Hyman Soloway Chair Summer Fellowships Provide Valuable Experience to Students With the pandemic affecting hundreds of students looking for employment and learning opportunities this summer, the Hyman Soloway Chair in Business and Trade Law organized and funded eight (8) summer fellowships for students looking to pursue opportunities in the field with the special permission of the donor. “This fellowship opportunity was a beacon of hope as my summer plans had been disrupted by the circumstances imposed by COVID-19” said Angel Li, who completed her fellowship with the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment in New York. Under the Common Law Section’s Summer Student Support Initiative (SSSI), Hyman Soloway Chair Professor Tony VanDuzer set up student summer fellowships with Gowlings WLG, Conlin Bedard, Professor Surya Deva at City University of Hong Kong, the International Institute on Sustainable Development, the Trade Law Bureau at Global Affairs (2 fellowships), and the Columbia Center for Sustainable Investment (2 fellowships). The purpose of these fellowships was to support students in obtaining valuable exposure to working in the fields of business law and international trade and investment law through practical legal experience. Though the positions were entirely remote, students advanced their legal research, memorandum writing and other skills through a variety of projects. Many learned invaluable transferrable skills and attended meetings and training sessions organized by government officials and others. The fellowships also helped to establish mentorship relationships with leading experts working in the field. “This has been an incredibly rewarding experience and I feel so honoured to have received this fellowship. During this fellowship, I was able to meet such incredible people and had the chance to work on many exciting projects” said Tiffany Lee, who completed her fellowship at the International Institute for Sustainable Development under the supervision of Howard Mann. Fellowship supervisors and their organizations also reported their satisfaction with the work of the Fellows. Brooke Guven, from the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment, commented that “the program overall was of extremely high value to us…. As such, the funding that you made available, and the high quality of Agata and Angel’s work, enabled us to advance [our] … projects over the past weeks”. Dans le cadre de l’initiative de soutien aux étudiants pour l’été (ISÉÉ) de la Section de Common Law, le président de la Chaire Hyman Soloway, le professeur Tony VanDuzer, a mis en place des bourses d’été avec Gowlings WLG, Conlin Bedard, Professeur Surya Deva de la City University de Hong Kong, l’Institut International du Développement Durable, le Bureau du droit Commercial aux Affaires mondiales (2 bourses) et le Centre Columbia sur l’Investissement Durable (2 bourses). Ces bourses ont pour but d’aider les étudiants à acquérir une expérience de travail précieuse dans les domaines du droit des affaires et du droit du commercial international et de l’investissement, grâce à des travaux pratique. Malgré que les placements soient entièrement du travail à distance, les étudiants ont avancé leurs recherches juridiques, la rédaction d’exposé de droit et d’autres compétences grâce a une variété de projets. Les étudiants ont acquis des compétences transférables inestimables et ont assisté à des réunions et des sessions de formation organisées par des représentants du gouvernement et d’autres. Les bourses ont également aidé à établir des relations de mentorat avec des experts travaillant dans le domaine. « Cela a été une expérience incroyablement enrichissante et je me sens très honorée d’avoir reçu cette bourse. Au cours de cette bourse, j’ai pu rencontrer des personnes incroyables et j’ai eu la chance de travailler sur de nombreux projets passionnants » à déclarer Tiffany Lee, qui a complété sa bourse a l’Institut International du Développement Durable sous la supervision de Howard Mann. Les superviseurs des bourses et leurs organisations ont également exprimé leur satisfaction à l’égard du travail des boursiers. Brooke Guven, du Centre Columbia sur l’Investissement Durable, a déclaré que « le programme était d’une très grande valeur pour nous… [L]e financement que vous avez mis à disposition et la grande qualité du travail d’Agata et d’Angel nous ont permis de faire avancer [nos]…projets au cours des dernières semaines. » Download 18.43 Kb.
