Grow Well’s Nardoni Junior Golf Camp : Great Golf, Great Fun
Grow Well’s junior golfers enjoyed great golf instruction, had fun and received lots of prizes at the third annual summer camp for youth at risk in the community of Gros Islet. Conducted during the last two weeks of July at Cap Estate, this year’s camp saw 18 youngsters vying for top prizes including trophies, and new golf club sets. Each child also received a flash drive, courtesy of US manufacturer PNY. Some received sneakers, compliments of a huge discount from New Balance USA. Four junior golf club sets were donated by Laurin Traub and Carol Tucker of Connecticut. Suzanne Feese of Atlanta, Georgia contributed trophies; and a Friend of Grow Well in Chicago donated 20 colorful shirts.
Claire Nardoni of the St. Lucia Golf and Country Club was the repeat sponsor of the summer junior camp, funding instruction, equipment, meals, gifts and prizes. Mrs. Nardoni recently returned to the island with her granddaughter Alyssa Newling specifically to help run the camp.
“The bond is great.” explains Colleen Newman, Grow Well Vice President and Director of the programme. “The Nardoni family enjoys working with our children. And our junior golfers are having an experience they will never forget… and are learning the discipline and self-esteem the game of golf entails. They are off the streets and learning a sport once considered elitist. In their colorful uniforms, they bring vibrant young lives to the Cap Estate course. Management at the Golf Course provides strong and ongoing support.”

Grow Well Junior Golf is a successful after-school activity for youth at risk in the Gros Iset district. This year Grow Well juniors have been trained by coaches Terry Verdant and Cliff Alcide. “In the most recent St. Lucia Open, Grow Well children, to the surprise of many, captured two top prizes for juniors, and they won the admiration of the St. Lucia golfing community. They made their parents, their schools and their community very proud of them,” added Paul Lorde, Grow Well’s president.

Grow Well Junior Golf is also supported by the St. Lucia Golf Association, Domino’s Pizza, Bagshaws and Lyndon St. Croix Tent Services, the golfing Flamingos, and by Friends of Grow Well in St. Lucia and abroad.
Trophy winners are: Linus Clovis—Champion; Rayshorn Joseph – 2nd ; Samuel Richelieu – 3rd; Jowen Smith --1st Girls; Lisa Daniel – 2nd Girls; Keymanie Thomas –1st place Under 12.
There was a special incentive prize this year for Best Conduct Overall. The IPad tablet donated by Mrs. Nardoni was won by Rayshorn Joseph and the close runner-up was Samuel Richelieu, who received an HP Tablet. “The theme of the summer camp was RESPECT. And with these treasures in mind, behavior at the camp has been exemplary. The camp has been a delightful learning experience for all,” said Mrs. Nardoni.
Thanks are due to the Monitors who came along regularly to assist with various aspects of the camp: Marisa, Joan, Kerwin, Canice, John Bruce and three of the SLJGA members, Jonathan, Cameron and Dominique.
