Overview
Assistant Professor and professional Instructional Designer with a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, specializing in Computer Applications. Sixteen years of experience in analysis, design, development, evaluation, and validation of instruction for adults in industry, aerospace, and university. Nine years of experience of teaching children in K-12 public schools.
Proven track record in training for industry and aerospace sectors, team leadership, and collaborative projects. Effective and efficient use of technology and instructional strategies for classroom and distributed learning, especially computer-based training, simulations, virtual reality. Research: Currently setting up research programs in primary areas of interest – Instructional Design, Virtual Reality and Simulation. One project involves distance training of robotic mission controllers for trouble-shooting Canada’s Space Station robotic arm (Canadarm2) to explore instructional design issues for virtual reality and simulation in distributed environments. A second project examines training, aptitude and assessment for neurosurgeons operating with a robotic arm. A third project focuses on using 3D construction environments to provide “hands-on” and higher-level learning for teachers and students in distance education.
Also collaborating with Dr. Larry Katz on a “Open Learning with Technologies” project to increase employability for disadvantages adults in different populations, using technology and the Peer Intervention Model. Populations included the Mustard Seed and the Tsuu T’ina First Nations. Data collection is complete. Papers in progress.
Service. Currently on the Editorial Board of the Canadian Journal of Learning and Technology. Serving on the program committee for the Imperial Oil MT3 program and on the ethics review board for Education.

Astronaut Training: Worked with CSA Training, Operations, and Engineering to produce front-end analysis documents for astronauts operating Canada’s Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM). Responsibilities included:

Reviewing and revising the Occupational Specification, Course Training Standard and Target Population Report for astronauts operating the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM).

MSS Mission Controller Training: Worked with CSA Training, Operations, and Engineering to produce the Course Training Plan or training blueprint for Canadian and NASA Mission Controllers who plan and monitor operations which involve the Mobile Base System (MBS). The training plan includes options for distance delivery (synchronous) of the course.
Other Tasks: Produced training reports for the Canadian Space Agency regarding Payload Operations, the Space Vision System, and the training requirements for the first SSRMS operation (initialization, activation, and deployment).
Certificate of Distinction awarded for role played in training as part of Canada’s contribution to the International Space Station program.

Involved in the design, development and update of web-based CBT for the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (Canadarm), an instructional package to be used by astronauts, NASA flight controllers, and engineers. As Instructional Design Lead for the project, coordinated the efforts of a programmer and a team of instructional designers to work collaboratively with the subject matter experts and graphic artists at MacDonald Dettwiler Space and Advanced Robotics Ltd.
