INVITATION TO COMPETE, 62nd SPEARFISHING OPEN
CHAMPIONSHIPS,2014.
Hosted by Freedive Extreme, at Kangaroo Island, South Australia.

The Australian Underwater Federation and Freedive Extreme would like to invite all interested spearfishers to attend the 62nd National Spearfishing Championships, to be held in South Australia.
The Competition will be held on the picturesque North Coast of Kangaroo Island, with a base location of Emu Bay.
The Competition will begin with a registration evening on Sunday 12th of January and will conclude with the presentation night on Saturday 18th January.
Kangaroo Island is quite simply a diver’s paradise with many of SA’s premier species including Harlequin Fish, Red Snapper, and King George Whiting, within reach of a shore dive as well as a very healthy population of Southern Rock Lobster.
Kangaroo Island is one of South Australia’s premier tourist locations with attractions including basking sea lion colony’s, caves, honey farms, amazing natural rock formations, numerous lighthouses, wildlife parks, and MORE so why not bring the family along too for a memorable experience!

Championships
General Information
-Locations
Selected locations for Open Heats & Interpacific swim offs are Emu Bay, Stokes Bay, Cape Cassini, Western River cove & Snellings beach.
Fin swim & Film fishing locations (yet to be disclosed)
All locations are effected by similar prevailing conditions and as such unless for special or unforeseen circumstances locations will be randomly drawn the day before heat commences.
-Registration/sign on
Registration will take place on the 12/1/14 at the Ozone Hotel in Kingscote (Cnr Commercial St & Chapman Terrace) between 4pm-7pm. Schedule of proceeding events & Random draw of location of first heat (weather permitting) will be advised.
Please note that all nominated teams & pairs or any other applicable category’s MUST be registered at the sign on. This does not include Interpacific pairs which are dependent on final results.
An overview of the week ahead will be provided and there will be opportunities for competitors to ask any questions or raise any concerns.
-Cost
Competition fee $350 per competitor. Includes T-shirt, BBQ, and soft drink on all Open individual spearfishing days and includes presentation dinner.
Junior and Sub-Junior competitors 50% discount $175.
A further $25 discount is offered to all competitors who register and pay by 30th November 2013.
-Schedule of events
Please note this is a guide only, the events may possibly have to be shuffled around due to weather or other circumstances.
Mon 13/01/14 Day 1- Open individual Spearfishing + State nominated pairs.
Tues 14/01/14 Day 2- Open individual Spearfishing + State nominated 4 person teams
Wed 15/01/14 Day 3- Open individual Spearfishing or possible rest day.
Thurs 16/01/14 Day 4- Open individual Spearfishing if rest day taken day 3, or rest day if not.
Fri 17/01/14 Day 5- Interpacific pairs swim off, only open to those who commit to attend if successful in swim off (Interpacific in Tahiti, probably April, May or June 2014). Limited funding available for competitors to Tahiti & requires about 8 days overseas.
Sat 18/01/14 Day 6- Film fishing & Fin swim events (locations yet to be disclosed). Presentation Night- at the Ozone Hotel in Kingscote 6pm- late (Neat dress attire required)
-Presentation Night
Presentation night will take place at the Ozone Hotel in Kingscote from 6pm-late in the private function room (Neat Dress attire is required). A two coarse meal will be provided & drinks will also be available but not included with dinner.
Trophies and prizes will be awarded after dinner. Wining international competitors will be acknowledged but perpetual trophies must not leave Australia. Local Taxi service and mini busses will be available and contact information will be provided at presentation night.
Extra family members are able to be catered for at the presentation night at own cost. However please state how many extras you will be bringing when registering for the competition. There is a space allocated for this on the competition registration form.

