MORELAND CITY COUNCIL
Hi There!
After a chilly winter season I am happy to say ‘Welcome to Summer’!
My name is Leah Sumich, and I am the new Moreland Active Participation Officer – Access for all Abilities, with a vast background in promoting and engaging inclusive community sport and recreation opportunities.
I have a keen interest in getting out and about as much as I can, whether it be playing a game of netball, going for a paddle down the river, walking around our beautiful Merri Creek, or riding my bike down to the local park.
So whilst the sun is shining and the birds are chirping, why not make the most of it and partake in some of the great activities on offer this Summer!
For any further information on activities and programs phone Leah Sumich on 9240 2351 or email lsumich@moreland.vic.gov.au

The year started uncertain for us all at Coburg Tigers FIDA team. We only had eight players in April and we thought we may have to defer our introduction to the competition for another year. But with some hard work from the coach John Haller and Coordinator Raeleene Eldridge, we pulled together some more players to start with 14.
With the help of the Hume and Moreland City Councils and the support of the local media, we slowly started attracting more players.
We now have 27 registered players. This now gives us enough players for two teams in 2012.
The Coburg Tigers Football Club have been fantastic supporting us and making us feel apart of their football club.
Supreme Caravans paid for club jackets for all the players so they now look like real footballers! The Active Craigieburn project donated some funds to help make it more affordable for our new players in their first season.
Several other companies like Body Bronze -Moonee Ponds, Muscle Torque Fitness -St Albans and Rock Posters - Northcote all financially contributed to the success of our new club.
Half way during the season we started to see we were playing well enough as a group to maybe make the finals. Little did we know we would be so successful we would win the 3rd Division GRAND FINAL!!!
It was such a wonderful day, all players and supporters had the best time, and celebrations continued all day.
We won by such a large margin it shocked everyone as well as the team. With the help of our sponsors we had the most amazing Presentation Day with more than 100 people attending.
Every player received a participation trophy, a grand final t-shirt and the Coburg Tigers donated the playing jumpers to all the players so they could keep them as a memento of their Grand Final win.
So look out season 2012, we can’t wait to get started.
Carn the Tigers!!!!
Coburg Tigers FIDA Coordinator, Raelene Eldridge.

GYMNASTICS FOR BLIND AND VISION IMPAIRED KIDS
You are invited to participate in an exciting new pilot program offered by Essendon Keilor Gymnastics, with support from Blind Sports Victoria. This program will offer school age children 10 weeks of Gymnastics and Trampoline Classes absolutely FREE. These classes are suitable for absolute beginners, with no prior experience or exposure to Gymnastics. Classes will be offered on Fridays at 4.30pm and on Saturdays at 12.00pm starting 12 February 2012.
Some of the greatest benefits of gymnastics include coordination, power, strength, flexibility, balance, grace and most importantly injury preventing core stability and agility. Gymnastics teaches children perseverance, poise, confidence, attention to detail and concentration. So whether your child is a future Gymnast or goes on to be a Runner, Goalball player or Soccer star; a sound gymnastics education is essential for their development.
Coaches from Essendon Keilor Gymnastics Academy will deliver the program, assisted by our Senior Gymnasts and Junior Coaches. This will allow us to offer one on one assistance for the participants. Funding from the Victorian Youth Foundation has made this possible. Our Coaches have received training on “sighted guiding” to ensure they are ready to not only teach gymnastics, but to work with children who are Blind or Vision Impaired.
All Staff and volunteers have Working with Children’s Checks. Our Coaches are accredited through Gymnastics Australia and the Australian Sports Commission.

Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds
Developing active sport and recreation opportunities and pathways for people experiencing mental illness is the aim of the Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds project, developed with funding from the Department of Planning and Community Development’s Building Inclusive Sports grants.
Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds aims to promote inclusive and accessible recreation environments for people experiencing mental illness by building the capacity of local-government owned leisure facilities, developing the workforce and supporting inclusive policies and practices.
As the project moves into its second year, some of the positive outcomes recorded include partnership development between the mental health and recreation sectors, greater community awareness of local leisure opportunities and increased participation by people experiencing mental illness.
Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds will be developed in Hume at the Broadmeadows Leisure Centre, Craigieburn Leisure Centre and Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre by YMCA Victoria, in partnership with SANE Australia and Parks and Leisure Australia.

Residents can now get online and chat live with a Customer Service Officer with Council’s new live chat service on our website www.hume.vic.gov.au (live chat link under the search box). This will be particularly handy for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
What is Live Chat?
When residents click on the live chat icon, just below the search box (next to the RSS button), a chat box will appear which allows them to chat with our customer service staff.
The benefits of this service are that it is quick and easy to use and customers can obtain an immediate response without having to visit a Council office.
