Woodstock Facts and Statistics

It took six months to prepare for the festival.  $50,000 was reportedly paid to rent roughly 600 acres of Max Yasgur’s farm for the show.

Three day advance purchase tickets for Woodstock were $18.00.
The price at the gate was $24.00. At exactly 5:07 PM on Friday August 15,
Richie Havens began the festival with “Minstrel From Gault Q” There was an average wait of two hours to make a phone call and on the first day alone over 500,000 long distance calls made. 1,300 pounds of food brought in by helicopter. Over 500,000 hamburgers and hot dogs consumed on the first day of the festival. The cost of hot dogs $1, acid and mescaline $4. Wait time between acts ranged from 40 minutes to 2 hours. The stage was 80 feet wide. 18 doctors and 36 nurses treated a total of 6,000 patients. 33 people arrested on various drug offenses
Two births and Three deaths.
A total of 80 lawsuits were filed after the concert. 17 miles of bumper to bumper traffic on the main road leading to the site. Initial hopes for attendance numbers were 60,000…approximately 400,000 people attended the show…another 250,000 never made it to the site.
Only 30,000 – 80 000 people stayed to watch Jimi Hendrix’s closing set.

Cancelled Acts

  1. Jeff Beck Group (The band broke up in July, forcing cancellation)

  2. Iron Butterfly (Stuck at the airport, their manager demanded helicopters and special arrangements just for them. Were wired back and told, as impolitely as Western Union would allow, "to get lost", but in other 'words'.)

  3. Joni Mitchell (Joni's agent put her on "The Dick Cavett Show" instead)

  4. Lighthouse (Feared that it would be a "bad scene".)

  5. Ethan Brown (Arrested for LSD three days before the event.)

Declined Invitations

  1. The Beatles (John Lennon said he couldn't get them together)

  2. Led Zeppelin (Got a higher paying gig elsewhere)

  3. The Doors (Jim Morrison hated large outdoor venues)

  4. Bob Dylan (Turned it down because of his disgust of the hippies hanging around his house)

  5. The Byrds (Turned it down because of a melee during their performance at the first Atlanta International Pop Festival, held at the Atlanta International Raceway on July 4 and July 5, 1969)

  6. Tommy James & the Shondells (Turned it down because of being misinformed about the size and scope of the event)

  7. Jethro Tull (Turned it down because they thought it wouldn't be a big deal.)

  8. The Moody Blues (Unknown reasons)

  9. Mind Garage (Declined because they thought it wouldn't be a big deal and had a higher paying gig elsewhere)
