Those books published in (2005) have the copyright date in bold red font. A Replies & Comment section with additional information about the books and authors is below the list. We need biographical information on the authors....please. When they were hired and retired if applicable, where they were based, web sites, which airline originally, email addresses for those I don't have, et cetera.
This list is a work in progress and your help is needed. Please send me the names of other Delta Pilots who have authored and published books and the titles of their books.

Nolan’s book is an engaging history of Delta and its people. His focus is the company’s 7 CEOs and the Board of Directors. In the book, he shows how the values and decisions of each one have impacted thousands of people for good or ill. His extensive research included in-depth interviews with 59 members of the “Delta family”; analysis of Delta annual reports and financial statements since its founding in 1929; dozens of media sources over the last 20 years. The book answers the questions about how Delta became successful; what caused the company’s decline; what Delta needs to do to emerge successfully from bankruptcy.
Bookwire Review – “At its core…a story of human drama and shocking corporate malfeasance…” “Nolan’s writing is refreshingly candid and unrestrained.”

BOOKS BY DELTA PILOT AUTHORS --- REPLIES & COMMENTS
Thanks to each of you for your contribution. I have included more than just the title in these replies as I think it is helpful. If you have an email address or web site for any of these authors or books, please send it to me to include with this list. Dave

Anderson, John Aubrey
- The book is titled Black Or White, (Broadman and Holman, 2005) I would classify it as Christian suspense. The catalog tag line reads, "On the shores of Cat Lake, in the midst of the most defined era of segregation in American history, a spitfire seven-year old white girl and spiritual eleven-year-old black boy live each day as best friends. Despite the idyllic scenery and their youthful innocence, forces of darkness trouble the girl and ultimately lead these children to make choices you will never forget. Author John Aubrey Anderson weaves a gripping tale of warmth, humor, and profound eternal truth."
- The next in the series is scheduled to be out in January of 2006. John A.

Barr, James
I know of a book (non-fiction) about using airborne weather radar written by Delta Captain James Barr. I don't know where Jim is flying now but he is an active DAL pilot and either a line check airman or instructor or both. I believe you can obtain a copy of his book through Sporty's.

Bennett, Paul
I'd like to help promote another book, one by Capt. Paul Bennett, Retired. He has written about his experiences in flying and the planes he's known. Many of his friends in flying will find themselves in there. The book is: Flying, A Look Back, by Captain Paul Bennett. It is hard cover and well illustrated.

Crum, John
The title was "Unfriendly Skies" by Capt "X" and Reynolds Dodson, published by Doubleday.
One comes to mind right away. "Captain X" by John Crum. Delta told him there could be no reference to the company or himself but he took it on an extensive promotion anyway. (Today Show et al ) He was a rough and tumble kind of guy. Former Army paratrooper. Retired in 98 as an MD-11 Check Airman. As I recall , John had broken many bones in his body when his skydiving chute streamed and he did the writing while he was off for about a year. After he retired, he joined Dave Greenberg at Korean Air trying to bring some respectability to their ops and Park City was his home base.

Fay, Gerald W. From a -3 to a -10
Gerald W. Fay - Captain, Pacific Northern Airlines, Western Airlines, wrote a book about the airline industry, titled "From a -3 to a -10". Gerry passed away in the mid-eighties.
Here's a review from Amazon.com written by Gerald Fay's son:
Flying Boat Era in World War 2, September 22, 2005
Reviewer: P. M. Fay "Pat Fay" (Seattle, WA USA)
My father used to tell me his war day flying stories when I was a teenager back in the late 1960's. I kept encouraging him to write a book because his war experiences flying in the South Pacific in the flying boats was unique. I knew history when I heard it.
This book would better be titled, "From a DC-3 to a DC-10. The flying career of Jerry Fay". Born in 1920 and a pilot at 16 years of age in 1936 made him the perfect age to experience World War 2. He writes an excellent historical document of what it was like to be a flight engineer on flying machines that needed his skills as a mechanic to keep those machines in the air. He writes of maintaining engines while in flight!
Not just World War 2 experiences will you find here. He tells of flying the AT6, Stearman, Ryans, DC-3's, Constellation, the 720, 727, and DC-10 among others. His descriptions of the early days of flying in Alaska are excellent. It is amazing to read the descriptions of those early days in Alaska.
This book, from a -3 to a -10 is an historical document of the pilots and their flying machines from 1936 to 1985. Pat Fay

Ferrell, Mallory Hope
Mallory Hope Ferrell......Mal Ferrell, an ex-Western guy, wrote many railroad related books which some of our guys might be interested in....He lives/lived in PTC.....maybe someone else can give you more details, but they were really good books and widely distributed......
Mallory Hope Ferrell is the author of numerous books and articles exploring the history of US railroads-with a focus on narrow-gauge railroads like the EBT. A noted photographer himself, Mal has also amassed a personal collection of over 100,000 railroad photos and negatives. This collection has served as the basis for many articles published in railroad and model railroad magazines as well as 15 books. Mal started a career as a professional photographer, but after service as an Air Force pilot in Vietnam he became a commercial airline pilot-pursuing his interests in railroads and photography as avocations.

