A2 - Seating Principles for the Child with Cerebral Palsy (0.2 ceu)
Sponsored by: Pacific Rehab Inc.
Mobility devices have a great impact not only on the user, but also their family/caregiver. If the caregiver is prepared correctly, the experience can be positive for all concerned. The system will be accepted with optimism that it will be an aide to improving the child’s abilities, and in many cases, independence. Unfortunately, many times this preparation does not occur, and the system is seen as something chosen by others, which becomes only a greater burden. These choices must be made with the family involved, but also made based on solid principles regarding spasticity, neurodevelopment, skeletal development and muscle weakness when evaluating seating and componentry.
Presented by: Catherine Mulholland OTR/L
Catherine Mulholland OTR, is an Occupational Therapist specializing in seating and positioning of children and Young Adults with severe Central Nervous System Deficits for over 30 years. You pull out your notes and get started!
In this interactive, full day course we will discuss all the components that make up a custom configured seating system. Sponsored By: Sunrise Medical
A therapist’s role has become a key in allowing their patients to receive the best product to meet their needs, but also be covered by their funding source. As insurance companies continue to tighten the rules, the referral's role in funding has become crucial. During this course you will learn about overall coverage criteria for complex rehab mobility systems, the differences in coverage for pediatrics, adults and geriatrics, and what qualifies as good documentation. We will review sample documentation and discuss what tools can be created to improve your process with the limited time you have. When it comes down to it, the more successful your process is, the faster your providers should be able to deliver product to your patient.

C-2 Pediatric Power Mobility: Functional Mobility Solutions for Kids (0.2 ceu)
Sponsored by: Permobil
When is the right time for power mobility? What are the benefits of providing access to power mobility early in a child’s life? This course will address these questions and help the audience understand and articulate a child’s skills and abilities, prior to prescribing a power wheelchair. Pediatric mobility issues can be extremely complex. It is important for members of the rehab team to differentiate between therapeutic mobility and functional mobility with all clients; but it is particularly important in the pediatric population. This session will discuss the various types of mobility assistive equipment (MAE) as they apply to pediatrics. Various wheelchair seat functions will also be explored regarding their effect on a child’s functional performance. Through the use of research and case studies, participants will learn the importance of a thorough subjective evaluation in addition to physical examination to determine the most appropriate mobility device for pediatric clients. Time will also be allotted for audience participation and discussion.
