2011 Mid-Atlantic Open

Anytime Fitness * Hagerstown, Maryland

He is Risen!

The 2011 Mid-Atlantic Open, now in its fourth year, saw many new, quality lifters join the R.A.W. United ranks in our support of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces!

Four benchers joined the full power competitors this year and did not disappoint! Candy Ramsburg nailed a 95 pound record bench in the 60-64, 181s to start things off. Teammates Nick Mercorelli (198s), Jason Rovey (242s), and Scott Kuzma (275s) pushed incredible weight, with Nick registering the strongest bench at nearly 2.2 times his bodyweight. More important, Nick, Jason, and Scott made a $100.00 donation to Wounded Warrior Project, assisting severely injured service members returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq; thanks!

Alicia Stoll, lifting in her first meet, set the squat, dealdlift, and total record in her class. Alicia recently lost over fifty pounds, and has transformed her life through our great sport. And she had the quote of the day: “If you’re not squatting and deadlifting, you’re not training!”

Grant Zalud (IRONMAN) of Ashburn, Virginia and David Young (RAW) of Hyattsville, Maryland led the men’s charge, capturing Best Lifter honors in their respective divisions. Grant set record lifts of 500, 335, and 600 in the 25-29, 198s; David did the same, going 525, 375, and 545 to post the meet’s biggest total at 1445 pounds. Paul Griffith, celebrating his 50th year in competitive powerlifting, went 325, 170, and 350 in the 65-69,148s. Paul’s lifts were good for new Master records, and he continues to display flawless form on the platform. Seventeen year old Brandon Mose of XXX, XXX was truly inspirational, igniting the crowd with lifts of 360, 300, and 405. Brandon’s squat, bench, and total broke the existing teenage records, proving this young man has a great future in raw powerlifting! Finally, Glenn Finley of Baltimore, Maryland registered the first 12 for 12 day I have witnessed as a contest director! Competing in the 40-44, 275s, Glenn hit lifts of 505, 365, and 575 for his impressive 1465 pound total. Calling for fourth attempts in each lift to break existing R.A.W. United records, Glenn successfully nailed a 525 squat, a 385 bench, and 600 deadlift to finish his day. As a powerlifter, you really can’t ask for more … except maybe a pain-free body on Sunday!
