Endurance Athlete to Swim Across the Atlantic Ocean

Historic 90-Day Swim to be Broadcast LIVE on Facebook
London, England, July 15, 2014 With sharks, jellyfish, huge waves, strong riptides, and cold temperatures, taking a swim in the ocean can be a scary experience. Luckily, for most, the shore is always close by. When Ben Hooper enters the salt water for “Swim the Big Blue,” that shore will be a whopping and frightening 2,000 miles away as he looks to become the first man in history to swim the full extent of the Atlantic Ocean.
“It is an extremely difficult and daunting task when I stop and think about it, but I have been training extremely hard and I have a great support group of family, friends, and professionals around me, so I am excited and confident we can do this,” said Hooper.
Born in London, England, Hooper started swimming when he was 5 and first competed in long-distance swim events as a teenager. As he grew older, he stepped it up to triathlons and longer open-water ocean and river swims.
Now, as an adult, and father of a 5-year-old daughter, that focus is clearly on his family and training for his amazing three-month long Big Blue Swim.
“I really have to thank all my supporters. Without them I wouldn’t have this great opportunity,” Hooper added. “It is important to remember this is for my charities: SOS Children’s Villages, Maggie’s Cancer Care Centres and AddAction. Always remember to dream, live, and achieve - nothing is impossible. Together we will make history.”

Hooper’s epic stage swim, will chart a course from Dakar, Senegal to Natal, Northern Brazil across the open Mid-South Atlantic Ocean. Using freestyle swimming, he will swim up to 12 hours per day. Between his two six-hour swim sessions, he will take two hours of rest on a support boat. He will also sleep on the boat at night. Each time he exits the water, neutral observers will GPS the position and any controlled drift during rest will be added back into the swim distance to ensure every, single mile is truly swum.

Also, the incredible 2,000-mile journey will be LIVE on Facebook. Thanks to the innovative new software SmackDab, which allows live events and pre-recorded video to be broadcast in full-screen HD mode within the number one social media website in the world, all 1.6 billion users of Facebook will have the opportunity to watch every stroke, kick, huge wave, lightning storm, jellyfish, flying fish, and shark fin as it happens.
After 90 days, come January 2016, Hooper hopes to be the first person to cross any of the world’s oceans as he successfully swims from Africa to South America – and straight into the history books.
