I have a Dream” Essay Contest

As the Atlanta Dream celebrates its 10th anniversary season, we are excited to host an essay contest inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy and his impact in society. In 1963, King delivered one of the most inspiring speeches at the March on Washington as he fought for equal rights and justice. The Atlanta Dream’s name actually comes from this famous speech titled “I have a dream,” symbolic of hope, unity and the power of the city Atlanta. Hundreds of students around the metro-Atlanta area will have the opportunity to participate in this essay competition to honor King’s legacy.

Essay Contest Details:

  • Every essay should start with “I have a dream….” From that point, it is up to the student to express his or her dream in 300-500 words. In one paragraph, the student should describe the impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. or what his legacy means.

  • The essay submission should be submitted as an attachment and sent to Hannah Gebresilassie at hannah.gebresilassie@atlantadream.net no later than January 27, 2017. All documents should include the student’s first and last name, school, grade, teacher and guardian contact info.

  • A panel of judges including the president of the Atlanta Dream, Theresa Wenzel, will review the essays and select the winners. Winners will be notified in February.
