Proper Use of Trademarks

Registered trademarks and common law trademarks must be properly designated and properly used to maintain the rights in and the legal status of the trademarks. When using any DS SolidWorks trademark, please observe the following guidelines:

  1. Always follow the first or most prominent use of a trademark with a trademark designation in a legible superscripted font. If a trademark is registered,

If the trademark is not registered, the designation that follows the mark depends on the type of mark:

  • Use the designation SM for a non-registered service mark.

  • Use the designation TM for a non-registered mark that identifies and distinguishes a good (e.g., software delivered on a CD such as COSMOSXpressTM software).

Note that if sections of a document are likely to be distributed separate from the entire document, use the trademark designation in each such section.

  1. A trademark should always be used as an adjective that modifies that which it identifies and never used as a noun (e.g., “There are thousands of users of SOLIDWORKS® software”; not “There are thousands of users of SOLIDWORKS® ” or “There are thousand of SOLIDWORKS® users”).

  2. A false impression must not be given with regards to the affiliation of DS SolidWorks and another company or organization. When a party other than DS SolidWorks uses a DS SolidWorks trademark or logo, that party’s trademark, trade name, or logo should be more prominent than the DS SolidWorks trademark or logo.

  3. A trademark should always be highlighted to distinguish the mark from other words. For example, you may highlight a trademark by displaying the mark in upper case characters, within quotes, or in italic or bold character fonts.

  4. Always use the trademark in its proper form. For example, do not transform a trademark into a singular, plural, or possessive form if the mark was not registered in that form.

  5. The use of a trademark should never confuse people about the source of the trademark. Furthermore, trademarks should be attributed to the owner of the mark. For example, the following sentence notifies people that the SolidWorks trademark is owned by DS SolidWorks:

SolidWorks® is a registered trademark of Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corp.

  1. A DS SolidWorks logo that also functions as a trademark should not be used without permission.

  2. When displaying a DS SolidWorks logo, the aspect ratio (relative width and length) of the logo must be preserved and the design should not be changed from that which is registered. Certain changes may be considered immaterial; however, that determination should be made by a legal counsel.

If you have any questions relating to the permission to use a DS SolidWorks trademark, the current list of DS SolidWorks trademarks, or the proper usage of any DS SolidWorks trademark, please contact info@SolidWorks.com.