62nd Australian Spearfishing Titles B Section Rules
General Competition
All competitors must be REGISTERED by 6 pm on Sunday 12th of January 2014.
Current AUF membership is mandatory for this competition however the organizers will accept financial NSW members from the USFA, provided current membership can be verified. Pre advised overseas competitors are eligible to enter and be recognised (all trophy’s will remain in Australia) All competitors must show respective association members card.
Nominations for Pair and Teams must be submitted by 4.00 pm on the afternoon preceding those events.
World individual & Interpacific pairs selections will be considered from this event and rules applying to selection will be provided prior to the championships commencing.
There will be a dive briefing for each heat the night prior at 1800 for captains. There will be a short competitor briefing prior on the day at 0745 am.
Captains will be required to read the risk management plan, which will be provided, on sign on day
Grand Masters 64 years & older will be included in this event.
The organizers accept no responsibility for any claims for loss or injury that may arise at this event & expect that all competitors understand & accept the coverage of insurance they may or may not have through their membership of the AUF or the USFA as being adequate to their personal needs. Competitors should consider their own personal insurance cover additionally.
Every competitor must bring a plastic fish/dive bin to store their fish in water prior to weigh in. This will enable fair treatment of all competitors fish and maintain eating quality.
It is the obligation of the diver to bag, seal and tag his / hers catch at the competition venue. (BAGS, SEALS & TAGS will be provided by the organisers).
No responsibility will be taken by the organisers for incorrectly sealed or tagged catches.
All catches MUST BE TRANSPORTED to the weigh-in area by the divers.
The competitor’s catch will only be weighed when the competitor, his nominee or the team manager is in attendance.
Only the competitor or his nominee and the team manager will be allowed in the weigh-in area to watch the weighing of the competitor’s fish.
Competitors must place their fish in the sign off area prior to official completion time. The competitor must then immediately ensure he or she is signed off. If all of the competitor’s fish are not in the sign off area in time the competitor will be considered late back.
A 15 minute period will be allowed after the official competition finish time for competitors to sort and test weigh their fish. IE: if the day’s competition finishes at 2pm, competitors MUST have their fish in the sign off area by this time. However competitors will then have until 2:15 pm before their fish must be bagged and in the controlled ring.
Decisions on identification of fish species by the weigh-in officials will be final.
The principal reference text for identification of species shall be; Sea Fishes of Southern Australia by Barry Hutchins & Roger Swainston.
Any ineligible fish species (see scoresheet) presented at the weigh in will result in that competitor being disqualified from that day’s heat. Only listed fish are permitted to be used for burley. Size limits must be adhered to at all times. No competitor is to present more than 2 of one species at the weigh in.
The following species are protected In South Australian waters and their capture is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN:
Divers must bring all their fish to the sign off point. Gear is permitted to be left on the beach to be picked up at the diver’s leisure, provided that the diver is present to witness the weigh in of their catch.
Only one unlisted specie & one fish from each category ‘’other” may be weighed in.
Eligible species, which are dependent upon fisheries legislation, will be accepted by minimum lengths first, followed by weight. This will be at the interpretation of the weigh master.
Any competitor breaking any South Australian Fisheries regulations size or bag limits during the event will be disqualified from the competition.
All fish presented for weigh-in shall remain the property of the host.
A collection bin will be provided at the sign-off point for depositing of unwanted fish.
Tails are to be chopped off of any fish competitors wish to take home.
Dumping of fish at the dive venues will carry a “PENALTY”.
DISQUALIFICATION FROM THE HEAT.
Breaches to ‘A’ Section Rules will be dealt with under those rules & may lead to disqualification.

Each day’s competition location will be randomly drawn from a hat on the day prior to that event.
No competitor shall spear any fish in any of the nominated locations 14days prior to the 12th of January 2014.

The depositing of equipment at various sites in the Competition Venues prior to the start of competition for use during the competition will not be allowed. eg: Backpacks, shoes, spare clothing, dive gear, water bottles etc. (Refer A Section Rules)

Starting points &Sign off points TBA prior to heats.
Gear
All mandatory safety gear as per “A section” Rules must be strictly adhered to and will be checked each day of the event.
Plaques/Float boats & Body board floats are permitted for use during competition.
Due to the potential shark hazard that diving Kangaroo Island provides, these methods of floats are STRONGLY RECCOMENDED by the organisers.
There is no maximum size limits for floats, but they must not be used to aid in transportation of a diver at any point of the competition. Competitors caught doing so will be subject to DISQUALIFICATION FROM THE HEAT.
The use of torches during the event is permitted. As South Australian fisheries regulations permit the use of torches whilst engaged in spearfishing activities.
PERSONAL GPS ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED!
The use of Shark Shields is permitted and recommended to be used by all competitors.
