Black Voices: The Hidden Bruises Set for the Stage

at Clark Atlanta University March 26-30

ATLANTA (March 10, 2009)The Clark Atlanta University Department of English

and The Urban Theatre Company of Atlanta, Inc. will present Black Voices: The Hidden Bruises from March 26 through March 30 in Davage Auditorium in Haven-Warren Hall on the campus of CAU. Exploring the psyche and resilience of African-American children, the play tells their stories through song, dance and drama.

Black Voices: The Hidden Bruises is a new work, the third and final installment in a trilogy, written by CAU English professor Willie L. Todd Jr. The first two segments of Black Voices received much acclaim and were respectively one of only three college or university productions invited to the 2003 and 2005 National Black Theatre Festivals, held in Winston-Salem, N.C.

“We are quite excited about what this rendition should mean to our audiences,” said Todd. “As a new work, we are eager to share this with our Atlanta supporters. In fact, the show came together under a workshop formula where actors actually helped to shape their roles. We feel there is a reality about the faces and facades that make up these characters, their hopes, fears and dreams.”

Todd said that this show was an extremely personal and cathartic experience. “It was surely a difficult task to capture the joys, triumphs, trials and tribulations experienced by many African-American children,” he said. “Additionally, it was not a simple task to determine what childhood stories and reflections should be told on stage.”

Dr. A. Clifton Myles, director of the production, adds, “The play is a symphony of beautiful language, emotion-filled dances and a celebration of the resilience of African-American children that will leave you wanting more.”

Dr. Alma Vinyard, chair of the Department of English, commented, “We were so pleased with the theatrical and financial success of the first two productions that we quickly embraced the concept for the third production. The subject matter helps to fill a void not just in African-American literature, but American literature as well. These vignettes also provide the impetus for further classroom discussion, literary research and literary criticism.”

Renowned choreographer Nykki Burkes is back with a few former cast members in this all new production. Partial proceeds will support scholarships and future projects within the CAU English Department. Due to adult themes, the production is for mature audiences only and youths 13 and up.

The show times are: Thursday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, March 28, at 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, March 29, at 6:00 p.m.; and Monday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m. The tickets are $7 in advance for Atlanta University Center (AUC) students with I.D. ($10 at the door) and $12 for non-AUC students and general admission ($15 at the door). Tickets are available in the CAU English Department and the CAU Bookstore.
