Computer Science – Year 7

Your homework this year is making a series of information pages that will go towards making an introductory booklet to computer science at PCS aimed at Year 6 students who might be joining PCS next year.

If you don’t have access to a computer at home, you can use the ones at school – either at homework club or in the library. See your teacher if you are unsure about this.

Task 1

With an adult from home have a look at the PCS website: http://www.phcs.org.uk/ and complete the following.

Outcome	Description
All	Explore the PCS website (if possible with an adult from home). Make a list of things you can find on the website using ICT (e.g word).
Challenge	Explore the PCS website (if possible with an adult from home). Using ICT make a page for your booklet of things that you can find on the website with some thought about design and the audience.

Task 2

Online Safety - Leaflet

You are going to research and produce a page about online safety. Your page should meet the following criteria;

   Use images to make it more exciting for children to read
   

“What is a Computer Scientist?”

You are going to find out about the career of computer scientist. Your information sheet should be made using ICT and include the following;

  Examples of tasks/jobs they might carry out

  What qualifications a computer scientist needs
  
• 
  What personal skills they need
  
• 
  What wages they get (on average)
  
• 
  Pros and Cons of the job
  

You are going to research a computer scientist who overcame adversity in order to be successful in their field.

Suggested computer scientists are; Ada Lovelace, Grace Hopper, Mark Dean, Alan Turing.

Outcome	Description

Write a short paragraph about how they contributed to the field of computer science (i.e. what important thing did they do). Don’t copy and paste. Make a list of skills the person needed in order to achieve what they did and explain why they needed those skills.
Expert	Find out some facts and make a biographical page about your person thinking about suitable presentation that makes your work interesting. How did your person contribute to computer science? What they discover/do? Include references of websites you use. Don’t copy and paste. Make a list of skills the person needed in order to achieve what they did and explain why they needed those skills. Explain life challenges the person would have had to overcome in order to achieve.

Task 5

You are going find an image of a computer and then label it.

You are going to make a table about online dangers that students may face when online. You should research the following:
