendix A in the 2005-2008 US SAILING edition of The Racing Rules of Sailing.

Races to Count and Minimum Required. The series will consist of the races as set forth in the Yearbook. To be eligible for season prizes, a boat must participate in 60% of the races completed, including all Cup and non-Cup races. In addition to the credit a boat gets for participating in a race, boats will be given credits that count as participation in one race for qualification and scoring purposes, for the following:
Atlantic Nationals – for participating, four credits;
Race Committee – if the owner or one of the principal skippers serves on Race Committee and the boat does not sail that day, one credit if one race is completed, 2 credits if two races are completed;
Special Situations – the Fleet Captain can grant additional credits or designate other activities as eligible for the grant of credits where doing so will promote sailing or participation in Fleet or Club activities.
Race Scores. Each boat finishing a race and not thereafter retiring or being disqualified will be scored as follows:

Finishing place Score

First 1

Second 2

Third 3

Fourth 4

and so on.

All other boats that compete in that race, including any that finish and thereafter retire or are disqualified, will receive the score for the finishing place one more than the number of boats competing in that race. Boats that do not compete in that race (DNC) will not be scored.
Series Scores. The series score for each boat will be the sum of her race scores divided by the number of races for which she is scored, excluding her throwout score(s), carried to four decimal places. Each race sailed over qualification throws out 1/4 of a race. For example, sailing 5 races over the number required to qualify throws out a boat's worst race and 1/4 of the next worst race. The qualified boat with the lowest series score is the winner, and others are ranked accordingly.
Ties and Other Rules. Race ties will be broken using rule A7. Series ties will be broken using rule A8.1. Rules A1, A3, A5, A6, A10 and A11 also apply.
6. Vice Commodore’s Cup, Commodore’s Cup, and Rear Commodore’s Cup Series Trophies
Prizes. The Club will award prizes to the three top Atlantic finishers in each of the Cup series of races. They will receive a CPYC glass during an awards ceremony on the final day of the series, and a trophy at the Club’s annual awards banquet.
Qualification. Scoring for the Cup weekends will be based on all races completed, except that if at least four scheduled races are completed, then a boat may throw out its worst finish, except that by Club rules a boat may not throw out the race on the day of the picnic if the boat did not race that day. For example, if four races for the Fourth of July weekend are completed and the picnic is scheduled for the final day, i.e. Monday: if you did not race on Saturday but raced on Sunday and Monday, you could throw out your DNC (did not compete) finish for Saturday; if you raced on Monday and it was your worst finish, a 7th, you can throwout that race; if you raced on Saturday and Sunday but not Monday, you could not throwout that DNC.
Scoring. The Cup weekends are scored using the Low-Point scoring method as described in the current USSA Rules if Sailing, including the procedures for dealing with tie scores.

  1. June, July, and August Mini-Series

In order to encourage participation, in addition to the season series scoring and prizes, prizes will be given for the best performance in the monthly June, July, and August races.
Prizes. The three boats with the lowest scores will receive trophies (t-shirts, hats, or glasses) for the skipper and three crew, awarded on the last day of each series.
Schedule. The June series runs from 5/26-6/24; the July Series from 6/30-7/29, and the August series from 8/12-9/3.
Qualification. To qualify, a boat must sail at least 60% of the races completed in each series. Credits will be granted as for the season series.
Scoring. Boats will be scored using Low Point as set forth in Appendix A of the 2005-2008 Racing Rules, counting each boat’s best scores for the number of races equal to 60% of the number of races completed. For example, if 11 races are completed, then each boat will be scored for its best 7 races (11*0.6 = 6.6 which is rounded to 7). If a boat qualifies because of credits and has not raced enough races to have sufficient scores, the credit(s) will be scored using the average of its other scores.
8. William T. Snaith Trophy

The William T. Snaith Trophy is awarded annually at the Club’s awards banquet to the Atlantic skipper that is first overall for the season.

9. Joseph C. Olsen Trophy

The Joseph C. Olsen Trophy is awarded annually at the Club’s awards banquet to the Atlantic skipper who participates in the most Atlantic races, including all club Atlantic races, the Atlantic Nationals, and the Janeway Regatta.
