The theme for the HIFF 2016 Photographic Competition is: A unique perspective on the seas of the Hebrides.
HIFF 2016 are seeking unusual photographs which capture the unique seas and coastal environments of the Outer Hebrides.
Entries must be taken within the Outer Hebrides and the Islands of Lewis, Harris, Uist and Barra and the peripheral areas like St Kilda.
Entrants can submit up to three photos as Digital images or prints. Entry photographs can be colour or black and white and can be either digital images or printed images.
Digital Images should be either JPEG or TIFF files and should be no smaller than 800KB and no larger than 5MB.
Images may be digitally enhanced to remove spots or scratches, but not manipulated. Entrants can enhance the picture to make it brighter, clearer etc, but not manipulate the content. HIFF organisers and the judges reserve the right to exclude any image they believe may have been excessively treated so as to alter authenticity.
The competition is open to everyone, visitors and tourists to the Islands may enter. Employees and Board members of Rural Nations (Scotland) CIC as well as their immediate families are not eligible to enter. Entrants under the age of 12 years need to have parent or guardian consent to enter.
Each entry should be accompanied by the HIFF 2016 Photographic competition Entry Form and a note of where each of the photos were taken and the photo title. Links to files should be e-mailed or sent by Dropbox to muriel@ruralnations.com
Postal Entries - Images submitted as prints (any size but no larger than A3) should be delivered with the entry form to HIFF2016 Photographic Competition Rural Nations (Scotland) CIC, 57 Westview Terrace, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, HS1 2LD The competition closes at: 12pm midnight onSaturday 17th September 2016.
Rural Nations (Scotland) CIC will confirm receipt of your entry by email.
Any postal entries will be returned after the judging but proof of posting is not proof of receipt. The organisers accept no responsibility for entries lost, damaged or delayed in the post.
Judging and Exhibition of entries:
All entries will be judged by a panel of 3 judges. (The judges will be independent professional photographers / artists) The judges will select a shortlist of a minimum of twelve photographs (the 'Finalists') which, in their opinion, best illustrate the theme of the competition. They will consider a range of factors including composition, technical ability, originality and interpretation of the brief.
The shortlisted photos will be exhibited by HIFF in An Lanntair Arts Centre in Stornoway during the autumn/winter 2016/2017 and on the HIFF website. For gallery exhibition the photographers are invited to prepare/print their own prints of their pictures to a quality they are happy with and HIFF will arrange for exhibition framing.
Of the 12 shortlisted photos winners - first, second and third place will be selected in each category. One winning photographer in each category will be presented with the prize money. The prize money for the adult competition is £100 cash and for the Children’s competition £50 in Argos vouchers.
Following the selection and exhibition of the HIFF 2016 finalists the printed pictures will be returned to the photographers.
Rights and Assignments:
All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party. The entrants must be the sole owner of copyright in all photographs entered and must have obtained permission of any people featured in the entries or their parents/guardians if children under 16 are featured. Also, entrants must not have breached any laws when taking their photographs.
Prior to submission, entrants must not have offered any of their entries for sale, been paid for any publication of any of their entries or won or been a runner up in any other photographic competition with any of their entries.
Entrants will retain copyright in the photographs that they submit to HIFF 2016. By entering the competition all entrants grant to the HIFF 2016 the right to exhibit their photographs in An Lanntair or another Island venue and on the HIFF website.
No fees will be payable for any of the above uses. Entrants whose photographs are one of the finalists also agree to take part in post-competition publicity. At any exhibition and online presentation of shortlisted photos the originating photographer will be credited.
By entering the competition, entrants will be deemed to have agreed to be bound by these rules and HIFF reserves the right to exclude any entry from the competition at any time and in its absolute discretion if HIFF organisers have reason to believe that an entrant has breached these rules.
HIFF reserves the right to cancel this competition or alter any of the rules at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, and if circumstances arise outside of its control.
If the winner is unable to be contacted after reasonable attempts have been made, HIFF reserves the right to either offer the prize to a runner up or to re-offer the prize in any future competition.
