Flying Fortresses with limited damage. Finally, during the Cold War, four tunnels were secretly refurbished under the aegis of NATO to be transformed into a nuclear shelter for the President of the Republic and the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in the event of a nuclear conflict.

Today, thanks to the
Free Santorestese Cultural Association Bunker Soratte (tel. 380 3838102), it is possible to visit the galleries and a collection of military memorabilia and vehicles, walking through a sort of widespread museum that tells how history passed in the depths of this mountain.
The Monte Soratte tunnels are located in Sant'Oreste and can be reached from the Ponzano-Soratte motorway exit of the A motorway. Guided tours, lasting about an hour and a half, are by reservation only on public opening days and in the two shifts of 10.30 and 15.30. The nearest parking areas for campers are those of Civita Castellana (16 km),
Mazzano Romano (17 km, Montopoli in Sabina (26 km) and Farfa (35 km).