If I may please present my first work available to the public, {"REVERIE" A Kaleidoscope of the Prose and Poetry in My Life, by C.D. Hurley}, by offering the following websites to obtain copies. www.publishamerica.com (or) www.amazon.com (or) barnesandnoble.com
It has been released by PublishAmerica, a New York Times Partner. Calls for orders are accepted by Barnes and Noble or any bookstore that uses Ingram, Baker and Taylor, or Brodart as their distributor.
I would love to give everyone that has asked for one a copy but it gets forbidding.
My previous works have been Army and Air Force Flight Training curriculum and "true sailing adventures" and "sail handling guides" for various sailing and maritime interest magazines.
Reverie means "fanciful dreaming of agreeable things". If you like light prose and easy poetry, humorous, whimsical and life-based thoughts, all written from the heart, then I believe you will like this book.
My highest regards and appreciation goes to you and to all my fellow pilots and ground employees, active and retired, who made Delta great and my career wonderful!

My latest book God's Guarantees for Giving challenges traditional Christian teaching on tithing and prosperity preaching. In God s Guarantees for Giving I reveal biblical answers to all of the giving questions. I also list 27 statements one should consider before writing another tithing check. You may be shocked at the TRUTH revealed in this study. In my research I uncover hidden biblical truths that are not often taught. Many sincere Christians are unknowingly limiting their potential blessings by obeying the commands of man. This book is to challenge all, pastors and laymen alike, to obey God's Handbook and they will be guaranteed a financial blessing. Check out my testimony by obeying the Handbook at www.godsguarantees.com . This book made the top 20 Christian publishing list the second month it was on the market. Many have reordered scores of copies after the first reading. Retail is $15.00 on the net. Delta discount is $10.00, including postage from ronknott1@msn.com It can be ordered from Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com, Wal-Mart.com and many other web sites. My other sites are www.ronknottrealestate.com. Thanks. Ron Knott, Retired 767 Captain DFW

Hi David,
I have a new book that has been in print for just over two weeks. Here is the web site that explains what the book is about. Please take a look and pass the web site along if you feel it is worthwhile. I have been getting very favorable reports back from those who have read the book. There have been at least four people who have read the book and ordered ten or more copies for gifts. Thanks for taking a look at this site. I appreciate all the work you do. I have received orders from Miami, Florida to Hawaii. I already have one offer to translate the book into Japanese.

From: David L. Roberts Thanks Charlie. Are you active or retired and if retired are you still flying anything? Are your books still available and if so where can they be purchased? Do you have a web site?
Hi Dave,
Sorry, I don't have a website! I retired from Delta in 2002 just before I turned 60 due to a (fortunately) non-aggressive form of stomach cancer. After a year in remission (I get another Big Checkup next month), the Marine Corps involuntarily ordered me back to active duty in March 2003 at age 61 to serve in Kuwait and Iraq as Senior Field Historian for Aviation. I wasn't in a flight status, and they took me warts and all. I'm apparently the only aviator-historian the Marines have had in many years. I think I also may have been the only Marine Vietnam vet over there. Anyway, I recently got my medical so I am happily flying our 1953 radial-engine tailwheel Cessna 195 plus Roscoe Diehl's C-45 and T-28 again. The 195 is ideal for a former fighter guy and airline captain: it humbles me on every landing!
The books are monographs; i.e. -- official critical histories rather than coffee-table items -- that I wrote as Marine historian. (I didn't get any money for them). I believe the VMFA-531 history is in print via the Government Printing Office. It's a history of the Marines' pioneer night-fighter unit and traces the development of all-weather/ nightfighting up through the 1990s. The Desert Storm book is an overall history of Marines in that conflict. You can probably find a copy through Bookfinder.com. I'm working on another about Marine aviation in Operation Iraqi Freedom at the moment.
My best to all retirees out there, and thanks for your good work on our behalf. Hope they have more free time than I do!
Charlie Quilter
PS:
I retired in Sept 1994 after nearly 35 years of service. (I enlisted in the USMCR at age 17, an age when I was sure I knew all that there was to know). I got to see most of the "garden spots" that the USMC deploys to starting with the Dominican Republic Crisis of 1965-66, Vietnam 1966-68, Desert Storm 1990-91, Bosnia in 1994 and lastly OIF. My orders this time read "involuntary," but I wasn't stunned. They asked for my help, so I went. I suppose I could have balked, but the Marine Corps has been good to me so I accepted and did what I could over there. The living wasn't fancy -- tents in the sand and some really unpleasant temps up into the 120s during the summer with talcum-like blowing dust. The food was surprisingly good, both new-style MREs and field messing. The few times the Iraqis fired in my vicinity -- always from a long distance -- they missed, so it wasn't so bad compared to Vietnam or Desert Storm. And you're right, it does make the writing of history easier when you have some personal perspective. Re cancer, I'm feeling OK, and the people at City of Hope National Medical Center are tops if something comes back. You just have to take that a day at a time. Meantime: Carpe diem!

