Computer History
As the years have progressed, human beings have become more and more dependent on computers, because it is easier to type than to write by hand, to “Google” than look through books, to sit down in the comfort of your home than to drive somewhere just to search through several sources, because as technology progresses we are becoming more and more lazy. Of course practicality is also involved and this report will go over several stages in the development of the modern day computers and laptops.
In 1936, German construction engineer, Konrad Zuse created the ZI, a programmable computer that did simple tasks; addition and multiplication. 6 years later, John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry invented the ABC computer, the first computer to have parallel processing and generalized memory. 2 years preceding that, the Harvard Mark 1 was invented by Howard Aiken & Grace Hopper. It used punch codes and was mostly used for gunnery and ballistic calculations for the US navy. In 1946, Eniac was created by John Presper Eckert & John W. Mauchly. Eniac is considered the first digital computer it weighed 30 tons and took up 3000 square feet. The following year, John Bardeen, Walter Brattain & Wiliam Shockley created the transistor, a small chip that served as a brain wire for the circuits of microprocessors that run today’s modern computers. 4 years later, John Presper Eckert & John W. Mauchly, creators of Eniac, worked on a new computer; Uniac. Uniac was used in businesses and to calculate the US population. The year after that, IBM created 701EDPM which wasn’t mass produced but was the first personal computer. John Backus & IBM developed FORTRAN in 1954. FORTRAN, formula translation was the first high level programming. In 1958 the integrated circuit was invented by Jack Kilby & Robert Noyce, and by 1962 nearly every computer had it. 1964 was the year when the mouse was invented by Douglas Engelbart, it was called the mouse because of the tail it has coming out of the back. Intel created microprocessors in 1971 and their 4004 was the first processing unit. 13 years after, Apple Macintosh created a computer ready to move into the homes, GUI also known as Lisa. The following year Bill Gates released Microsoft 1.0. Even though it had many problems, it developed into the most used program.
After 1985 there weren’t any really significant breakthroughs, all that had to be invented, was invented. What proceeded that was the development of otherwise already created ideas and technology. Computers have gone from big bulky boxes, to small thin laptops, no bigger than a textbook. It is obvious that we are dependent on computers and that our dependency will increase as years go by. Whatever new technology awaits us in the future, we will always have the computer.
