Course summary

The aim of the course is to provide a comprehensive overview of firms' financial decision making. The course is designed to provide an applied and practical approach to finance, enabling the students to address topical issues that modern corporations face. In particular, the course builds on concepts such as valuation and capital structure theories, and applies those tools in a systematic and rigorous way to real-life financial management problems. After a brief introduction to financial markets, the course focuses on corporate finance and business valuation. Topics such as mergers and acquisitions and initial public offerings may also be covered.

Teaching format

Weekly three-hour “interactive” lectures for ten weeks. You are welcome to ask questions and actively participate in the discussions at any time during the lectures.

Housekeeping rules

  • Email policy: I will try to answer e-mails as timely as possible but allow me at least 2- 3 days to get back to you. As questions are best addressed at in-person meetings, I would strongly encourage you to come to my office hours for any questions you may have rather than contact me via e-mail. Furthermore, a list of FAQs will be regularly updated on Moodle, so please refer to this list first to see if the answer to your question is already there!

  • Start and end times: In accordance with LSE tradition, lectures will normally start at 5 minutes past the hour and finish at 5 minutes to the hour. Please try to arrive at the hour, so that we can start punctually.

  • Attendance & Recording: Our lectures will be recorded and posted on Moodle. It’s however good practice to attend the lectures, both because we encourage participation in lectures, and because the quality of the recording may vary. Please do not produce additional recordings and/or photos of our lectures.

  • Mobiles, computers, etc.: Please refrain from using mobile phones or other similar devices during the lectures. Laptop computers and tablets are allowed, but only if they are used for activities directly related to the lectures, such as an aid to visualise lecture slides, take notes, etc. You should not use devices for texting, reading or posting on social media, web searching (even if related to the content of the course), watching videos, playing games, etc. Research has found that such activities distract other students and affect their learning experience negatively.
