Installing Windows 7 on a Mac____________________________
Users of Leopard & Snow Leopard (10.5 and 10.6) should have the Mac OS X disk for their computer before proceeding.
While in the Mac partition:

  1. Open the Boot Camp Assistant.

This tool may be found in: Macintosh HD  Applications  Utilities  "Boot Camp Assistant"

  1. The assistant will open and explain the purpose of the application. You may press the "Continue" button in the bottom right-hand corner.

  2. If you are prompted to download windows support software to your computer, choose: “I have already downloaded the Windows support software…”

  3. You will be directed to the "Create a Partition for Windows" page. This section will determine the size of the Windows partition and the space remaining on your Mac partition. Although this process may be reverted back to a single partition at a later point, you will be unable to resize the partition. Choose a size for your Windows partition by clicking the "·" between the Mac and Windows partitions. If unsure about how much space to allow for your windows partition, it is recommended that you allocate 80GB of space. Macbook Air users may want to consider a lower number, since the average hard drive size is much smaller. If you are unsure, contact the UITS Support Center for help.

  4. Once you have the drive size divided to meet your needs, choose "Partition". This process will sometimes take several minutes to isolate a section of the drive for Windows.

  5. After the computer has partitioned the disk, you will need to insert your Windows disk into the computer and choose "Start Installation" (You will need to wait ~15 seconds after placing the Windows disk in the drive before pressing "Start Installation")

Windows 7 may be purchased from the IU Bookstores for $20.00 plus tax.

Start Installation” will restart the computer automatically. When the computer restarts, there may be a screen that prompts “press any key to boot from a CD”; press a key if it appears. You should then see a prompt “Windows is loading files”.

  1. Once Windows has finished loading files, you will see a blue or green Windows installer screen:

    1. Choose your language.

    2. Select your time zone (IUN campus is on Central Time. All other IU campuses are on Eastern Time).

    3. Press “Install Now”.

    4. Read through the license agreement and if you agree check the box and press “Next”.

    5. Choose the “Custom (Advanced)” installation option.

    6. You will now see a screen with several partitions, you will need to select the partition listed as “BOOTCAMP” (It should be similar in size to the partition size you chose while in the Boot Camp assistant.

    7. CAUTION: DO NOT FORMAT ALL OF THE PARTITIONS IN THIS MENU, only the partition for Windows. Click “Drive options (Advanced)” and then with the “BOOTCAMP” partition selected choose “Format”. This will then prompt you to erase everything on the partition; however, the Mac should have already removed all the files from this space and prepared it for Windows. Select “Yes”.

    8. When you click “Next” with “BOOTCAMP” selected after formatting, the Windows installation will begin. At this point the process will be automatic for ~20-45 minutes. During this time, you will want to ensure that the computer is plugged into a power source while you wait.

    9. After the installation completes, you will be prompted to enter information such as a name for your computer, an account name, password, etc. The computer may restart several times in this process. When your computer has booted to the point where you may click the start button in Windows the installation is complete.

Note: When prompted for the product key, leave it blank. After installation is complete, you must run the Windows 7 Activation Assistant within 30 days to validate your product key.

    1. Eject the disk (Go to [Start]  Computer  Highlight the DVD Drive  Click “Eject” in the top menu bar).

NOTE: If at any time after the installation you wish to alternate between the Windows and Mac Partitions, you may restart the computer and hold [Option] when it starts up.

  1. Once Windows is installed, you will need to install the Windows support software and drivers. The drivers allow for the use of the network card, camera, Apple Remote, track pad and function keys.

If using Boot Camp 4.0

(Most computers running 10.7 – Lion)

  1. Restart the computer and hold down “option” to enter the Mac partition.

  2. Start the Boot Camp application (Macintosh HD  Applications  Utilities  "Boot Camp Assistant")

  3. Choose “Download the Windows support software for this Mac”.

  4. If prompted with the option, select: “Save a copy to an external drive”.

  5. Insert a blank USB storage device and save the Windows support software to the storage device.

  6. Restart the computer and hold down “option” to start the Windows partition.

  7. Go to the circle [Start] button  Computer  Open the USB drive and run the “setup.exe” file from the WindowsSupport folder.

  8. Follow the automatic setup process for installing the Mac drivers (The computer will need to restart after this process completes).

If using Boot Camp 2.0 or 3.0

(Most computers running 10.5 and 10.6 – Leopard and Snow Leopard)
If you have the Mac OS X Disk for your computer:

  1. While in the Windows portion of the computer, insert the Mac OS X disk. A prompt should appear asking if you would like to auto-run the file “Setup.exe”. If this prompt does not appear (Go to the circle [Start] button  Computer  Double-click on the DVD drive). Follow the automatic setup process for installing the Mac drivers (The computer will need to restart after this process completes).

If you are missing the Mac OS X Disk for your computer:

  1. 10.5 (Leopard) users will be unable to install the support software and drivers. You will need to locate a compatible Mac OS X 10.5 disk then follow the steps above.

  1. 10.6 (Snow Leopard) users will first need to completely update their Mac operating system.

Once the Mac OS is up to date, you will need a blank CD or DVD, or a USB drive that has been formatted as FAT. While in the Mac portion of the computer, open the Boot Camp assistant. This tool may be found in: Macintosh HD  Applications  Utilities  "Boot Camp Assistant”. Select “Download the Windows support software for this Mac” and if prompted, enter your computer’s administrator password. After the file is downloaded choose to save the file either to your blank disk or USB drive.
If the blank disk or USB drive does not auto-run while inside Windows, Locate and run the “setup.exe” file within the WindowsSupport folder.

  1. Once the drivers are installed, you may then connect to the network and use the Windows partition as you wish. Instructions for connecting to the IU Secure wireless network may be located here:
