T
he Alphasmart is a small easy-to-use word processor which is well suited to the educational context because it:

is portable
-
is battery operated
-
has immediate start–up
-
has a full size keyboard
-
automatically saves files
-
is easy to transfer files for editing & printing from PC
-
provides alternative ways of recording and presenting
Getting started with the Alphasmart
-
Press On/Off key to switch on – this opens the last file used
-
Press File (1-8) Key to move from one file to another
-
Start to type – always good to put date or title at top of page
-
Press On/Off key when finished – no need to save
Transferring files to PC for printing:
-
Open a Word document on the PC
-
Attach small square end of cable into central port on top edge of Alphasmart and other end to a USB port on the PC
-
This automatically switches on the Alphasmart
-
Will see message ‘Attached to PC emulating keyboard…’
-
Press SEND key on the Alphasmart
-
The file will transfer to the Word Document
-
You can now edit or format text, use spell-check etc.
-
Print file in the usual way and save in My Documents if required
-
Undo the cable
Cowriter on the Alphasmart

Co:Writer can reduce number of key strokes used/aid spelling
-
Press TAB key to move in and out of Co:Writer mode( small stripes at RHS of screen indicate that you are in Co:Writer).

Enter initial letter of word to generate a list of suggestions
-
Press the number to select a word, or you can continue typing
-
A full stop will finish the sentence and send it to the document.
(A small arrow at RHS of screen indicates that Co:Writer is ready to begin your next sentence when you type in the initial letter of the next word.)
N.B A small star at RHS of screen indicates that only Word is active.
