FRA AMERICANISM ESSAY CONTEST
“WHY I AM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN”
All students of Public, Private, Parochial or Home Schools in grades 7 through 12 are invited to enter the Fleet Reserve Association Annual Americanism Essay Contest.
Essays must be legibly written, printed or typed on one side of the paper and shall not exceed 350 words in length. Entries that do not meet these requirements will not be judged.
A typed or neatly printed entry form must be attached to each essay. Use the form on this page or a separate sheet of paper giving the same information. Mail to FRA Americanism Contest, 7673 Blanding Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32244-5111 before the deadline of December 1, 2014.
Essays will be judged by members of FRA Branches 126 and 91 in Jacksonville, Florida, for compliance with contest rules, best thought process, neatness, originality, sincerity, and adherence to the Essay Theme of: “WHY I AM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN.”
West Jacksonville Branch 126 and First Coast Fleet Branch 91 will present local area awards for the top 3 entries from each grade level. First Place Essays will be entered into the Southeast Regional competition with entries from FRA Branches in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee. First Place Regional Essays will be entered into the National competition. Regional awards will be announced at a later date.

NATIONAL AWARDS: The essay contest's Grand National prize is $5,000 with additional prizes of $2,500 for first place, $1,500 for second place, and $1,000 for third place in grades seven through twelve. Each winner will receive an attractive plaque citing his or her achievement. Every entrant judged at the national level receives a certificate of recognition.

Dear Educator: The Fleet Reserve Association (FRA) is an organization of 75,000 Active Duty, Retired and Veterans of the United States Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard. The purpose of this annual Essay Contest is to promote Americanism among our Nation’s young people.

Eyeglasses for Retirees: If you are retired military and eligible for other medical services, you are authorized to receive the following quantities of Standard Issue spectacles per year (MS9/S91A/Half Eyes/FS9):

If you choose not to request Bifocals/Trifocals, you can receive:
1 pair of Distance Vision and 1 pair of Near Vision spectacles
1 pair of Distance Vision tinted spectacles is authorized if prescribed by your Optometrist/Ophthalmologist
If you are less than 50 miles from a military health clinic with optometry services, you should take your prescription for spectacles to them so that they may measure you for proper fit. They will order your spectacles from the appropriate facility. (2nd Deck, NAS JAX Hospital 1300 – 1600 Wednesday & Friday)
If you are more that 50 miles from a military health clinic with optometry services, you may follow these instructions to order your glasses.
Open the form DD771 found at http://www.med.navy.mil/sites/nostra/order/Documents/DD771_2010.pdf , and save it to your computer. [this form is created to save the information you type into it]
Fill out the top section with your "name, "retiree", and "last 4", along with your shipping and contact information. About halfway down the form, indicate which standard issue frame you desire. Make sure to save the form with the information you added.
Print the partially completed form, and take this with you to your eye exam. Ensure that the examining facility writes the prescription, and includes your pupillary distance (PD) on the form.

If you currently have Standard Issue frames please provide the frame size and temple length. (found inside the frame)

This Convention is open to all members in good standing in the FRA and LAFRA. You will need to show your membership card to register as a Delegate and attend the Convention. The Branch 126 Editor and a few other Shipmates will be available if you need a ride to and from the Branch Hall and the Convention. Wear your Branch Shirt and cover, go for an hour or go for the day. Conventions are interesting!
