Atlanta’s Heroes
Robert Woodruff, Hank Aaron, Andrew Young, Billy Payne, Deborah Norville, Phil Niekro and the illustrious Ted Turner are all Atlantans of whom we are proud. Today, we will be focusing on three important heroes who have helped shape not only Atlanta…but the world!…President Jimmy Carter, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ms. Margaret Mitchell.
We will travel down Auburn Avenue, and proceed to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Historic District where Dr. King was born, grew up, preached and was buried. We will stop at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Social Change where his grave site is located. From there, you can walk past the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King, Jr., served as co-pastor from 1960 until 1968. The tour continues to the Birth Home of Martin Luther King, Jr., a nine-room, two-story Queen Anne style residence that has been restored to its original appearance. This area, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Atlanta, is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
We will visit the Carter Presidential Center, home of the Carter Presidential Library. Here 70,000 square feet of manuscripts, photographs and folk art can be seen. The most popular display is a simulated town meeting hall in which visitors can touch a computer monitor to choose one of more than 100 questions to be posed to Mr. Carter. His life size image, standing behind a podium, appears on a screen to answer questions, ranging from why he chose to go to Camp David with Sadat and Begin, to the Iranian Hostage crisis, to daily life in the White House.
We will visit The Margaret Mitchell House. It was built as a single-family home in 1899 on fashionable Peachtree Street…in a neighborhood known as the “tight squeeze.” In 1919, the house was converted into a 10-unit apartment building and it is here, from 1925 until 1932, that Margaret Mitchell lived and wrote the most popular novel of all time. Margaret’s affectionate nickname for her apartment was “the Dump.” It was also during this time - the roaring 20’s and 30’s - that Mitchell’s apartment became an enclave for bohemian Atlanta and a central meeting place for aspiring writers and journalists. A former journalist herself, Mitchell crafted the story of Gone With the Wind amidst this rich period of Atlanta history.

African American Heritage
Our tour will acquaint you with Atlanta’s American heritage. It begins with a drive through downtown Atlanta, where the city’s history is reflected in the architecture and busy life of our city. We will drive by landmarks of Atlanta’s growth from its beginnings as a railroad town in the 1830’s to the international city it is today.
We will travel to Auburn Avenue, the heart of Atlanta’s historic African American heritage, where many of its great success stories had their beginning. We will visit the APEX Museum, opened in 1988 as a permanent salute to Auburn Avenue’s history, a museum of African American experience, history, and culture.
Continuing down Auburn Avenue, we will proceed to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Historic District where Dr. King was born, grew up, preached and was buried. This area, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Atlanta, is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We will stop at the National Park Service Visitor’s Center for an orientation to the historic district and to view the exhibits there. There will also be time to visit Dr. King’s grave site and the King Center, where a replica of his Nobel Peace Prize is on view. From there, you can walk to Ebenezer Baptist Church and the King birth home.
Now we will continue across town to visit the Herndon Home, the 1910 residence of the family of Alonzo Herndon, slave born Georgian and founder of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company. The 15 room home, designed by Herndon and his wife, was built by black craftsmen. The home is located within the Atlanta University Complex which is made up of 5 black colleges.
