Everything you need to know about monthly entries How many photos can you enter?

You can enter up to 5 photos for judging at each club evening:

1 of the photos must be within the set subject category. See our Club info

for the list of set subjects.

The other 4 photos must be either Color , Monochrome or Altered

Reality/Visual Art but not more than 2 entries are allowed per category.

  JPG file format.
  

• 
  It is recommended that the submitted images be saved in the sRGB colour space.
  
• 
  No wording or text may be added to images.
  

If it is a portrait photo, the vertical side may be no longer than 768 pixels.

We have a seperate document available that explains how to save your photographs with these settings. The settings are the same as is required to enter a salon so it will be very good for you to learn to save your masterpieces in the correct way!

We ask you to enter a week before each club evening via email. There are clear directions on our website on how to enter via our EMMA system

  A colour photo is defined as a photo having more than two colours.
  
• 
  Any subject is acceptable and the photo may have a frame / border
  
• 
  The photo may be manipulated as long as it is not visible manipulation or altered reality.

  Techniques such as HDR and Orton are acceptable as long as it is subtle and does not transforms the photo into a visual art/altered reality picture.

  It must be a black-and-white or a sepia photograph.

There are a lot of confusion between “Altered Reality” and “Manipulation”. In this category you have the opportunity to manipulate your photo in order to alter the reality of the object you photographed.

  Altered reality may be defined as the creative use of any technique to alter the recorded image in a way that simulates or produces an artistic representation.
  
• 
  An image in which the photographic truth has been altered would fit into this category.
  
• 
  In this section, manipulation is the key to a successful image.
  
• 
  The original image must have been captured by a camera and the author must be the responsible person for the image as well as the manipulation.
  
• 
  The photo may have a frame / border as the photo stays within the size limits.
  
• 
  Any subject can be covered.
  
• 
  The photo must be visibly manipulated or the subject must be something that can be seen as visual art.
  
• 
  The photo may be in colour, monochrome or a combination of both.
  
• 
  Visual Art falls within this category and there are no limits on manipulation.
  
• 
  Each element that you add to the photo must have been created by the photographer himself.

Give your image a name !!

Each of the photos you enter into a salon or club evening need to have a name. You can choose any name but once you decided on it, it needs to stay the same forever. (How would you feel if your name has to change 3 times a year?) Be creative with choosing a name and keep the following in mind:

• 
  Do not make your name too long as you will be restricted with the amount of characters you can use when entering your image into a salon.
  
• 
  If you have a photo of your cat, do not just call the picture “cat”. Rather try to come up with something creative. What do you want to say with your photo or what do you want to focus on? Is there a story to be told with your photo . . . Be creative!
  
• 
  Make sure not to have 2 pictures in your gallery with the same names. This will lead to endless confusion and as you are only allowed to enter a picture into the club once, this might restrict you.
  

The point that you receive for your “set subject” photo will be allocated to either the colour, mono or altered section in your point document.

According to the PSSA standards you are allowed to do the following to any of your pictures. They do not see these as manipulation:

  Removal of dust or scratch marks
  
• 
  Adjustments to exposure and contrast (within limits)
  
• 
  Dodging and Burning
  
• 
  Adjustment of colour balance & non-selective colour saturation (including the adding of filters)
  
• 
  Reduction of noise
  
• 
  Sharpening
  
• 
  Crop and resize

You can manipulate any of the photos that you enter for our monthly club evenings but you must remember that manipulation limits you in using that photo for future competitions.

Should you choose to manipulate your Colour and Monochrome photos, it must be done in a way that we cannot see it, otherwise it becomes an Altered Reality photo. You can therefore “clone” in a Colour or Mono photo, but it must be done sooo good that it should seem as part of the photo.

You could go mad in the Altered Reality/Visual Art category and let your imagination run wild to create a picture that could also be seen as visual art.
