Barra da Tijuca is a well-known neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro and is the fastest growing county in the city. It is located on the western side of the city by the Atlantic coast. The area has wonderful beaches, lakes and rivers which attract wealthy residents and tourists. It houses 4.7% of Rio de Janeiro’s population. Barra da Tijuca is one of the most developed places in Brazil. It is a modern region of the city, built only thirty years ago to a very high standard. It has many attractive green spaces, shopping centres, luxury homes, and company headquarters. The neighborhood is thought of as a city ‘hub’ and economic, cultural and administrative centre. It is considered the safest of Rio de Janeiro’s upper class neighborhoods, and is home to many celebrities. Barra will host most of the venues of the 2016 Summer Olympics; the first held in South America.
