Introduction:
This documentation provides basic information on the files created as part of a project to map the Constellation Program “Region of Interest” site, known as Tsiolkovskiy. The primary products produced as part of this mapping effort includes a digital elevation model (DEM) of the site, at 3 meters post spacing, covering an area of at least 40 x 40 km at the Constellation designated site. The mapped area lies in Tsiolkovskiy crater.

The source data for this mapping are scans of the original Apollo flight film being performed by Johnson Space Center and Arizona State University's School of Earth and Space Exploration. For more information on the scanning process see http://apollo.sese.asu.edu/.
The images used for to create a digital elevation model (DEM) of this area were AS15_P_8973-0007, AS15_P_8973-0008, AS15_P_8975-0007, AS15_P_8975-0008, AS15_P_8976-0007, AS15_P_8976-0008, AS15_P_8977-0007, AS15_P_8977-0008, AS15_P_8978-0007, AS15_P_8978-0008, AS15_P_8980-0007, AS15_P_8980-0008, AS15_P_8982-0007, and AS15_P_8982-0008. An Apollo Panoramic image is 45.24 by 4.5 inches (1,149 x 114.3 mm) (see http://history.nasa.gov/afj/simbaycam/itek-pan-camera.htm for more information on the panoramic camera.) Due to the length of the film each panoramic image was scanned in 8 segments. The images used are from the 7th and 8th segment so they are 31.5° to 54° off to the side of the spacecraft. The expected precision of the elevation data is from 0.6 to 1.2 m.
Images AS15_P_8973-0007, AS15_P_8973-0008, AS15_P_8975-0008, AS15_P_8977-0008, and AS15_P_8982-0007 were combined with the DEM data to create the orthomosaic. A dynamic range adjustment was used to balance the grey scale values in the two images. This did not completely work so there is some imbalance between the two images. This is an area of improvement that needs to be worked on.

./Tsiolkovskiy/FIGURES.zip – These files are figures that illustrate the data being provided. They are provided at a reduced resolution so they are not zipped and can be viewed directly.
Tsiolkovskiy_layout_small.jpg - This figure provide an overview of the area using color coded elevation data combined with a hill shaded relief image of the elevation data. The longitude coordinates are shown with an east designation.
Tsiolkovskiy_3Dview.jpg - This image is a 3-d view of the color coded elevation data combined with a hill shaded relief image of the elevation data. The elevation data was exaggerated 2 times to bring out the relief.
DEM_40m_Apollo_pan_Tsiolkovskiy_color_hillshade.jpg - This image is an orthographic view of the color coded elevation data combined with a hill shaded relief image of the elevation data.
Tsiolkovskiy_color_lut.tif - This image depicts the color look up table used to color code the topographic data.
Tsiolkovskiy_dra_50m_o.jpg - This is a reduced resolution orthographic mosaic of Tsiolkovskiy. Each pixel is about 50 m of ground space.
DEM_50m_Apollo_pan_Tsiolkovskiy_hillshade_MWOD.jpg - This is a reduced resolution hillshaded image and was created using the DEM and the multi-directional oblique (MDOW) hill shade method developed by Dr. Marks of the USGS.
./Tsiolkovskiy/GIS.zip - these files are compatible with GIS software and are in JPEG 2000 format with lossless compression or in tiff format for files that needed 32 bit format data.
Tsiolkovskiy_dra_1p5m_o.jp2 - Orthomosaic with a resolution of 1.5 m per pixel, this is the approximate scale of the original images. The image format is lossless JPEG 2000. header_Tsiolkovskiy_dra_1p5m_o.txt contains the header information about projection, and geographic coverage.
Tsiolkovskiy_dra_5m_o.jp2 - Orthomosaic with a resolution of 5 m per pixel, this is the same scale of the elevation data. The image format is lossless JPEG 2000. header_Tsiolkovskiy_dra_5m_o.txt contains the header information about projection, and geographic coverage.
DEM_5m_Apollo_pan_Tsiolkovskiy.tif - Elevation data in 32 bit format with a resolution of 5 m per pixel. DEM_5m_Apollo_pan_Tsiolkovskiy.aux contains projection information and is used by some GIS programs. header_DEM_5m_Apollo_pan_Tsiolkovskiy.txt contains the header information about projection, and geographic coverage.
./Tsiolkovskiy_1/ISIS.zip - files compatible with Integrated Software for Imagers and Spectrometers (ISIS), created and managed by the USGS Astrogeology Research Program.
Tsiolkovskiy_150cm_8b_o.cub - Orthomosaic with a resolution of 1.5 m per pixel, this is the same scale of the elevation data. header_Tsiolkovskiy_150cm_8b_o_ISIS_label.txt contains the header information about projection, and geographic coverage.
Tsiolkovskiy_5m_8b_o.cub - Orthomosaic with a resolution of 5 m per pixel, this is the same scale of the elevation data. header_Tsiolkovskiy_5m_o_ISIS_label.txt contains the header information about projection, and geographic coverage.
Tsiolkovskiy_DEM_5m.cub - Elevation data in 32 bit format. header_Tsiolkovskiy_DEM_5m_ISIS_label.txt contains the header information about projection, and geographic coverage.

./Tsiolkovskiy/DATA_QUALITY.zip - these files provide information about the data quality. Currently, two versions of the full resolution hillshaded DEM are provided. In the future we will place in a figure of merit map that shows where areas were edited and were data is from image correlation.
sm_1_7_MHmerge_edit_final_tsr.tif - This is a hillshaded relief image produced by SOCET SET and shows the areas that were edited, primarily because these areas were in shadow in one or both of the stereo pair images. Smooth areas are where the data was edited. There are also linear features from seams and correlator artifacts. Usually these errors are below or near the precision of the data, for Tsiolkovskiy the precision is about 0.6 to 1.2 m.


DEM_5m_Apollo_pan_Tsilokovskiy_hillshade.jpg - This is a full resolution hillshaded image and was created using the DEM and the multi-directional oblique (MDOW) hill shade method developed by Dr. Marks of the USGS.
