It is more important for a building to serve its purpose than to be a work of art.In
architecture, the debate between putting the functionality of a building above its artistic value has long been ongoing. While some argue that the main focus of the building should be on serving its purpose, others argue that the artistic skill of the structure is of the same importance. However, when considering the practical results of this argument, it is revealed that the functionality of the building should surpass its status as a work of art.
First of all, the main purpose of any building is to fulfill the needs and requirements of its inhabitants. Whether it is a residential, commercial
institution or public facility, the main purpose of the building is to provide a safe, comfortable, and efficient environment for those who use it. Therefore, the
functionality of the building, which includes factors such as order, comfort, safety features, and practicality, must be carefully considered and prioritized during the design and construction phases.
In
addition, a building that cannot effectively serve its purpose, regardless of its artistic appeal, is ultimately considered a failure. For example, the lack of proper lighting will not visually foster the productivity of
an excellent office building, ventilation, or work area and can even compromise the well-being of its passengers. On the other hand, a more utilitarian structure that effectively meets the needs of its users, even if it does
not have artistic decorations, will be much more successful in fulfilling its main purpose.
In addition, emphasizing functionality in relation to artistry can lead to more stable and cost-effective design solutions. Focusing on the practical requirements of the building, architects can optimize energy efficiency, reduce emissions and minimize environmental impacts. This approach not only benefits
the users of the building, but also contributes to the goal of creating a more stable and durable built environment.
In my view, although the artistic value of the building is undoubtedly important, it should not overshadow its main purpose. The building, which provides a safe, efficient and
comfortable space for users, which effectively performs its function, is of greater importance than the one that puts aesthetics above practicality. Emphasizing functionality in architectural design, we can create buildings that not only inspire and attract, but also satisfy the needs of their inhabitants. (372 words)
