Rachel O’Brien (CAO) on behalf of Mohammed Mumit (Interfaith Association) asked what is being done about the new bill effectively turning landlords into immigration officers.
Guild has released a statement condemning the bill. We are working with international student’s office, Mentors, Community wardens. Preparing for October for 6-8 week visa basis students, working to resolve that. Looked into emergency rooms in halls as they aren’t affected by the bill. Fortunately we haven’t had any reports of this affecting current students yet. NUS are also supporting in this campaign.

Kitty Howse (Mech Eng) Question for Poppy Wilkinsion. Good to see the Not On campaign being launched. I haven’t seen what it consists of aside from signing the pledge. You mentioned in your speech that you wanted to run this campaign within Women’s Association events. You did not approach the Women’s Association to be involved and announced the launch at short notice so we were unable to attend. With the Women’s Association on board it would have been a stronger campaign.
Poppy Wilkinson (President) thanked people for their support so far in this campaign. The reason why it came about was following NUS research over the past years and personal experience. So as an Officer Team we spoke to the Uni about doing as joint campaign as they have a responsibility too. It moved quite quickly as the University wanted to act and were very supportive. When it was first started we didn’t have a Women’s Officer. However I did then speak to Nora Selmani (Women’s Officer). My understanding was that the info I gave to Nora was going back to Womens Association.
Kitty Howse (Mech Eng) responded that as only Nora Selmani was invited to these meetings they didn’t know about the detail and so were not involved.
Poppy Wilkinson said they did not want to exclude people. We wanted to use our Officer positions and resources to launch this. There was no malice behind this. Perhaps I could be invited to come to a Women’s Association meeting to talk about going forward.

Poppy Wilkinson responded that she apologies for the launch, saw it as a positive thing that I could work on as President of the Guild. Going forward we need to sit down together to have involvement from Women’s Association and their support. We only arranged a launch with the video. Apologies if I have acted inappropriately and if I over looked this area.

Lewis Addlington Lee (LGBTQ) update on mandate for Simon Furse and Kelly Rogers’ appeal and the events that happened in Warwick with regards to police on campus. Bethan Dovey (VPDRS) responded that she would like to speak to students about Warwick events.
Lewis Addlington-Lee (LGBTQ) expanded that the mandate was to write letters of condemnation to Warwick management and police. And to write a letter and ask for a meeting about Simon and Kelly.
Jack Mably (VPHC) said they must apologise that the team have been busy but will work on this.

Suggestion that this encompasses the wider part time officer team from Molly Browne (VPSN).

Whitney Nyarambi (Music and Dance) question for Wadim Wesolek (VPAD) as a President of a society I am not experiencing the improvement you have pledged to make for societies. Room bookings are not working well for societies. If you book multiple rooms and one room is not available/Amos is also being updated for acoustics and this won’t be appropriate for dance societies so takes one more room away from their booking.,
Wadim Wesolek (VPAD) there were some issues with staffing which made things difficult. We are now holding drop in sessions with the staff member for room bookings to help groups. Happy to address this issue after the meeting. We are currently setting up online room booking system, implement the full system in summer 2015. Reviewing a policy for room bookings for big events by the end of this term. We have updated some rooms with hard floors and mirrors for dance groups however we need to think about other societies as well. We will then discuss other rooms to look at flexibility.
Whitney also asked why they can’t use Costa as they put their shutters down and the flooring is wooden.
Wadim will check this as tables may not be able to move and it is also a work space so have to consider this.
Edward Sainsbury (Open Place) commend the prompt response regarding the graffiti. There was however a large portion of the student population concerned about the university’s response. Could you speak to the university about these concerns.
Poppy Wilkinson (President) confirmed she already had taken this to university. As soon as this came to my attention I contacted the university and they should have taken a stronger stance on this issue. They are currently working on more communications from management to students.
Hayley Graham (Women’s Association) commendation for the statement about the graffiti. What practical steps are being taken to protect students on campus who have been targetted or could be targeted following the graffiti.
Poppy Wilkinson (President) spoke to Warwick Union as they experienced a similar issue and they found out who had been doing this activity. We believe this may be the same case. University has taken out action against this group. Working on this here.

Molly Browne (VPSN) – I have been working on workshops awareness for sports teams. I fully support and will provide the link. We will also be doing work with sports development department for training for incoming sports committees. Last year we ran a liberation session. This year hoping to expand this.

Jack Mably (VPHC) responded we are working with BCU to get vote out and build a manifesto. Speak Week built out policies ‘housing’ ‘community’ and BCU’s was ‘employability’. Poppy Wilkinson (President) calls an emergency Guild Council for next Thursday so tha the proposed democratic structure can go to referendum. Guild Council passed motion to not run a referendum in term 3 so this is urgent. There will be further information released soon.
Hattie Craig (Open Place) asks can Guild Council vote on the emergency council meeting. The Chair reads the Bye Laws to confirm the President can call a meeting and Guild Council cannot vote on this.
