Demonstrate basic operations of alphasmart: turning it on/off, where batteries are housed and how to determine how much charge is left on batteries.

Describe how text is saved automatically and that there are 8 files for saving material.

Demo the clear file, home, end, find and spell check buttons

Demo how to connect alphasmart to computer with USB cord to send text from alphasmart to computer word processing program to continue with editing and get document ready for printing.

Give explanation of CoWriter applet –word prediction program.

Demo how Cowriter applet is selected, how to “tab” between
basic word processing and cowriter applet. Reminder that spell check doesn’t work when co-writer applet is running.

Staff will each have an alphasmart or share one with a partner in order for them to get hands on experience. Staff will try out different features of alphasmart. Alphasmart user’s guides and alphasmart QuickStart guides will be distributed and reviewed.
Avermedia document camera and projector will be used so staff can view demonstration of device.
Laptop will be connected to projector so staff can view information being sent from alphasmart file to computer’s word processing program.
Document camera along with projector will be used so staff can view demonstration of CoWriter applet
Question staff on how they think CoWriter would be a useful tool for students.
After demo of each step, the staff will use the alphasmart to familiarize themselves with the device and the feature being demonstrated.

Each content area teacher would potentially have different types of written material. Staff will provide example of written work that could be a product of their class using the alphasmart.

Staff will use alphasmart and type an example of written work they might have in their class. They would also use the different features of the alphasmart and try the cowriter applet.

Teachers will review different features of the alphasmart
Teachers will view video created using document camera that demonstrates how to use the alphasmart.

Teachers will identify the functions of the keys of the alphasmart and refer to Quickstart Guides as needed,
Teachers will be directed to Assistive Technology site on portal and to video resource featuring CoWriter applet. They will be able to access this video if they need a reminder on how to use it along with Quick Start guides.