China Diaries A fast moving story of war, love, betrayals and cabaret life against a background of pioneering aviation in 1930 pre-war China.
"This is historical fiction the way it ought to be. The characters are believable, the flying scenes accurate to the finest detail, the tragedy of WWII evoked with honest, clear-eyed realism. Best of all, China Diaries just happens to be a cracking good story," says Robert Gandt, Aviation author of China Clipper and Acts of Vengeance.

And from Ed....28 Jan 2004 There was a first edition in 1991 (20,000 copies) and a second printing a couple years later. I have not heard anything from the publisher since the mid-nineties so I believe it may be out of print -- except for used copies. Someday, I may get around to updating the content ........ Stevens, Bob
Alaskan Aviation History, 1897-1930, November 17, 2000
Reviewer: Bob Stevens from Seattle, WA USA
My father wrote this two-volume set over 15 years of painstaking research, resulting in 1095 pages with 59 chapters and 980 photographs, most never before published and lovingly restored from private collections and personal albums of the great bush pilots and long-established Alaskan families. His own love affair with Alaska began in July, 1946 as a young DC-3 copilot for Pacific Northern Airlines based in Anchorage and continued through his retirement as a senior DC-10 captain for Western Airlines in May, 1978. 32 years of commercial flying as well as crisscrossing every corner of Alaska in small planes, float-flying to nameless lakes for hunting and fishing, he came to see much of Alaska's rich aviation heritage was in danger of slipping into oblivion.
Volume I traces the story from early ballooning in 1897, through 1928. Volume II covers the busy times of 1929 and 1930. This set covers civil, commercial and military aviation throughout Alaska, including Russian and Scandinavian trans-polar expeditions. Follow the day to day progress of events along with the more sensational occurrences and hundreds of other fascinating facts, meticulously researched from personal journals and newspaper archives of the time; clearly presented first-hand accounts in narrative form and fully indexed.
++
Robert Stevens did write an excellent two volume book on Alaska Aviation. I know the Seattle Museum of Flight sells the set. I believe the price is about $175.00.

A new book, "The Flight Before Christmas" by Delta pilots Mark A. Werkema and James J. Koehn II, is mentioned in the December 6 issue of the Delta NewsDigest, Page 10......says it is available at Barnes & Noble. $13.95. I have contacted 2 B & N stores and their computer says that they cannot get it ......publisher is too small for them to handle it. I was unable to reach Page Free Publishing, and could not find the book online. Do you have an e-mail address for either of these gentlemen? I would like to purchase 3 copies before Christmas. I wish I had had the information about the book before my newsletter went out. It sounds like a great idea for a Christmas gift for a child. Hope you can help. Freddie Tappan
In the new children’s book “The Flight Before Christmas,” the story of Christmas Eve is told from a distinct and unique aviation perspective. Santa uses an old DC-4 to deliver gifts when his sleigh goes on the fritz. Co-authored by EAA member Mark Werkema, the book is based on the 1822 poem, “The Night Before Christmas” by Clement C. Moore. It’s available just in time for Christmas through the EAA Aeronautica’s online store at http://shop.eaa.org.

Dave, Darrel Whitcomb has written a couple of books about Vietnam. One being the the factual account of The Rescue of Bat 21. Hollywood made a hokey movie about the rescue. The actual rescue attempts were much worse than depicted in the movie.

Dave, I would be honored to be listed as a Delta author. I retired 1 Sept 03 and am now off doing other things. But I am doing some more writing. And I just returned from a flying job in Iraq. It is great to be home.
